A valve is a device or natural object that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries) by opening, closing, or partially obstructing various passageways. Valves are technically fittings, but are usually discussed as a separate category. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure. The word is derived from the Latin valva, the moving part of a door, in turn from volvere, to turn, roll.
The simplest, and very ancient, valve is simply a freely hinged flap which swings down to obstruct fluid (gas or liquid) flow in one direction, but is pushed up by the flow itself when the flow is moving in the opposite direction. This is called a check valve, as it prevents or "checks" the flow in one direction. Modern control valves may regulate pressure or flow downstream and operate on sophisticated automation systems.
Valves have many uses, including controlling water for irrigation, industrial uses for controlling processes, residential uses such as on/off and pressure control to dish and clothes washers and taps in the home. Even aerosol spray cans have a tiny valve built in. Valves are also used in the military and transport sectors. In HVAC ductwork and other near-atmospheric air flows, valves are instead called dampers. In compressed air systems, however, valves are used with the most common type being ball valves.
I am looking to open a series of valves in a chamber under 10" of lift(water) ~.36psi which are normally held closed by a very light spring and the constant air pressure. The valves are very light weight and range in surface size from approx 2 to 6 sq inches, or approx .72 to 2.16 lb of initial...
Hi,
Smoluchowski's trap door was proven to fail to obtaining work in a system without heat difference. The problem turns is random movement of trap door due to random particle movements. However I could not find any discussions of such system where the "trap door" did not involve moving parts...
When i read the manual, it said if the valve face is too wide and narrow, it need to cut the valve seat to meet the specification.
I guess if the valve face too narrow, then the valve performance is not the best.
but i don't understand if the face too wide, what is the problem.
Hello,
I do not really know if this is the right place to post this message ... if it's not then I'm sorry

I need to compute for the relief capacity (gpm or lb/hr) of a 10" rupture disc with relief valve set at 180psig. Vented out into the atmosphere. Assume fluid is water at 140F. I tried using ASME and API Equation but they give different answers. Can someone tell me the correct answer and what...
Hi,
I'm looking for a standard (CGA, ANSI, ISI, etc.) which lays out requirements for the marking of pressure ratings on shut off valves (which aren't cylinder valves) in the USA. Does anyone know what it is or if it even exists? Any insights are much appreciated.
Thanks!

I am investigating the cause for malfunction of a solenoid water inlet valve (when de-energized, the valve fails to close and instead exhibits cyclic surging of water flow). 4 of the 6 bleed holes are blocked with debris, and I have concluded that this is what caused the valve to malfunction...
My boss has a boat load of extra PVC piping laying around the shop and I wanted to use it to make a pipe organ. I need a way to electronically open and close the connections from each individual pipe to the main air supply. I'm on a tight budget and I'll need to make 88 valves in total. I have...
Hello,
How can one calculate the dimensions of valve shims in Gas pressure shock absorber?
Desription-
The valve shims are orifices to the fluid flow in the hydraulic damping system. The dimensions play a very vital role in the adjustment of compression and rebound of the damper.
I have...

How exactly would you describe the principle of a valve for flow control?
In a globe valve for example the fluid flows through valve seat and generally leaves the valve with the outlet diameter being the same as the inlet diameter.
My original assumptions were that Bernoulli's principle...
I just watched a video by Koenigsegg engineers and came across this question. Why is camshaft the primary control of the engine valves? Using electronic controlled actuators would certainly benefit the engine in aspect of performance, but might increase the cost of production as well. People...

For the evaporator and condenser, if I wish to have a...
Hi,
I was wanting to insert 1 inch foam balls inside a container of ferrofluid, causing the foam ball to float.
A normal one-way water valve would not let the ball through without any leakage (I believe), therefore I think that If i can build a valvue that consists of a ring of neodynium...
Hello, I'm Nate, and I'm looking to build a compressed-air engine. I'm using a pneumatic cylinder with a 3" bore and a 12" stroke. That was simple enough to find. What hasn't been simple to find is a manual valve large enough to actuate it. I've found small 5-way valves on ebay and amazon, but...
I have been looking at the basic operation of a heat pump. On these pumps there is an expansion valve. This valve is a narrow hole where the condensed working fluid is passing through, then evaporation happens in the low pressure side - after this hole.
I assume this valve act as a resistance...
Hey!
Yesterday I was on the Czech Physics Olympiad. There were many examples. To one, however, I did not invent anything, because I don't learn Hydrodynamics to much.

Hi folks. I had a strange thing happen to me and I was wondering if some of you physics gurus could explain it to me. It's my understanding that gas escaping from a pressurized tank makes things cooler. In fact I recently had to empty my scuba tanks for transport and the valves did indeed ice up...
I was looking at 2 inch actuated valves. In the Indian market they cost around 12,000 rupees(~$220). I have a couple of car window control motors. I was thinking of building a valve with it.
I would appreciate your thoughts on some simple design.
Hello, I am using a 3 way NC, manifold mount bullet valve from mac. I am finding that with my current setup, the valve leaks vacuum in ports 2 and 3 (I was told this is intentional). For my application, I would like to use two 3-way valves to control vacuum from a reservoir to a suction cup...
Hi there.
I've been scouring google for a valve that will release a fluid (preferably a liquid) once 5psi has been reached. It must be within 100 x 40 x 40mm (the smaller the better). Has anyone any idea where to find a product like this?
Many thanks.

Hey,
Just something i wanted to confirm, in a pipe system a booster pump is used to boost the water pressure. A accumaltor is postioned after the pump, a non return valve is required at the pump outlet. I believe the non return valve should be before the accumaltor but after the pump.
Is...
I have a hand pump that I use to pump air out of things with and the plastic valves that I use keep failing eventually. Either from being under too much pressure, or from being under pressure for too long. I guess there's like a diaphragm in the valve that weakens and begins to leak.
Here's an...
Hi everyone,
I have to determine the size of safety valve for an air pressure vessel. I found in ASME and BS 5500 a procedure to calculate the size of safety valve, which relates the mass flow capacity to the: pressure, temprature, discharge area, s.v coefficient, and air parameters. This can...
