A game is a structured form of play, usually undertaken for entertainment or fun, and sometimes used as an educational tool. Games are distinct from work, which is usually carried out for remuneration, and from art, which is more often an expression of aesthetic or ideological elements. However, the distinction is not clear-cut, and many games are also considered to be work (such as professional players of spectator sports or games) or art (such as jigsaw puzzles or games involving an artistic layout such as Mahjong, solitaire, or some video games).
Games are sometimes played purely for enjoyment, sometimes for achievement or reward as well. They can be played alone, in teams, or online; by amateurs or by professionals. The players may have an audience of non-players, such as when people are entertained by watching a chess championship. On the other hand, players in a game may constitute their own audience as they take their turn to play. Often, part of the entertainment for children playing a game is deciding who is part of their audience and who is a player.
Key components of games are goals, rules, challenge, and interaction. Games generally involve mental or physical stimulation, and often both. Many games help develop practical skills, serve as a form of exercise, or otherwise perform an educational, simulational, or psychological role.
Attested as early as 2600 BC, games are a universal part of human experience and present in all cultures. The Royal Game of Ur, Senet, and Mancala are some of the oldest known games.

Hi,
I'm making a car simulation game not just a simple one, one that closely matches the kinds of Gran Turismo, therefore, it has to be extremely precise and realistic and use real life physics.
I have been searching around for information regarding this subject and was able to get some...
Hi guys.
A question came to me as I'm playing a card game with 4 players. Let's say the full deck (of 52 playing cards) are all dealt to each player, one at a time into player's hands in a direction. All the cards are fully dealt before a player views the cards in his hands.
Assume player...
When a single person shouts at a football game, the sound intensity level at the center of the field is 63.3dB. When all the people shout together, the intensity level increases to 115dB. Assuming that each person generates the same sound intensity at the center of the field, how many people are...
Around 3 years back, I had a stall setup at my school's fun fair. It was a simple gambling setup. You put your money on either of 3 things: i] Above 7, ii] Lucky 7 or iii] Below 7.
And then, you roll the dice [2 of 'em]. If you put on either below 7 or above 7 and the dice sums up to below 7...

I am confused about this. Can someone give me an example of a game with perfect information in which neither player has a winning strategy?
What is it that puts one persons thoughts above another's? please do not quote some thoughts from people that have not been tested beyond reasonable doubt.

So, for the last few years I've been doing this "Game of the Year" poll with this voting script I made. This poll is different from most polls you've seen-- in normal polls like this you have maybe five or so options, and you pick the one you like best. This poll...

We used to play a card game called 24 that a friend of mine invented. Remove all the face cards from the deck so that you're left with nothing but 2-10's and Ace's. Ace's are worth 1, everything else is at its face value. Each of the two players (this only really...

Bagatelle Board
One has a square board with nails that one rolls a steel ball down from top to bottom. At the bottom there is a box as long as the board that has a number of receptacles for the ball to fall into.

Hello all physicists/engineers!
I am currently in my last year of college and will be leaving to go to university next year (in the U.K). I am having real trouble deciding whcih course I want to take, so just to be on the safe side I have decided to take physics, just plain physics (maybe...

Denver-Buffalo was first and best. They made a first down and could have spiked the ball to stop the clock. Instead, they rush the field goal team out with about 10 seconds on the...

I am thinking something similar was also pulled off at the Rose Bowl in the 60's. Hmm this kid may become the next Karl Rove.
edit: Ah ha history repeats itself.

Using a dictionary, pick a world. The more obscure and hard-to-understand the better. Post it. The next person posts the definition of the previous word, a funny comment about it and then a new word. You may consult a dictionary.
I'll start:

Apart from all the path breaking works by Neumann and Nash on this subject, i was wondering if one could actually use this to explain the behaviour of subatomic particles or vice versa which by all means tend to attain stability. If one can work back from evolution games down to the actions of...
The "What is It?" Game continued
This picture reminded me of our old "What is It?" game. This was in the news recently. Can anyone guess what it is? If you guess it, you or another member can post their "what is it?". It can be either a picture or a question.
I'll even give a hint "think...

I am writting a book about programming game physics engines, much along the lines of "Game Physics Engine Development" by Ian Millington, however the focus of the book is Networked physics engines.
At the current time I have not been able to find a great deal of literature on...

Has anybody here ever played this game when you were bored? First you go on Wikipedia and select some random article. Then, you find a link on the page and go to the article it links to. Continue this process for long enough and you'll eventually end up at some article which you would never...
I ve got this simple problem and I can can not find the solution.

this is my game based on my wheel theory, the question is how many non-repetitive combinations of letters that link (eg. ab, bc, cd, and ag, gy, ly ect.) can be found in this game, i don't know it myself and i figure this is the best place to post the question since it's a bit involved. bonus...

Hi. I was wondering if it's possible to calculate bullet accuracy in terms of percentage in a series of ranges, given bullet's max effective range, a series of ranges, bullet mass and velocity with gravity (assuming no wind resistance, or any frictional resistance). I'm looking for a...
Dear All,
I'm still only on my second book of learning C++ although I've had plenty of programming experience writing snippets for games before. The first book was about 350 pages and introduced to me to everything up to and including OOP and inheritance.

I would like to learn more about the uses for the applied mathematics of Game Theory.

I have a great deal of respect for John Baez and This Week's Finds [TWF] and his colleges, David Corfield and Urs Schreiber, at n-Category Cafe [n-CC].
I struggle to understand the mathematics since my perspective is more physiological than mechanical physics. I probably misinterpret much of...
In the applied mathematics of Game Theory, dimensions are considered alternative strategies.

The aim of the game is simple (similar to the Math Q&A game). I will post a brain teaser, the first person to give the correct answer gets to set the next question, the first person to then answer this question correctly gets to set the following question... ad infinitum. A few rules before we...

Let Pile A and Pile B and Pile C contain objects.

I can't remember the name of the game, but I think it was made in the 90's. It features a flying ship where you attack ground and air targets. You get multiple upgrades that upgrade weapons, etc. It was in 32bit color, I think. I had a dream about this game but could not remember what it was...
What is the name of that game where you have a triangle shaped board with 15 (10?) holes and 14 (9?) pegs, and you have to jump each peg and your goal is to be left with one peg? Usually found at Cracker Barrel, and some other restaurants. Often says if you leave one you are a genius, 2 smart...

Hey guys how's it going this is my first post so take it easy on me  . I'm in my last year of electrical engineering technology, and we need to design and construct a final project. On the list of possible topics was the idea of a bio-med game interface. It would be biomed probes detecting...
Hey,
