Evolution is change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations. These characteristics are the expressions of genes that are passed on from parent to offspring during reproduction. Different characteristics tend to exist within any given population as a result of mutation, genetic recombination and other sources of genetic variation. Evolution occurs when evolutionary processes such as natural selection (including sexual selection) and genetic drift act on this variation, resulting in certain characteristics becoming more common or rare within a population. It is this process of evolution that has given rise to biodiversity at every level of biological organisation, including the levels of species, individual organisms and molecules. The scientific theory of evolution by natural selection was conceived independently by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-19th century and was set out in detail in Darwin's book On the Origin of Species. Evolution by natural selection was first demonstrated by the observation that more offspring are often produced than can possibly survive. This is followed by three observable facts about living organisms: (1) traits vary among individuals with respect to their morphology, physiology and behaviour (phenotypic variation), (2) different traits confer different rates of survival and reproduction (differential fitness) and (3) traits can be passed from generation to generation (heritability of fitness). Thus, in successive generations members of a population are more likely to be replaced by the progenies of parents with favourable characteristics that have enabled them to survive and reproduce in their respective environments. In the early 20th century, other competing ideas of evolution such as mutationism and orthogenesis were refuted as the modern synthesis reconciled Darwinian evolution with classical genetics, which established adaptive evolution as being caused by natural selection acting on Mendelian genetic variation. All life on Earth shares a last universal common ancestor (LUCA) that lived approximately 3.5–3.8 billion years ago. The fossil record includes a progression from early biogenic graphite, to microbial mat fossils, to fossilised multicellular organisms. Existing patterns of biodiversity have been shaped by repeated formations of new species (speciation), changes within species (anagenesis) and loss of species (extinction) throughout the evolutionary history of life on Earth. Morphological and biochemical traits are more similar among species that share a more recent common ancestor, and can be used to reconstruct phylogenetic trees.Evolutionary biologists have continued to study various aspects of evolution by forming and testing hypotheses as well as constructing theories based on evidence from the field or laboratory and on data generated by the methods of mathematical and theoretical biology. Their discoveries have influenced not just the development of biology but numerous other scientific and industrial fields, including agriculture, medicine and computer science.
Ok here goes, I was thinking about how to improve artificial intelligence capabilities, and I was in biology and for some reason we were taking about neuron and cell capabilities to replicate DNA in mitosis. And then it hit me, if you could create a small self-contained application that would...
Hello
I'm in the process of writing some code to enable me to solve for the stellar structure and evolution of a star. Langauge is C++, unfortunately my coding isn't exactly up to scratch and i was wondering if anybody has any useful hints or tips. I'll attach a copy of my source code.
I...
Here they go again.

Maybe we should change "superintendent" to "political administrator who proposes silly things"
I've been thinking about the development of life on this planet as seen by the scientific community vs. biblical creationist accounts, specifically Intelligent Design or Creator theories.
Upon reading the book Chaos, by James Gleick, and other books, it has become apparent to me that chaotic...
Will evolution, which selects traits promoting survival, ever directly allieviate the fear and suffering of death? Perhaps that latter process shall remain more in the domain of society and faith.
This is a current topic of interest, can evolution produce organisms that are more prone to evolve? Doesn't this require group selection?
Here is an http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/95/15/8420 (courtesy of the Gene expression blog) which discusses evolvability at the molecular biology...

