The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA ) is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government responsible for the civilian space program, as well as aeronautics and space research.NASA was established in 1958, succeeding the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The new agency was to have a distinctly civilian orientation, encouraging peaceful applications in space science. Since its establishment, most US space exploration efforts have been led by NASA, including the Apollo Moon landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle. NASA is supporting the International Space Station and is overseeing the development of the Orion spacecraft, the Space Launch System, and Commercial Crew vehicles. The agency is also responsible for the Launch Services Program, which provides oversight of launch operations and countdown management for uncrewed NASA launches.
NASA's science is focused on better understanding Earth through the Earth Observing System; advancing heliophysics through the efforts of the Science Mission Directorate's Heliophysics Research Program; exploring bodies throughout the Solar System with advanced robotic spacecraft such as New Horizons; and researching astrophysics topics, such as the Big Bang, through the Great Observatories and associated programs.
Are there existing tests that NASA specifies that determines the saturation point of a fly wheel?
Or must the test be catered specifically to each individual flywheel?
-Sorry I'm a bit of a newbie at Aersospace engineering!
Hi, I'm a fourteen year old kid, currently studying mathematics at ANU (Australian National University every Friday after school) and in Year 9 doing Mathematics advanced extended. We don't do physics at high-school yet (late Year 9 - 10), but I heard it is basic. I do physics as a hobby at...
Hi everyone. I'm making this post as a graduating senior in high-school, who's unsure of the careers that are out there for physics and astronomy, and how to pursue them. Any feedback is amazing :)
Just a quick background about myself: I've always loved science, pretty much any kind other...
So... NASA has 10 research facilities:

After attending a 4 year university, I'm interested in joining the AirForce. The AirForce is connected with NASA, I'm assuming, and I was wondering if this would make it easier to get a job at NASA. Is this true?
I'm in a tough situation and need help. I have the amazing opportunity to choose between and internship at IBM and an internship at NASA this summer. I know I'm in an great situation and probably can't go wrong either way, but I would still like to make the best choice and not just wing it. I...
I have a question about a recent NASA article Titled http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/science/cosmic-expansion.html" .
Is it safe to assume that when hypothesis talk about a low density bubble that they mean a density lower than expected? Meaning that they have taken into account...

When you consider the intergalactic scale and that there are something like 3x10^24 stars it seems so probable that life would exist--even in more complex forms.
I heard that other labs...
No its not but why do they not hire physicists? All the jobs are for engineers and astrobiologists. Don't they need scientists for research? For like the Hubble telescope or the new James Webb telescope? If I'm wrong tell me but I was just doing research and found no info on it.
So I'm confused. I understand that the Shuttle Program is coming to an end, which was expected. I'm a high schooler who really wants to become an astronaut, (I know, I'm silly) but I'm not exactly understanding what Obama has done to NASA, so could someone please elaborate? Are the Ares I and V...
Hello guys, I have a few Q's
So I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm seriously thinking about my future, just like I have been for the past 4 years. I really want to get into a good college to study math or physics. My problem is that I got a 'C+' in my Honors US History class. I hate to...
"Dec. 13, 2010: On August 1, 2010, an entire hemisphere of the sun erupted. Filaments of magnetism snapped and exploded, shock waves raced across the stellar surface, billion-ton clouds of hot gas billowed into space. Astronomers knew they had witnessed something big.
It was so big, it may...

This might EASILY be the most amazing discovery in several decades, if not a century.
Seriously, could anyone's theory have anticipated this discovery?
EDIT: Okay it might not be independently evolved from other lifeforms (gizmodo article was too...
Sorry if someone already posted this link but did anyone see this in the news?

