TL;DR Summary: I am looking for ideas to contain an earthworm so that a (large) turtle can get at it and eat it without it (the worm) escaping.

Winston the Reeves Turtle is too dumb to chase after (terrestrial) live food. More accurately, she is highly distracted by any pinkies or knuckles anywhere within three yards of her enclosure, and so she can easily be outsmarted by a lowly earthworm. The worms will invariably crawl off the platform and die on the floor, or fall in the water and drown.

I literally need to hand feed her. And even then, it's even odds that she will drop the worm on her way to the water and then forget it until it's too late. I'd like to encourage her to be a little more independent and at least pretend she doesn't need to be hand-fed. I'd like to be able to leave the room for ten seconds without her food outwitting her.

So I'm blue-skying ideas for how I can trap and earthworm in such a way that she can see it, and eat it, but it can't escape.

Any grill she can put her (one inch diameter) head through is far too large to hold an earthworm.

I don't think my method for mealworms will work. I used a length of thread to make a noose and hung them from the grate over her basking area. They would stay there until she ripped them down. I don't think I can secure an earthworm with a loop of thread.

A simple box with an open top might hold an earthworm but it would probably need to be about five inches tall. And then it would have to be quite wide for her to get her 8" carapace in.

I don't know if putting out a little sandbox or dirt box for them to bury themselves in would work. For one: if she doesn't see them she won't eat them; two: I'm not sure they wouldn't try to escape anyway. And three: all that dirt dragged around will mess up the aqua-terrarium.

Outside-the-box suggestions?

I can see them no problem. Are you logged in when you do that (I don't think that should make a difference, though). I'm using Firefox on Win10 -- what are you using?

Maybe try clearing your cache to see if that helps?

Weird. I just logged in using a private Firefox window in case my Mentor credentials were helping me, but I can see the pictures fine in the private window as well.

Maybe it's because I'm still using Windows 7?

I dunno, but @Baluncore is reporting the same problem, and I'm pretty sure he's up to at least Windows 8...

I'll check this on my Android smartphone to get another view into the potential problem.

Okay, no problem accessing the thread or the attachments from my Android Pixel 6 phone. Here are screenshots of the 2 attachments that I clicked on with my phone (sorry that the turtle's face got cut off in my first screenshot):

I wonder why I can't view them? I don't have a smart phone; only a PC running Windows 7.

Ack, my "smart"phone turned the image sideways when I reached for the buttons to take a screenshot. Lordy. Here is a better screenshot where I was careful about the orientation of my phone while clicking buttons:

Does this issue occur with other threads and attachments?

Ahahaha. I can't see my own pics either.
I uploaded them on my laptop but now can't see them on my phone.

I wonder if those pics are actually links rather than uploads. They could be links to where I posted them on the reptile forum.

Same problem/error message trying to view the images.
They are NOT links to outside, they show as:

View attachment 351440
View attachment 351439

And clicking on them in this post has the same non-result.

(browser Mypal version 28.13.0)

Cheers,
Tom

Nope, I can see them fine by clicking the thumbnails or the links. And I can see berkeman's screenshots, but not Dave's attachments. Firefox on Android.

I see a slight difference between the URL formats. Perhaps an internal URL for the attachments that aren't meant to be public was somehow surfaced.

Guys. Those images in the original post are from a forum for which I have to sign in.

Even I can't view thm on my phone.

IOW, this is a me problem, not a you problem.

I have fixed the images in the original thread by uploading them to PF, rather than linking to them.

I'm still getting the "Oops" message.

I'm not sure how the attachments work but I have replaced the original (turtle food) PF thread's links with uploaded content. In theory, the attachments at the top of this thread no longer have anything else pointed to them (other than in that quote).

Is it possible that PF performed garbage collection on those attachments?

Still getting the oops message.

I'm wondering why you posted this link?
Where did I post that? (Admittedly, I may have posted it and then removed it.)

I was trying to show where the original images came from - which is from my thread on ourreptiles.com.

When I made the first (turtle food) thread, here on PF, I believe I may have simply supplied links to those pics, rather than copying them or uploading them.

If that's the case, then PF is trying to point to images on another site. For all we know, the Oops problem is not a PF problem but a blocker on the other forum.

The original thread that triggered these comments now works for me, I can see the photos.

All the links in this current thread still fail with that OOPS message.

Thanks @DaveC426913, Looks like problem solved! (til the next time )
