Humans (Homo sapiens) are the most abundant and widespread species of primates, characterized by bipedality and large complex brains enabling the development of advanced tools, culture and language. Humans are highly social beings and tend to live in large complex social structures composed of many cooperating and competing groups, from families and kinship networks to political states. Social interactions between humans have established a wide variety of values, social norms, and rituals, which bolster human society. Curiosity and the human desire to understand and influence the environment and to explain and manipulate phenomena have motivated humanity's development of science, philosophy, mythology, religion, and other fields of knowledge.
Humans evolved from other hominins in Africa several million years ago. Although some scientists equate humans with all members of the genus Homo, in common usage it generally refers to Homo sapiens, the only extant member. H. sapiens emerged around 300,000 years ago, evolving from Homo erectus and migrating out of Africa, gradually replacing local populations of archaic humans. Early humans were hunter-gatherers, before settling in the Fertile Crescent and other parts of the Old World. Access to food surpluses led to the formation of permanent human settlements and the domestication of animals. As populations became larger and denser, forms of governance developed within and between communities and a number of civilizations rose and fell. Humans have continued to expand, with over 7.8 billion humans occupying almost all regions of the world in 2021.
Genes and the environment influence human biological variation in visible characteristics, physiology, disease susceptibility, mental abilities, body size and life span. Though humans vary in many traits (such as genetic predispositions and physical features), two humans on average are over 99% similar, with the most genetically diverse populations from Africa. The greatest degree of genetic variation exists between males and females. On average, men have greater body strength and women generally have a higher body fat percentage. Females undergo menopause and become infertile decades before the end of their lives. They also have a longer life span in almost every population around the world. The division into male and female gender roles has varied historically, and challenges to predominant gender norms have recurred in many societies.
Humans are omnivorous, capable of consuming a wide variety of plant and animal material, and have used fire to prepare and cook food since the time of H. erectus. They can survive for up to eight weeks without food, and three or four days without water. Humans are generally diurnal, sleeping on average seven to nine hours per day. Childbirth is dangerous, with a high risk of complications and death. Both the mother and the father provide care for human offspring who are helpless at birth.
Humans have a large and highly developed prefrontal cortex, the region of the brain associated with higher cognition. They are intelligent beings, capable of episodic memory, flexible facial expressions, self-awareness and a theory of mind. The human mind is capable of introspection, private thought, imagination, volition and forming views on existence. This has allowed great technological advancements and complex tool development possible through reason and the transmission of knowledge to future generations. Language, art and trade are defining characteristics of humans. Long-distance trade routes might have led to cultural explosions and resource distribution that gave humans an advantage over other similar species.
mass of the human soul...
quirky sounding title so sorry.
I have heard somewhere that human mass reduces by a few grammes or so when they die and some people say that this is the soul leaving.
Ok - so I'm pretty sure that is not the case.
If you consider the flow of blood around the...
After seeing images from recent Tsunami in Asia and hundreds/thousands of human corpses lying all over the place, i just wonder how bad is stench of rotting dead bodies lying in warm climate like in Indonesia? Is it kind of like regular road kill or dead cow, or maybe the smell is...
How can a human produce the greatest amount of physical power?
One method of producing a great amount of power is a bicycle. The strongest humans can output several horsepower for a while using a bicycle. But this seems limited because it involves primarily the legs without involving other...
Since the evolution of homo sapiens it appears that there have been some shifts in human consciousness. There have been shifts from a consciousness of hunting and gathering to the eventual consciousness that gave rise to agricultural societies. From this we have rise to our present industrial...
What will be the last existing vestige of the human race?
How shall it compare to the first such evidence?
Will it be characteristic of humanity in general?
i didnt know where this should go so i just put it in general. I am doing a culminating project on Voltaire in my philosophy class. one problem i encountered was that i don't know very much about Voltaire though he does seem interesting i know he was a poet, author etc but i don't know exactly...
Hey this is a weird subject but have any of you ever thought about what causes it, if it is indeed real? I have a theory but it may be totally wrong as I don't have a background in physics or chemistry. Well I read about solar neutrinos and how they pass through our bodies all the time. They...
Can somebody help me in giving information about the results of Human Genome Project.i hope there ultimate aim is to find out all the possible combinations of available 30000-400000 chromoomes in human body. Were they able to draw the expected results? My second question is whether any possible...
please, i need input
this is my first post in this forum, so hello everyone. i'd like to say that i have never really had experience in philosophy so if anyone recognizes my thoughts as someone elses theory then please tell me so i can look into it.now to the real stuff. I would...

