Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering Undergrad Senior Design Project

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on a senior design project in mechanical/aerospace engineering, where students must create a prototype that addresses a specific problem. The original poster is seeking ideas related to aerodynamics or fluid mechanics but is struggling to find a unique concept within a $70 budget. Suggestions include exploring bicycle fairings, which can reduce drag, improve speed, and offer partial rain protection while being feasible to construct within the project's constraints. The conversation highlights the importance of originality and practicality in project selection. Overall, the focus is on generating innovative solutions that align with the student's career aspirations in aerospace engineering.

TL;DR Summary
Request for senior design project idea help
Hi everyone,

This semester I'm enrolled in a senior design course where the students must fully design and fabricate a project from scratch that solves a problem. I've been struggling to think of ideas, so far I have some ideas on a windmill/turbine and a few electricity generation device ideas but none of them seem to be that solid or original.

I was hoping to create a project that is related to aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, or aerospace engineering as this is where I intend to take my career but I've been having a lot of trouble thinking of ideas. Each student has a budget of about $70 (USD) and we need the project to have a prototype and final product. The project also needs to solve some kind of a problem or improve on a previous design.

Any kind of suggestion or nudge in some direction to help jumpstart my brain a little bit would be a huge help. Thanks!

Search bicycle fairing for some ideas. Reduces drag for better speed, partial protection from rain, and simple enough to build in the time available on the allowed budget.

Now how did I know that you were going to suggest that...?

That sounds like a great idea, thanks for the input I'll check it out!

Thread 'Turbocharging carbureted petrol 2 stroke engines'
Hi everyone, online I ve seen some images about 2 stroke carbureted turbo (motorcycle derivation engine). Now.. In the past in this forum some members spoke about turbocharging 2 stroke but not in sufficient detail. The intake and the exhaust are open at the same time and there are no valves like a 4 stroke. But if you search online you can find carbureted 2stroke turbo sled or the Am6 turbo. The question is: Is really possible turbocharge a 2 stroke carburated(NOT EFI)petrol engine and...
I need some assistance with calculating hp requirements for moving a load. - The 4000lb load is resting on ball bearing rails so friction is effectively zero and will be covered by my added power contingencies. Load: 4000lbs Distance to travel: 10 meters. Time to Travel: 7.5 seconds Need to accelerate the load from a stop to a nominal speed then decelerate coming to a stop. My power delivery method will be a gearmotor driving a gear rack. - I suspect the pinion gear to be about 3-4in in...
