A university (Latin: universitas, 'a whole') is an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research which awards academic degrees in several academic disciplines. Universities typically offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars".The first universities were created in Europe by Catholic Church monks. The University of Bologna (Università di Bologna), founded in 1088, is the first university in the sense of:
being a high degree-awarding institute;
having independence from the ecclesiastic schools, although conducted by both clergy and non-clergy;
using the word universitas (which was coined at its foundation);
issuing secular and non-secular degrees: grammar, rhetoric, logic, theology, canon law, notarial law.
What are the job prospects in your opinion for graduates of a school you never knew existed as compared to a respectable institution, even though the same programs of study are accredited by the same company.
Hey,
I am in the process of choosing which univeristy I want to go to do my first degree. I am am also thinking about doing a PhD after I finish my first degree. I would like to do this PhD at a good international university in the US or in wider europe e.g MIT. With that in mind could...
Right now the University of Toronto is my first choice for undergrad in physics. I have read some posts by some people who went to U of T, Vincebs I think it was, who say that the averages are kept really low and it will be hard to get into grad school with. Is this really true?
I was...
Well, I'm in the first Calculus-based introductory physics course. It's my first physics course since high school in 2002. I think I'm doing fairly well. The first exam is next Thursday. I want to do the very best that I can in this course as it is laying the foundation for the road ahead. What...
How is the Masters level in Electrical Engineering at (1) Syracuse University (2) SUNY Binghamton University? I plan on working in industry right after, no intention on PhD. I eventually want to obtain a MBA and move into management.
Is (1) or (2) good? If not, any reasons?
I know (1) and...
Hey starting uni soon and i need to buy a calculator. The uni has given us a list of approved calculators, but i really don't know which one to go for. They have stated that they cannot be programmable or graphic calculators. Here is the list they have given us...
I applied there in December (for a Phd in EE) and they sent me an email inviting me to visit during their engineering grad school recruitment day. They are paying for all air fare, meals, and hotel costs. I am really looking forward to going. I'll get the chance to meet the engineering dean...
I read quite a lot about a few universities around Australia, i am currently at High School at Coffs Harbour and to get the best education i will be forced to move (which is cool because "good something to bad rubbish"). I will go to university 2 years before i graduate yr 12 (HSC), I can do...
I got an offer to apply here (undergrad) for free and I'm wondering if this is a good place for physics or if it would be any better than a state school (UW, WSU, other Washington schools) because it costs a LOT more. I really like that it's basically in NYC, I think that would be a pretty cool...
It is my first year in university, I was wondering about the aim of a Lectures, since all the information introduced in the lectures are found in the textbook required and in the additional reference textbooks ( one or two ). It may be a stupid question, what is the aim of the University...
I just got accepted in a public university (SIUC), does it make a difference when you apply for a job or masters? Do people from the top universities get an advantage or somethin??
Hello everyone,
I just started my first year at university and I was interested in getting some feedback from other students on how they studied. Now I would like some feedback from students who were non-grinders, so could study in very little time but still get excellent grades; such as A's...
Hi all, I'm a student at a mechanical engineering faculty, and I'm doing my final project now.
The purpose of the project is to built a sensor for measuring gravity-capillary waves in a wind-wave flume. The idea is to pass a laser beam from beneath of the aquarium through the aquarium...
I have read/heard that private institutions offer more financial aid, is this true in general? I ask this because I can go to college in my state for around $15,000 per year but it seems like most private schools cost $30-40,000 per year.
Also if private schools do give you more financial...
I am preparing to apply to a graduate school of physics. I have taken the GRE general test and TOEFL. But I have not taken the GRE Subject test. I find nearly all the universities in US require the GRE Subject test. Is there any university that do not require the GRE Subject test? Or I will have...
I have been debating this since I started university. Are lectures worth going to?
The fact is, when learning math and physics I find it hard to grasp anything as it is being said. The only reason I show up is because of the well done physics demonstrations. But really... I'm a book guy...
Hello everyone!
I am a high school student trying to get into U of Waterloo or U of T.
My english mark is 56% and I really don't want to take it again. However, with this english and my best 5 other subjects my average will (hopefully) still be high enough to meet the minimum requirement...

Are there any major universities doing research on renewable energy (solar power) or energy generation? It seems that many of the companies that are working on renewable energy are looking for EE degrees rather than physics degrees. Should I consider an EE degree if I want to do research in...
Since I've been in elementary I've wanted to become a programmer of some type, I never knew what field, whether theoretical, software engineering, OS design, or compiler theory. I was just generally "interested" in all aspects of programming "animals" ( I like similes :p ). However recently in...
I'm a Caribbean student in my final year of high school and want to go to a University in the United States. Could anyone give me an idea of how good the engineering programs, notably chemical are at these schools:

How difficult is it to get into the certificate program? They...
I don't know what engineering degree to pick? Mechanical or electrical! I like both. I also heard of integrated engineering at some university? any idea about that?
I've been told conflicting things by many people in higher places than my own.
Some say its detrimental to get a BS and MS from the same school when looking for a job.
Others say that it really doesn't matter.
So my question is why would it hurt me to stay/how could it help me to move...
Hey, I finished the IB diploma in 2007, with a 6 in Physics HL, and I am hoping to get into engineering eventually.
However during my high school years i really didnt have much direction to my studies and ended up taking math studies (for those who don't know, it is a really pathetically weak...
I was on a forum and someone said you can get a law degree together with a BS majoring in (physics,chemistry,enivornmental,ect.)This sounded kind of strange is that usefull at all and do most universitys even let you do that?
Hi,
I've just graduated from school and getting ready for university. I really love computers and astronomy-astrophysics. I've decided to follow a career as an a electrical and computer engineer and not physics. I've chose this mainly because I will find a job easier than going to physics (at...
When a person can self-study and gain accreditation through certification exams?
Are there examples of such examples in the IT industry, for example? Does the IT industry even care about one's credentials, irrespective of educational background?
I just graduated from high school, and planning to get into physics major.
Right now I am applying, assumed being accepted, at 3 uni:

I haven't looked into the technical requirements of this yet, but I wonder what it might be worth even if I could do it. Basically, I am thinking of starting my own college so that I can award myself a degree from it.
Some explanation...

DeVry University??
You see Devry commercials all the time. Give your researched opinion. IS it worth going to, poor, or excellent?
I know they give associates degrees in Business and technology and even bachelors in engineering.
