Hey,
I’ve got a test in one week’s time and was studying through my textbook of geometry and trigonometry. I came across a “rule” which shows how to simplify expressions in the form of a \cos \theta + b \sin \theta but I do not understand how this “rule” works.
The simplify rule:
a \cos...
I've been working on a statics problem and I need to solve for theta, the equation I have right now is (4/5) = sin(theta) + cos(theta).
I can't remember how to get theta out of this, my brain isn't functioning very well tonight... Been up too long :(
Hello Physics Specialists,
I am having some difficulty understanding the Work Equation with respect to the Cosine Theta portion of the equation.
Work = Force * Distance * Cosine(theta)
Attached is a picture of two hypothetical mechanical devices. I understand how to calculate work...
DJGriffiths, 3rd ed., Prob 1.37: derive the \hat{r}, \hat{\theta}, and \hat{\phi} unit vectors in terms of \hat{x}, \hat{y}, and \hat{z}.
I know the formula and how to find them, but derive them?? ...unless this is what is meant?

When figuring the force between 2 points, no angle the result is calculated just by distance (and charge). But when there are 3 points, either 2 charges or more and a point or 3 charges, why is there an angle calculation?
Hai, I have a question solving a cubic equation. I have a function
y=ax*x*x+bx*x. I want to get a solution for the value of a and b. From reference, I found that a=(xtan(Theta)-2y)/(x*x*x) and
b=(3y-xtan(Theta))/(x*x)
[Theta] is an angle or tangent of each point x along a cubic curve or...
The handle of a floor mop of mass m makes an angle theta with the vertical direction. Let muK be the coefficient of kinetic friction between the mop and the floor and muS be the coefficient of static friction. Neglect the mass of the handle.
a) Find the magnitude of the force F directed...
A projectile is launched from origin at angle theta with horizontal, whose position is given by r(t). For small angles, distance from origin always increases. But if projectile is launched nearly straight up, it goes to a farthest point and then moves back down towards origin, so distance to...
I tried to do this problem with related rates and calculus. We have not done physics with calculus, however. The other way I thought about was using the angular velocity of the board when the stick is taken away. I cannot seem to solve it though.
A common physics demonstration consists of a...
A mass m= 9.3 kg is suspended from a sting of length L=1.57 m. It revolves in horizontal circle. The tangential speed of the mass is 3.14 m/s. What is the angle theta between the string and the vertical in degrees?
I started off by using the equations Lsin theta= mv^2/ r and Lcos theta=mg...
In my Physics 231 class (Calculus Based) I was given a homework problem asking me to prove the following equation. It had a picture attached but the equation was:
Tan (theta) = 1 + (2M / m)
The two (m) represent different masses balanced in equilibrium while hanging with 3 tension forces...
Hey everyone,
My math teacher gave us the following vector problem:
"Three coplanar forces of xN, 10N, and 20N act on a body and maintain it in a state of equilibrium. If the x-N force acts along the horizontal and the 10-N force at an angle of 60 degrees to the horizontal, find the value...
 After spending about an hour on this problem, I've become completely convinced that my math book is wrong in the answer it provides. Am I wrong or right? This is from the Harcourt Geometry and Discrete Mathematics Text.
Question:
Find the sum of the vectors u and v if theta is the...
A uniform ladder of length L leans against a smooth (no friction) wall. The floor is also smooth (no friction) and the ladder makes an angle of Theta-0 with the floor when the ladder is installed at rest.
a) Before the ladder leaves the wall, express the equations of motion of the ladder in...
Two polarizers are oriented at 38.8o to each other and plane-polarized light is incident on them. If only 14.6 percent of the light gets through both of them, what was the initial polarization direction of the incident light?
Ok, I'm not exactly sure what this problem is asking for, do they...
Hello,
I am given the method: y_(n+1) = y_n + h f(t_n + w h, (1-w)y_n + w y_(n+1).
I am to determine the region of absolute stability;
I am also to determine for which w in [0, 1] is the method A(a) stable,
i.e., the region of absolute stability contains a sector about the negative...
Hello,
now we are in phasors and I am missing something in this problem:
given a circuit of indep current source (5cos(wt)), R, L (with vL(t)) all in series, no values for them,
although voltage across inductor vL(t) = 3cos(wt + theta), we need to find theta.
So, by using impedance for...
Vectors A, B and C form a triangle. The angle between A and B is \theta and the vectors are related by C=A-B. Compute C . C in terms of the magnitudes A, B and the angle \theta and derive the law of cosines C^2 = A^2 + B^2 - 2AB cos \theta .
I have no idea what C . C means but I asked and...
Need some help with this answer.
A mass m on the end of a string in length L. At the bottom it is given a push to a speed V. What is the tension as a function of theta, where theta is the angle from the intial position?
I don't know how many are familiar with this math club, I think it is mostly a southern thing, but here is a question which remains to stump me.

Ball mass m and radius r rolls down ramp with coefficient of static friction of mu. If the ball is released from rest what is the maximum angle theta of the ramp that the ball rolls without slipping?
I've got theta max = inverse(tan(mu)) but the answer in the book is

I need help with this question (the picture is attached):
A foot, mass of 4 kg, is suspended by a pulley system. The net traction force needs to pull straight out on the leg. What is the proper angle theta for the upper rope?
I know that the system is frictionless so the tension in the...
Would very much appreciate a hint on how to start this off.
So far I have cos theta = (1-t^2)/(1+t^2). After squaring this and doing various substitutions, I get (cos theta)^3, which can't be right.
hello there
consider a spring that is fixed to a point (i have tried to draw a picture, so to make it clearer as to what i am talking about) that rotates anti clockwise in a horizontal fashion. there is a ball on the end of the spring with mass m, the spring has spring constant k and...
Hey everyone,
I'm trying to solve for theta in a derivitive of a ballistics equation and I'm afraid I'm stuck. My trigonometry is a little rusty, can someone help me out? I have:
cos(theta)*sin(theta)=gd/2v^2
With the information I'm given I can solve the the right side of the equation...
Polemically speaking, if the standard model is so good, and we understand it so well, how come there are so many different explanations for the new theta pentaquark?
What is that guy, anyway?
All the best, Jim Graber
Hello, I'm studying pendulums and their proporties, and I really need to know the sin/tan/cos of theta. If anyone can help, please help. (And also, I need to know what theta is)
