I just happened to encounter the following video that covers the Napoleonic Wars - the southern war in Spain/Portugal and the Northern or Eastern War in Russia, then Germany, and finally back in France.

What a stupid and terrible waste!

I recently learned that a 4th great grandfather served during the first Battle of Copenhagen (1801) on a British warship. He was part of the crew who took the Holsteen (Holstein) back to England. I'm still trying to work out the details.

FAQ: Napolean's disaster and European chaos (1808-1814)

What were the main causes of Napoleon's disaster in 1812?

The main causes of Napoleon's disaster in 1812 include his decision to invade Russia, which was driven by the desire to enforce the Continental System and punish Tsar Alexander I for withdrawing from it. The harsh Russian winter, logistical failures, and the scorched earth policy employed by the Russians further exacerbated the situation. Additionally, Napoleon underestimated the resilience and tactics of the Russian army, leading to catastrophic losses for the Grande Armée.

How did the defeat in Russia affect Napoleon's control over Europe?

The defeat in Russia significantly weakened Napoleon's military might and undermined his authority across Europe. The massive losses in troops and resources led to a decline in his ability to maintain control over the territories he had conquered. This emboldened other nations, leading to the formation of coalitions against him, which ultimately resulted in a series of defeats in 1813 and 1814.

What role did the War of the Sixth Coalition play in the European chaos from 1813 to 1814?

The War of the Sixth Coalition was pivotal in the European chaos from 1813 to 1814 as it united several major powers, including Russia, Prussia, Austria, and the United Kingdom, against Napoleon. Following his disastrous campaign in Russia, these nations capitalized on his weakened state, launching a series of successful military campaigns that culminated in the capture of Paris in 1814, leading to Napoleon's abdication and exile.

What were the consequences of Napoleon's abdication in 1814 for Europe?

The consequences of Napoleon's abdication in 1814 included a power vacuum in France and a significant shift in the balance of power in Europe. The Bourbon monarchy was restored, leading to the Congress of Vienna, where European leaders sought to restore stability and prevent the rise of another dictator like Napoleon. This period also marked the beginning of a conservative reaction against the revolutionary ideals that had spread across Europe during the Napoleonic Wars.

How did the events from 1808 to 1814 influence the future of European politics?

The events from 1808 to 1814 had a profound influence on the future of European politics by highlighting the fragility of empires and the importance of national sovereignty. The rise and fall of Napoleon demonstrated the potential for rapid change in political landscapes, leading to a greater emphasis on diplomacy and alliances in international relations. The Congress of Vienna established a framework for European diplomacy that aimed to maintain a balance of power and prevent large-scale conflicts, a principle that would shape European politics for the next century.
