AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around seeking recommendations for books on astronomy, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and string theory, particularly for someone without a formal physics background. The user expresses a strong interest in these topics despite studying economics and having limited formal education in physics. Several book suggestions are provided, including "Introductory Astronomy and Astrophysics" by Stephen A. Gregory and Michael Zeilik, "Understanding Space" by Jerry Sellers, "Fundamental Astronomy" by H. Karttunen, and "Feynman Lectures on Physics Vol 3," although it's noted that the Feynman Lectures may require a stronger foundation in physics and math. Additionally, the "A Very Short Introduction" series from Oxford is recommended for accessible overviews of various scientific topics. The user expresses gratitude for the recommendations and plans to seek out the suggested books.

Since summer is near i want to take some astronomy, astrophysics book...or maybe quantum mechanics and string theory! Any suggestions?

Physics news on Phys.org
there are a science book forum for that.

also give us your background so that approriate books can be recommended for you.

Moderators will move this thread to the correct forum for you, so don't panic.

I wanted to post this here but i couldn't...but nvm that. Tnx for replay!
About background...i really don't have physics at school because I am in economy school...but i like it very much i watch a lot of videos on youtube, read on Wikipedia and forum and i know more then some one at my age who has physics in school. As i said i want something about space...astronomy...theories maybe.

Here's a few recommendations;

Introductory Astronomy and Astrophysics by Stephen A. Gregory and Michael Zeilik.

Understanding Space by Jerry Sellers

Fundamental Astronomy by H. Karttunen

Feynman Lectures on Physics VOL 3

yours

Obs

Tnx i will go to find them this week!

Feynman lectures require physics and math background

I suggest books from "a very short introduction to _________" from oxford

This thread only works as a summary from the original source: List of STEM Masterworks in Physics, Mechanics, Electrodynamics... The original thread got very long and somewhat hard to read so I have compiled the recommendations from that thread in an online (Google Drive) spreadsheet. SUMMARY Permits are granted so you can make comments on the spreadsheet but I'll initially be the only one capable of edition. This is to avoid the possibility of someone deleting everything either by mistake...
By looking around, it seems like Dr. Hassani's books are great for studying "mathematical methods for the physicist/engineer." One is for the beginner physicist [Mathematical Methods: For Students of Physics and Related Fields] and the other is [Mathematical Physics: A Modern Introduction to Its Foundations] for the advanced undergraduate / grad student. I'm a sophomore undergrad and I have taken up the standard calculus sequence (~3sems) and ODEs. I want to self study ahead in mathematics...
