I am an interested layman with some autodidactic background. This said am not a crank or crackpot just a curious member of our time.

Welcome to the forum, but I do find it odd that you feel the need to get that out up front. What immediately comes to mind is the Shakespeare line "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"
