Can a self adjoint operator have a continuous spectrum ??
If we have a self adjoint operator
Ly_{n} = \lambda _{n}
can n take arbitrary real values (n >0 ) in the sense that the spectrum will be continuous ?
and in that case, what is the orthonormality condition for eigenfunctions...
So, for engineering, I am in collge and studying calc II, will go onto III, diff eq. ,linear Algebra, and eventually Analysis .
However I really want a good knowledge in all mathematics. So I am stuck what I should study on my own. Should I start with number theory?
Ahoy,
I'm trying to do a calculation of the electron-electron self energy of a Fermi Liquid, which is supposed to exhibit a dependence on the square of the temperature of the system.
I've read through the first six chapters of "Green's Functions for Solid State Physicists" by Doniach and...
Hello! I am thirteen and self studying real analysis... I'm wondering where to go after this; kinda looking for a general outline of what to do from here on out. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Greetings everyone.
I’m interested in spending some of my free time this summer trying to teach myself Calculus in preparation for college this fall. I spent a great deal of time searching for used textbooks on amazon.com and decided to go with “Calculus” 7th edition by Larson Hostetler and...
I am a older student that would like to go back to college and take higher level mathematics. I want to teach myself geometry, trig, and Pre-calc before i go back. Could anyboby recommend a book, tutoring software, or website that can help accomplisc this task.
This year I am a sophomore in High School taking Algebra II. Since I got a B this year in honors English, I decided to self teach myself Precalcus(Math Analysis) with the hopes of taking AP Calculus BC my Junior year. I want to impress the colleges, chiefly The Wharton School of Finance, with...
Hello,
I will be a junior next school year, going into the honors level precalculus courses available at my school. Both precalc functions and precalc trig are required to get into ap calc. There is only one honors level precalc teacher who is a very tough grader and is known for having...
I’m an ME major and like studying certain math topics outside my curriculum in my spare time. I’m having a hard time deciding what books to get and I’m guessing that a good start would be finding a good book on writing proofs. I've bought one but there are no solutions for the exercises. This...
Hello,
I am a physics major and just transferred to UC Davis from a community college. My multivariable calculus course did not for some reason include vector analysis even though it tranferred as such. In other words, the requirement is met, but I don't have the knowledge. I did audit a...

I think the article speaks for itself, its certainly something that has been voiced alot, ie is fighting terror aggressively the best way to reduce...
I've learned that you cannot deal with the interaction of a charge with its own field in classical electromagnetism. It is said, that this is simply the case with classical theory, and you have to deal with it. But how can this be? If accelerating charge is giving energy to the field, then it...
I'm currently in high school and studying physics, 2 maths ("normal" and the most advanced course, the normal is required for the advanced one by the way) as well as a few other subjects.
I'm planning to study Electrical or Mechanical engineering or science. Maybe both. But that's...

I was just wonder what force keep protons from "merging" into each other. As I understand, the reason I can't put my hand through a wall is due to the electromagnetic repulusion of electron. Protons on the other hand, repeal each other, but after a certian distance the strong nuclear force...
My book says self pollination maintains the parental characters or purity of the race indefinitely and is used to maintain pure lines for hybridization experiments.
How can that be true. Coz, meiosis takes place in micro & mega spore mother cells. So there is crossing over which will lead to...
I was wondering if there would really be any major difference in studying a subject by yourself, than learning it in a class. Basically, the class just regurgitates information that is in a textbook, right? So, would it be feasible to self study Calculus 3, provided that one has a syllabus at...
I'm taking a college physics course which is calculus based, I am doing awful in it can anybody recommend a good book that can break the topics down for me.
any help would be appreciated.
How do you guys think the first self arose in nature, conceptually and physically?
Also what is a good definition of a self?
How about this one:
A self is the feeling that some things are part of that which experiences them ánd that other things are not part of that which experiences them. In...
OK, I want to self study classical EM in greater depth than my electromagnetics course, and I plan on working through Jackson (I am currently an undergrad). I want to get into the relativistic treatment of the subject. However, to properly tackle this, I feel my mathematics background is...
So, my present situation is that I dropped out of high school following the end of my junior year at the end of last year, got a GED, and am attending a community college this coming September. I took the AP calc and physics tests and did pretty well on them and I've been studying a linear...