What are people's opinions on what this might be?
Hey,
I'm interested in studying Aerospace Engineering when I leave high school. I have still 2 more years to go before I leave, but I'm really interested in space exploration, rockets, etc. The ultimate goal would be to work for NASA as an astronaut. At this moment, I'm taking Physics, Maths...
THeres probably an explanation for these, but the forum I discussed it on is a music forum so people are presuming UFO's/ExtraTerr

The popular perception certainly thinks so. When I tell people that I'm into astrophysics and they ask what I want to go into, they often ask if I want to go into NASA.
But I don't see NASA as a common profession for astrophysicists (it's really the planetary scientists/earth scientists who...
Greetings,
I've stumbled upon some peculiar images of our sun that appear to have extremely large objects in orbit which don't appear to be planets.
The images are from the following NASA database. Each image is taken every ~10 minutes...
Mars Now -- Third Alternative To NASAs Mars "Who Knows When" Program
My main objective, using current state of technology, is to safely get men and women to Mars and back to Earth without having to utter the phrase "People Will Certainly Die" as NASA does. To achieve this I would freeze all of...
Hi I will be attending University in the fall to obtain a B.A degree in Astrophysics.
Ever since I was little, I've wanted to be an Astronaut and have loved space, and obviously, still do.
However, I'm a bit worried, it seems that every Astronaut has an engineering College Education...
More goodies from NASA.
This time around they've been able to capture some remarkable high-resolution photos of the Sun. They also got footage of the Solar Prominence Eruption on March 30, 2010.

Hi Everyone,
I'm about to graduate from college with a BA in physics (basically BS but missing a couple of classes) and as I am waiting to hear back from physics grad schools (MS) I wanted to see if I could get some input about what kinds of work one can do with NASA. I've done the whole...

I was thinking in mechanical engineering or mechatronic engineering, i really want to build things and love physics and math. I only left 4 months to choose career, some lights please.
I am not sure if this was posted, or even if it belongs in Biology forum, but I found this a bit hinky
Is it plausible the sample was contaminated? What are the odds of 2 life forms being in such a remote location and with no food to sustain themselves...
As most of us know, President Obama intends to cut NASA's funding to such an extent that the Constellation project is going to be cancelled.
What is implicated in this decision is the fact that it will leave the USA without any space vehicle of any kind to get into space.
This means the...
I do not know which forum to place this in so it is here
Why has NASA so completely resisted ever experimenting with rotation in space to provide "artificial gravity" to mitigate the effects of weightlessness on humans?
NASA -- The Political/Semi-Science Organization
Hi,
I have these thoughts about NASA.
They Have a disrespect for life
The flew the Space Shuttle when they were warned not .. twice killing all on board
Suddenly, they are trying to get to Moon but are using old Apollo technology because...

Is this real stuff?
My first reaction was that that must be fake. Somebody just composed some sounds effects, and is making fun of astronomy. I didn't succeed in finding any debunking for that though, from the internet, yet. Then I found this NASA site...
I am going to be applying for an internship at JPL for NASA (Undergraduate Student Research Program).
Does anyone know anything about this? I've talked to a robotics engineer at JPL and he says any internship program is good, along with the Space Grant program.
I guess I'm wondering...
I am wondering what you guys think the future of NASA is going to be, what changes do you think the Augustine commission will make? Are we going to the moon as planned, skipping the moon and heading straight for mars, or are we going to just focus on the space station?
Hello guys,
I am going into U.S. Navy next year, and I am signed up in Nuclear Power Program (Nuclear Physics) thing in the Navy. Then, I will also get a bachelor's degree in the Navy while aboard a ship, and after all that six years, I can stay in Navy, and go for the PhD for physics, so...

I bought a nexstar 114gt a few months ago, and I have been unable to use the auto align features, which would allow me to use the tracking and goto features on the telescope. I am not certain if the telescope itself is flawed, or if I am simply doing something wrong. I sent two emails to...
I am really interested in NASA, but after doing a little research on starting salaries I quickly became concerned. If this website is correct (http://nasajobs.nasa.gov/jobs/entrypay.htm ), NASA starting salaries are almost half of what I am expecting from my other potential offers.
