I'm a high school senior at the moment and am interested in knowing MIT's stance in the theoretical physics community. I've heard it's a bad place for particle theory, but I'm not sure I want to go into that anymore. Recently I've been intrigued by SUSY and (less so) String Theory, but I'm...

As well as many other sciences and topics.

If someone wants to go for a Ph.D program for physics at MIT, then what are the general requirements? And, how long does it take, and how much does it cost?
I'm just wondering, but if you are a good student at HYPMS or maybe even UPenn, is there a good chance of earning near 100K fresh out of college? Or is this just a big misconception that most ambitious high school students have?

I got into MIT and the University of Michigan (out-of-state). In total, I'm getting like 25,000 in merit aid (including 20k from LSA) per year, bringing the bill down to about 20k per year--before I factor in my savings, work-study, etc. Though I haven't seen the aid statement from MIT, I doubt...

Anyone ever play with a handyboard from MIT? From what I gather, you can't use a high current motor with the stock handyboard unless you want to fry board, as it will only handle up to~600mA or so. How could one use a handyboard to control a high current, high speed ducted fan motor.
Many thanks

Hi everyone,
I'm a junior in Czech Republic and I'm thinking about applying to one of the US' top universities. I really love physics and even though we have a good university here I think that my chances of pursuing career in theoretical physics will increase if I go to the US. One problem...
In June 2007 I applied for a Ph.D. to some universities for Spring 2008.Up to November 2007, I didn't get any response from these universities. This in turn motivated me to apply for fall 2008. In spite of my despair , I applied to the top universities for the fall term.

Hi, I found it is a good video lecture in :
http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Mathematics/18-06Spring-2005/CourseHome/
so, as a beginner of linear algebra, It is a good stuff for you! All video can be downloaded to your PC. And Professor Strang is so nice speaking!
As exam time is right around the corner I'm looking to "brush up" on the cirriculum of my physics 11 course...
I have looked at many of the university videos on here, and although they are very interesting and broaden my physics perspective, they are far out of the scope of my course,
so that...
Has anyone done MIT's OCW for the Linear Algebra course? What do you think? I'm going to try to do it over Winter break at the public library.

Self-study, good textbook choices?

maybe I'm wrong but when i was following a lesson of mechanics by video lectures the teacher gave a very superficial definition of a vector as an arrow.

Just out of curiosity-
I had little exposure to Linear Algebra (I never took a full course). I have been watching the lectures on the MIT opencourseware. Seems pretty useful so far.

Google is quite useless in seeking such information so let me try it here, in case anyone knows any others who got into MIT math graduate school etc