I do like the song and the...umm..boost in self confidence. The link works with any name, I just choose "evo" randomly
Your thoughts?
Hi All, I was hoping someone could help point me in the right direction. I'm interested in simulations of General Relativity with generic mass distributions that are self gravitating, i.e. that the metric of the space-time being considered is dynamically altered by the distribution of mass whose...
This question is bugging me, and I think I need to get it answered before I move on to working on the "harder" problems. I hate being stumped by the little stuff like this. Anywas, I'm including the question that I have as an attachment, it will be easier for all.
Thank you!
Over at the PSYCHE online journal they are having a discussion of Metzinger's theory of phenomenal consciousness and selfhood. Here is a link to his precis of this theory:

I am going to copy a couple of paragraphs from this...
I'd like to expand a bit about a comment I did in the other subforum. I find it amusing that while Planck scale is a good cutoff for Gauge theories, it is not a good one for gravity?
The point is that for a cutoff \Delta x in position space, we expect to use a cutoff \Delta p= \hbar /\Delta x...
Is it true that there are cases in which the radiation reaction force on an electron is nonzero even if its acceleration is constant? I am confused because the radiation reaction force is proportional to the time derivative of the acceleration.
Also when considering the radiation reaction...
I am half way done with Physics 2. I don't feel that I learned enough and I want to review and relearn physics 1 and 2 during the summer. What is the best physics textbook, which is the most popular for freshman physics. Also, and most importantly, which is the best for self-learners?
Thanks
Where to start self study of higher mathematics?
I am a student who just finished high school and i am going to go to college this fall. I got like 7 months to shape up my maths and physics because my country got only 10 years of school. I want to ask if i could self study on all the advanced...
My teacher hasnt been in and I am trying to self teach this topic. Can anyone help me with this question, its probably quite simple but I am really stuck  :frown:
A flat circular coil of mean diameter 3.0cm has 500 turns and is situated so that the plane of the coil is perpendicular...
In this ever more dangerous world can you defend your self ? In the UK it is
illegal to carry an offensive weapon of any kind, so i think it would be lucky
to escape a gang of thugs.
What are your ideas on getting out of such situations ?
I know there are several threads asking for textbook recommendations, but I need something special: I am teaching myself math, and need a Linear Algebra textbook from which I can learn on my own. I really want to obtain a thorough math education, and I'm almost done with calculus (Stewart's), so...
I'm asking from a mathematical aspect, please be as exact as possible.
Suppose A is an observable, and B a Borel set in R (real numbers). Without further assumptions on A, I would like a general expression for the probability of measuring one of the values from B for A.
The reason for my...
Can you explain why an idea is so dangerous that it must be suppressed? Specifically the concept that the Pauli exclusion principle may be able to explain why the self-gravitation of the quantum vacuum has not yet collapsed the diameter of the universe to a few thousand kilometers (and may be...
This question may have no value since it defeats itself. We can't use logic to discuss an illogical god.
Nonetheless I would be interested in other peoples thoughts on the possibility of a "not-always-logical" god.

Can anyone throw some light on its relevance, I believe it relates to Self Evident Theoretical Inquiry, or...
After an abortive start in the new IR Forum I am beginning a new thread on the published theory of Self Creation Cosmology.
There has already been many posts on the subject in PF and I apologise for any repetition, but having been asked to post it here in A&C I here make a clean start!

SpaceTiger has created a very valuable thread on Mainstream Cosmology. For good scientific practice it is important to compare standard theories with testable alternatives, however ST's thread is not the place to do it. The theory of Self Creation Cosmology (SCC) presents itself as such a...
One has to provide an input to start an oscillation, but that input can be
removed and the oscillation will continue.
So when we talk about space time, if the original, "input", is no longer
present we are looking at an effect and have to guess the cause.
So could we work backwards...

I have a job as a salesman in a store that gets maybe 5 customers a day if I'm lucky. No excessive chores (vacuum, clean bathrooms, takes maybe an hour all together), so I'm left with hours of time of not doing anything. So I figure (especially over the summer) that I might as well learn a...