I can get pretty far in this question, but I can't seem to get the final answer. The problem is:
Calculate the force required by the "deltoid" muscle, Fm, to hold up an outstretched arm. The total mass of the arm is 3.33kg. On the diagram, the pivot point I chose is the shoulder socket, and...
Ever since the ancient times we have noticed that the universe works in a certain way and we try to interpret it. In doing so we create models which are based upon our the physcial world (and to some extent, even if very little, culture and religion).
But the problem lies with the fact that...
From a biological point of view, when can a human be considered dead? after brain activity ceases? after the heart stops? after all human cells cease metabolic function? If a human brain were to cease functioning, but the body is kept going on a life support macine, with all basic functions...
Greetings!
Cloning technology has been developed so fast in recent years and it has drawn concerns from the public. Advanced technology has made cloning humans possible. In the future, there might be many clones of mine. Of course, this issue will certainly cause a lot of religious, ethic...
why does the human body need oxygen, what does the human body use it for.
is it possible to create a alternate gas that the human body can intake
Is it possible to alter human genetics to breathe poisons?
Years ago I heard about a study being done that concluded the majority of hit songs had a beat that was closely in synch with the human heartbeat. I have been googling around trying to find some reference on this but nothing's coming up. Does anyone remember such a study and who might have been...
A new super-cool book is "Race: The Reality of Human Differences," by Vincent Sarich and Frank Miele, 2004 (click here to read the whole book). Here are some interesting excerpts from the book:
"Strong evidence in the case for race comes from examining the amount of variation actually...
This book of Penrose is short, so you can read it in a whole day (as I did)
I first read "The emperor's new mind", and there's a continuation called "Shadows of the mind", but I have not read this, but the third part that carries the title of the thread

Suppose I store all information related to my consciousness or mind - memory, personality, IQ level, knowledge, and etc. - into a computer (when we've that kind of tecnology, of course). Now this data is equivilant to everything of me. Then I give this computer a body for it to move and excecute...
Dear Sir,
Can anyone inform me and discuss about it that"If a body travels or comes with speed of light so can it'll be visible for human, can human see that body"? or simple "Can human see the body if it come with speed of light"?
All comments r welcomed

I was just curious as to what mechanism in our body tells time. How is it that we can count 1,2,3,4,5,6,ect to a moderate accuracy? I would guess it gaugues something harmonic, but what do I know. Any help would be Grrrreat!
I've heard from someone that if you superimpose enough pictures human faces (of all races) on top of each other, you get something like a universal human face. I mean like if you have several samples and superimpose all faces from each sample, the end result from each sample would be the same...
Can someone tell me how fast the human eye can capture an

Please help me,
Would you please tell me where I can find tutorials about human senses analysis(es) or anything related ?

Do you feel that humans will ever reach a point where they just won't be able to understand something? Will we ever peak in our intelligence and if so how far into the future.

"No doubt": Human Activity Affecting Global Climate Change

Here is one story from the link.

The Earth is an estimated four and a half billion years old. If geologic time were somehow compressed into a single calendar year, on what date would human beings appear?
Why do the minds of many fear or even deny death? The mere thought of death for some people trigger panic attacks. Granted the mind's instintual reaction is to fear the unknown as a means of survival, but shouldn't the mind have already evolved to accept death? Does this mean that the true...
Is there any practice, belief, value, etc ... in human history (recorded that is) that has remained constant throughout the ages? Is there nothing we can agree on?
If no, then does it mean that no matter what we agree in the future - there can never be a claim of total universality (of the...

Two independent groups have recently claimed to detect methane on the Mars, one source has used the Mars Express Orbiter, and the other root had deployed the ground-based telescopes. I am of the strong opinion that Mars should definitely possesses some percentage of methane because it is such a...
What is human thought? Is it just a bunch of neurons firing? Or is it in a higher plane of existence? Do we form our own thoughts? I have been wracking my brain for a few days about this one and can't seem to finalise a theory.
Is every human action motivated by self-interest? Even when we help a complete stranger do we do it becuase it makes us feel good (and hence we are doing it out of self interest)? What do you think?
