A turbine ( or ) (from the Greek τύρβη, tyrbē, or Latin turbo, meaning vortex) is a rotary mechanical device that extracts energy from a fluid flow and converts it into useful work. The work produced by a turbine can be used for generating electrical power when combined with a generator. A turbine is a turbomachine with at least one moving part called a rotor assembly, which is a shaft or drum with blades attached. Moving fluid acts on the blades so that they move and impart rotational energy to the rotor. Early turbine examples are windmills and waterwheels.
Gas, steam, and water turbines have a casing around the blades that contains and controls the working fluid. Credit for invention of the steam turbine is given both to Anglo-Irish engineer Sir Charles Parsons (1854–1931) for invention of the reaction turbine, and to Swedish engineer Gustaf de Laval (1845–1913) for invention of the impulse turbine. Modern steam turbines frequently employ both reaction and impulse in the same unit, typically varying the degree of reaction and impulse from the blade root to its periphery. Hero of Alexandria demonstrated the turbine principle in an aeolipile in the first century AD and Vitruvius mentioned them around 70 BC.
The word "turbine" was coined in 1822 by the French mining engineer Claude Burdin from the Greek τύρβη, tyrbē, meaning "vortex" or "whirling", in a memo, "Des turbines hydrauliques ou machines rotatoires à grande vitesse", which he submitted to the Académie royale des sciences in Paris. Benoit Fourneyron, a former student of Claude Burdin, built the first practical water turbine.
Im new to this forum and wanted to see what you think about my new patent pending design. My concept is...using a 2.5Mw wind turbine, refit 110'L rotor blades with a 10-12' diameter of concave vanes or paddles designed to capture max air thru a forced ducted system that is generated from a large...

Hi geniuses,
I have a question about a Tesla turbine.
I'm brainstorming about using a small one as a leightweight "engine" on a kayak, using the flow of the water as energy source.
First of all, I do realize that this won't run on its own in a perpetual motion style.
But my question is...
For years I have been wondering why wind turbines are designed with very skinny blades (photo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Turbine_aalborg.jpg ). Most of the available wind passes right through the circular "reach" of the device without touching the blades. Wouldn't it be more efficient if...

I am considering the idea of making a small scale wind turbine for my final year B.Tech project. I have run into a roadblock, I have to maintain the generator at a relatively constant speed. I was thinking of 2 parallel shafts one from the Turbine blades coupled via a CVT to the shaft to the...
Hi All,
For a small steam turbine to generate power at a rate of 50 kW/h.
How many BTU's of heat required per hour, also water consumption per hour, how do you work this out?
So I have a turbine falling through the air such that the free-body diagram for each of its rotor blades would look like:

And the whole turbine spins counterclockwise
I understand that for this case you can split drag into form drag and...

I wonder why water turbine (like in hydroelectric power plant) has, in most design, more then 90% efficiency when steam turbine around 30%.
In both cases we converting the pressure to work, so why such a difference in efficiency?
Hi,
What is the best way to design the root region of a wind turbine blade (for a small model turbine: 0.7m diameter, Re ~ 10,000)? So far we've selected our airfoil and calculated the chord lengths (proprtional to 1/R) but can't find any mathematics on the root region. At what point should...

Hey Forum,
I am working on a plan to build a recharging setup. What I want to do in theory is take a jet turbine or a smaller RC turbine that burns bio diesel and turns at around 60,000 RPM. I want to take this high speed rotation into a chain or belt...
Description of method: The rotor's mass is constant so when it accelerates in a given wind, it does so with an acceleration = torque/mass. This acceleration will depend essentially on wind speed. If tests are carried out in the open with non-turbulent winds it is possible by using a tachometer...
