Are Mad Scientists Really Just Another Cliché?

In summary, the portrayal of mad scientists as a cliché in media and pop culture is not entirely accurate. While there are certainly examples of exaggerated and stereotypical depictions, real-life scientists who push ethical boundaries and pursue unconventional ideas do exist. The term "mad scientist" is often used as a shorthand for any scientist who is perceived as eccentric or unconventional, but it oversimplifies and dismisses the complexities and nuances of scientific research. Overall, the idea of mad scientists as just another cliché is a limited and misleading perspective.

How did you find PF?
I've been reading science news on PF now and then for ages.
Just another run of the mill mad scientist added to the pile.
Wish list: I really want the Ig Nobel price, seriously.
I'm happy to swap with a Honorary Ph.D. degree to anyone who nominate me successfully.

What work have you done that you want to be nominated for?

Thank you for your reply.
Fact is that my work is too serious to ever be considered. Colleagues and others have heard me joke about this for years. And while I have considered writing something to lure the committee to consider me, they most likely will spot that I am fishing for their attention, as such a work would be inconsistent with other things I have done. So the suggestion I made is equally not serious, as the IG-Nobel prize itself.

Mad scientists are alright. At worst they cackle maniacally while submitting yet another revision of a manuscript, hoping against all hope that this time the the margins are formatted to the liking of reviewer #3.
It's the mad engineers one should worry about. They are the ones building death rays in the garage.
