In summary, there has been an announcement that when Direct X 10.1 is released in 2008, previous Direct X 10 hardware will still be able to use the DX10 features, but the 10.1 release will mainly be for future hardware. It may take a couple of years before games start utilizing 10.1 features, so it shouldn't be a concern for at least a year or two.

I'm not sure if I would really use the term obsolete. DX10 hardware will still be able to use the DX10 features which are supported within DX10.1. The 10.1 release will mainly be support for future hardware. There's not a lot of developers out there really pushing DX10 support as it is so, it'll be quite some time before we see any games that will utilize 10.1 features. I say give it two years (one year at least) before it really needs to be taken into consideration.

There are definitely mixed opinions about the upcoming DirectX 10 to 10.1 upgrade. On one hand, the new version promises improved performance and features, such as better anti-aliasing and texture support. This is great news for gamers and developers who are always looking for ways to enhance their gaming experience.

However, the downside is that all previous DirectX 10 hardware will become obsolete, as you mentioned. This means that those who have recently invested in high-end graphics cards and other hardware may feel like they have wasted their money. It also puts pressure on consumers to constantly upgrade their hardware in order to keep up with the latest technology.

On a positive note, the upgrade will likely push hardware manufacturers to release newer and more powerful products, which could ultimately benefit consumers in the long run. It also provides an opportunity for developers to create more advanced and visually stunning games.

Overall, while there may be some drawbacks to the DirectX 10 to 10.1 upgrade, the potential benefits and advancements in technology make it an exciting development for the gaming industry. It's important for consumers to stay informed and weigh the pros and cons before making any decisions about upgrading their hardware.
