It was a record breaking 113 F in Los Angeles today. 99 even at the beach! I don't think I would survive the night at my place. I am camping out at a hotel with air conditioning. With my cat.

I want to live here.

It's going to be hot tomorrow, but not as [STRIKE]ridiculously[/STRIKE] ridonkulously hot as today. Wednesday the temps are supposed to start dropping into the 80s. I'll be checking out tomorrow morning.

I had dinner on the restaurant patio tonight, and watched a stunning sunset over the water. I went swimming. I had a cocktail. It's like a mini vacation. Ooh, now, I should pick a movie from the TV. Maybe "Get Him to the Greek"?

The hottest I ever saw in Vegas was 117, but most summer days it hovered around 104.

Good news - it's slated to be only 97 today, and all the way down to 90 tomorrow.

Jesus girl. For the money you spent on that "vacation", you could have bought a window-unit and ask a few (3) of your guys friends who are good at that sort of thing to come over and install it for you.

You know MIH I do remember you messing around with air conditioner designs. All you really need is just a fan and a bag of ice.

I've been thinking of designing a HEPA air filter + UV germicidal lamp + air cooling unit myself. A sort of an air conditioner that you don't hang off a window, but rather that just stays in the middle of a room. I think the total cost of parts to be around 400 bucks, but its worth a project

They go for around £100 - £200 so not that expensive in comparison to a hotel (although I'd hate to see your electric bill).

Yes, we have them. I've used one before. Two things about it that I didn't like: it was loud, and when the condensation container would fill a loud alarm would sound. Not nice waking up to that every two or three hours !

FYI, and others who are interested. If you are ever planning to fly mid-day from an airport where the temp is 120 F or above, check with your air carrier before heading off to the airport. I was in Phoenix not long ago, and they cancel flights because... big drumroll here... you are dying to know aren't you... it is because the hot air does not provide enough "lift" for fully loaded jets to take off, the runways are too short.

I am sure partially fueled, partially passangered (is that a word ? I hope so) would be allowed. A good rule of thumb is that if your flight is heading to a hub, say Charlotte, NC, there is a good chance it is full, and is subject to cancellation, or if the airlines got creative, they could offer a number passengers (up to the safe weight takeoff limit) a free flight to go on standby. The bottom line is, once the temp's are over 120 F it is a brave new world where we have not gone before as far as flying is concerned, something to keep in the back of your mind.

If she has an unused or rarely used room, just open the window in that room, cut a hole in the door that leads to that room, and install the air conditioner in the door. The landlord won't even notice.

I wish I had air conditioning maybe a week or two each year - especially now that the big shade tree in the back yard is dead. Used to only get direct Sun on the house around 4:00 PM and later - now the direct Sun starts a lot earlier in the afternoon.

But with fall, the Sun isn't getting as far North in the sky, so it's not as much of a problem even on the warm days.

I have two portable room AC units (vent hose out the sindow) but they just weren't keeping up during out heat wave, so I bought a Friedrich window unit. The portables are back in storage now, and the window unit will come out soon. October is usually quite tolerable. Anyway... 113? I was wilting when we had weeks of highs in the 90s.

I agree, pilots are well informed, and FAA rules are in place to handle it, but the swirling mass of humanity out there that flies commercial flights (for the most part) isn't. Once we have a number of days that exceed 120 however, they will be in short order, you can be sure of that. That will be one more thing to consider when flying to parts of the world with temps above 120.

I do have a portable A/C unit that I use, but it would have been no match for the conditions yesterday. It just doesn't blow cold and hard enough, and my place was an oven yesterday afternoon. My apartment is a heat trap because it has a funny shape, and it is an upstairs unit with a black roof.
