In mathematics, a quadratic form is a polynomial with terms all of degree two ("form" is another name for a homogeneous polynomial). For example,
4
x
2
+
2
x
y
−
3
y
2
{\displaystyle 4x^{2}+2xy-3y^{2}}
is a quadratic form in the variables x and y. The coefficients usually belong to a fixed field K, such as the real or complex numbers, and one speaks of a quadratic form over K. If
K
=
R
{\displaystyle K=\mathbb {R} }
, and the quadratic form takes zero only when all variables are simultaneously zero, then it is a definite quadratic form, otherwise it is an isotropic quadratic form.
Quadratic forms occupy a central place in various branches of mathematics, including number theory, linear algebra, group theory (orthogonal group), differential geometry (Riemannian metric, second fundamental form), differential topology (intersection forms of four-manifolds), and Lie theory (the Killing form).
Quadratic forms are not to be confused with a quadratic equation, which has only one variable and includes terms of degree two or less. A quadratic form is one case of the more general concept of homogeneous polynomials.
I was given a bunch of quadratic homework and I'm stuck on a few problems:
"Brendan buys a black of shares for $1895. When the share price goes up by $4/share, he sells all but 15 of them for $1740. How many shares did he buy?"
I got the equation \frac{1895}{x} - \frac{1740}{x + 4} = 15...

hey there reader
i have:
y=3x+11
y=2xsquared+2x+5
i have to solve these as they are represent a straight line and a curve respectively. so far i have:
3x+11=2xsquared+2x+5 at the intersection
;2xsquared-x-6=0
i factorised this and checked it to make sure it matched the above...
so i got a block with mass=m traveling on an oiled surface. the block suffers a viscous resistance given:
F(v)= -cv^{3/2}

so far i have;

Dear members,
For the general equation ax^2 + BX + C = 0 ,
what does increasing/decreasing the a, b and c values do to the graph ?
Are they related to each other or not ?
If C was 0 will the graph always be symmetrical about the origin or is this my misunderstanding ?
Thankyou...
A bit of a newbie question, but I was wondering how does one go about solving these?
For example: (I was working on a problem posted on another thread on Homework Help)

Epsilon is a small positive number of course :P
The tricky part is when I split...
hi, i am trying to show that
dv/(1- (v^2/v_ter^2)) = g*dt which after integrating is
v=v_ter*tanh(g*t/v_ter) (motion with quadratic drag) can also be obtained by using natural logs.
so far i have this:
letting u = v/v_ter
i can use partial fractions to get
du/(1-u^2) = 1/2...

in a maths book i have there is an example of solving a quadratic. part of the process reads:
y^2 - 12y + 32 = 0
implies that
(y-8) (y-4) = 0

f(x) = -2x^2 + 12x + 12
I was able to express it in standard form and find the maximum value, but I can't seem to get the x-intercepts
I got -2x^2 + 12x + 12 = 0
-2 (x^2 - 6x + 6) = 0
does that mean I need to use the quadratic formula or did I do something wrong?
