A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.

In the back of the economist there are articles about new research. One of them was about a paper published in science I think. It concerned deviations form what general relativity predicts for the velocity of space probes.

Hi, I'm an incoming freshman at SUNY Stony Brook. I know it might be a little early planning for my next summer, but I want to make sure i don't waste it like i did this one. I worked at a camp job and watched the Lewin lectures on freshman physics (to supplement AP physics) and the MIT lectures...

Alpha centuri...4 light year relative to who?
Hi,
Here it goes.
Suppose it takes 4 light years to get to alpha centuri.
So if I could travel at 99.99999% the speed of light and the people on Earth remains stationary(as in moving very slowly which is << C).
So does my clock shows 4 years...

Explaining E=M C^2 to 14 year olds ?
Hi,
I have been asked to give a "very" brief talk to to some 14 year old kids on the subject E=M C^2. I can write this all down using formula and it makes sense. But to "say" what this means at the right level, I am having BIG problems. I can only talk...

I have to choose my disertation for next year and I've been given a selection of topics. I'm interested in doing an MSc/PhD in high energy physics but my school doesn't have anybody working in that area (only quantum gravity).

hi,
I am an undergrad student in India doing my second year(physics) at the chennai mathematical institute.
I have done a few courses in General Relativity and Cosmology and am doing projects during this summer. I understand that most US universities are not willing to take 3 year undergrads...
I would like to clarify what I am thinking now that I would like to be certified in Cosmology,
I am now 30 years old (nearly half of my lifespan). What conditions are there for me to acquire it ? Is there a chance of Cosmo job for a 35 year old man ?
What book is used for next year's 1st year physics at University of Toronto? I have a very old Fundamentals of Physics, I read it but didn't do that much problems. (though I did contest questions) I want to restudy everything, this time doing all the problems. I want to buy the exact textbook...
I've got a few questions related to transferring to a 4 year university from my community college. After the fall semseter, I'll have 60 credits, which is enough for my general studies associate's degree. That would give me "priority admission" to Towson University, which is where I intend on...

My parents are willing to pay $25,000 of my tuition and I will have to take out loans on the rest of my expenses. Should I do this to go to the superior school or go to a state school like UVA or VT which my parents would pay everything for?
Supposing that I don't have to worry about my finances I would like to stay an extra year in school. There are additional math, engineering , and computer courses that I think would really benefit me. Would this look bad for a grad school app or job?

Today is Friday the 13th. It's the first of 3 this year. Is 3 more than you'd expect in a year?
Here's how I'd calculate it.
12 months, each with a 13th. 7 days in a week, so each month has 1/7 chance of having a Friday 13. 1/7 x 12 = 1.71.
So this year is significantly more...
