Hi, I'm planning to embark on a minor research project on Space Weather with a Professor. As part of getting ready for the project, I've been tasked to study certain important aspects of Solar Physics & understand conceptual ideas. Can anybody recommend good books or even descriptive papers on introductory-intermediate Solar Physics?

I shall be very grateful.

That’s a mighty broad topic.
From poking around the web:

Foukal Solar Astrophysics
Hanslmeier The Sun and Space Weather
Moldwin Introduction to Space Weather
Khazanov Space Weather Fundamentals
Cowling Magnetohydrodynamics

popularizations
Eddy The Sun, the Earth and Near-Earth Space

Hi, Thank you so much. Such awesome recommendations, really really helpful for a solid primer on the topic!

FAQ: Good Book Recommendations on Solar Physics

What are some introductory books on solar physics for beginners?

Some great introductory books on solar physics for beginners include "The Sun: A Very Short Introduction" by Philip Judge, which provides a concise overview of solar phenomena, and "Introduction to Stellar Astrophysics" by Francis LeBlanc, which covers fundamental concepts relevant to understanding the Sun.

Are there any recommended textbooks for advanced studies in solar physics?

For advanced studies, "Solar Physics" by H. K. D. A. van der Linden is highly regarded, as it covers both theoretical and observational aspects of solar phenomena. Another excellent resource is "The Physics of the Sun" by A. J. H. C. de Jager, which delves into the physical processes governing solar activity.

What books cover recent developments in solar physics research?

"The Sun: A Laboratory for Astrophysics" by J. W. Harvey and "Solar Astrophysics: A New Perspective" by J. E. Trujillo-Bueno discuss recent advancements and current research trends in solar physics, including solar dynamics and magnetic activity.

Are there any popular science books about solar physics that are accessible to the general public?

Yes, "The Sun: Our Nearest Star" by David A. Aguilar is an engaging read that explains solar physics concepts in an accessible manner. Another popular option is "The Sun: A Biography" by Robert A. Jacobson, which explores the Sun's significance in both science and culture.

Can you recommend any books that include observational techniques in solar physics?

"Observing the Sun: A Handbook for the Amateur Astronomer" by John W. McCready is an excellent resource for those interested in solar observation techniques.