The density operador which describes an ensemble,
\rho = \sum_{i} w_i |a_i> <a_i| (represented in the basis in which it is diagonal), evolves in time such that |a_i(t)> = U(t) |a_i> when the enemble remains undisturbed, i.e. the w_i do not change.
But for irreversible processes the w_i...
Before Darwin's theory, the common view was (AFAIK) Lamarkian evolution. This theory required (again, AFAIK) that changes in the individual being were passed on to its offspring, and thus the great variety of species that exist today. Now this was proven wrong, by the Darwinians. However, what I...
What can fossil and other historical records tell us about ancient species' behavioral evolution, like we interpret from preserved physiology the progression of phenomes with genomes?
It's commonly stated that all dogs are descended of wolves, and that it took anywhere from 20-50,000 years for a wolf to evolve into a dang-zu, yet it took hundreds of thousands of years for homo erectus to evolve into homo sapien...
Someone explain this...
Religion disproving Evolution and proving Creation through Science?
Why must Religous leaders attempt to disprove evolution and prove creationism through science?
A Biology instructor, I once had, made the comment: "This is science class, in science class we play science and in church we...
The trouble with epistemology is that it is tightly bound to metaphysics, and vice versa of course. Your epistemology is determined by your metaphysics, and your metaphysics is determined by your epistemology. The result of this indeterdependency is an evolutionary dynamic.
Any particular...
Tell me if you think this is a possibility:
It came to me in Church today. Could religion be instilled in us through evolution as a way of allowing us to have intelligence and consciousness and not kill ourselves in large amounts?
If everybody realized that there was no point to life aside...
I didn't know really where to put this, but here goes.
I am a high school student who before reading about intelligent design proudly belived in darwisnism. After reading books such as "Darwinism Under the Microscope" and "Darwins Blackbox" I fully lost belief in darwinwism and actually...
I've got myself into a debate about whether Evolution is currently occurring in Humans.
So far, with my initial thoughts on the subject, no matter how I approach the topic, I can only formulate Affirmative arguments. Can anyone think of any sort of case that can be built against the stance that...
I have observed that many people have question about evolution. When I look back at high school we got to learn the classical model (see diagram below) of evolution and this model was also though in the university level zoology and plant biology whereas in microbiology we got to learn the Woese...
Obviously we cannot deny that gradual evolution occurs. This is obvious, and readily demonstrable. However, there are some apparent "gaps" in the fossil record (which creationists are quick to jump on as evidence of God's having created the different "kinds" individually) that lead one to think...
Well, everyone asked for it! I read atleast 5 or 6 posts that had some reference to the want of this topic. I've studied Evolution and Creationism for almost 2 years now. So I'm up to any challenges concerning the matter.
I don't know the appropriate way to start off, so I'll leave it up...
It occurred to me that the existence of localized time reversal would manifest an evolution that relies more on free will than genetic determination. The connectivity between two events completing a time loop takes place arbitrarily to Darwinism, either fulfilling spacetime continuity or...

Abviously our feet have evolved to be different after
we got down from the trees. Further more, the fingers on
our feet are now small and of rather little use by comparisson.
Have there been any reseacrh works or maybe those adaptation

Hmm... I have a new hypothesis on how knowledge (or at least, scientific knowledge) works. Knowledge, imho is does not proceed from divine inspiration, or random spurts, or gradual building up, but in a combination of these processes via a system akin to evolution.
1. Mutation. This comes...
I'm not positive that this is the appropriate Forum to post this thread in, but I trust that it will be moved if it needs to be.
I've been thinking about the cornerstones of the different fields of Science. By "cornerstone", I mean a theory that is at the very heart of practically ever...
First off, I do believe in evolution.
But I was thinking, Evolution is based on natural selection, the survival of the fittest. Insects are extremely strong, fierce, and capable for their sizes. Why would it just happen that insects are so small? It almost seems as if this situation was...

Behaviourism = the philosophy that a mental state is a disposition to behave a certain way.
I am not a fan of behaviourism directly, but I have just come to realize that Behaviourism is the most accurate philosophy of the mind in terms of evolution. I mean, when u consider that evolution can...
How did single celled orgainsims evolve into multicelular organisms because I just can't imagine them making that step. Evolution is due to mutations in organisms that makes them better at survival but how could such a large mutation have occured?
Also, does anyone know what they evolved into?
I just read a piece of a book that refers to the affect that HERV (human endogenous retroviruses) can have on the mutation of species - throughout the different generations. I was wondering if there was a site or book or some other such reference that I could look up, that has to do with...
Fossil records reveal that dinosaurs thrived on this planet for millions of years, millions of years ago. If they existed for so long why didn't they evolve into much more intelligent creatures? Aren't a few million years long enough to make that evolutionary leap to, say, developing a...
Evolution not proven? here is its logical proof:
1. The current theory of evolution states that any system where there is hereditary information, slight alterations of that information, and a selection pressure for the best system of hereditary information, evolution will occur.
2. DNA is...
