Research is "creative and systematic work undertaken to increase the stock of knowledge". It involves the collection, organization, and analysis of information to increase understanding of a topic or issue. A research project may be an expansion on past work in the field. To test the validity of instruments, procedures, or experiments, research may replicate elements of prior projects or the project as a whole.
The primary purposes of basic research (as opposed to applied research) are documentation, discovery, interpretation, and the research and development (R&D) of methods and systems for the advancement of human knowledge. Approaches to research depend on epistemologies, which vary considerably both within and between humanities and sciences. There are several forms of research: scientific, humanities, artistic, economic, social, business, marketing, practitioner research, life, technological, etc. The scientific study of research practices is known as meta-research.

Do research supervisors always want more student to supervise?
Say some undergraduate student wants to do a research project for some professor for free with no course credit?
Will a professor be always happy to take on that student?
Good day, ladies and gents.
I am an Indian student of Electronics and Communications engineering currently studying in India. However, I wish to do research in a field of physics. I'm not sure at the moment of which one since the number of how many interest me is too numerous (however, if you...
Hi all,
I'm a researcher in mechanical engineering. I like taking note on every paper I read or the result of most of the analysis I carry out on my daily work. I use MS Onenote to type down notes and I believe it's a great tool. I'm searching for advices on the organization of notes. I'm...
There seems to have been a major step forward in complexity research. somebody wrote a pleasant understandable piece about it in Quanta magazine.

Hello.
I'm a first year physics student (just about done with my first semester). I've heard it is possible for undergrads to get involved with a professor's research, and I'm wondering how one should approach a professor about this. Is it just a matter of striking up a conversation about it...
I am working on a research paper on the topic of the Josephson effect. We are to write this paper as if it were to be published like a scientific journal entry. My professor did not like my abstract. It was probably too much like an introduction. I have reworked it. Could you guys comment...
Hello,
I am an amateur scientist and I’d like ask a question about the cost (estimate) and if it’s even possible to conduct a specific research relating to quantum physics.
What I want to do putting it simply is to entangle millions of particles even billions and measure their spins.
Is...
So I'm a senior in high school and so far I've had pretty average grades. Taken Algebra 1, Geometry, Honors Algebra 2/Trigonometry, Precalculus, AP Calculus AB and gotten mostly B's with some A's and some C's. I'm not proud of my grades, but I just wasn't able to grasp the concept too well. I've...
Hello, my name is Lucas and I am currently in year 11. For my research project I decided to research mechanical and mechatronic engineering to compare both of the occupations in order to make a decision of what I want to pursue as career. If you have the time, please feel free to help me answer...
I am in high school right now and i would like to be a physicist but i heard a lot of physicists become engineers or programmers instead of a research physicists. And what is the difference between experimental and theoretical.
I'm a first year student in college and I've started shadowing under a grad student, who's in a nano-optics research group (http://www.nanoscience.ucf.edu/chanda/), in order to learn about microfabrication. I'd like to start conducting my own research soon; however, i don't know exactly what it...

Do physics graduate programs have any preference of working with a single professor for several semesters or working with several different professors each for just a semester or two?
Is it disadvantageous to stay with one professor for your entire undergraduate career?
What is quantum computing research mostly focused on? I mean, is it mostly about a physical point of view ( Like building better quantum transistor, or better quantum diodes, or, for example, using entalgment effect, to achieve better purposes), or is it mostly focused with quantum architectures...
Hi everyone I'm a Chinese American and I love doing science. I've been learning Chinese to reconnect with my original culture but I'm wondering if Mainland China is also a good place to do scientific research right now too. Specifically I'm interested in the field of bio-energy and stuff.
