Engineering What Are the Job Duties and Salaries of Petroleum Engineers?

AI Thread Summary
Petroleum engineers primarily focus on the extraction of oil and gas, involving tasks such as designing drilling plans, overseeing production operations, and ensuring safety and environmental compliance. The job typically requires strong analytical skills and knowledge of geology and fluid mechanics. Salaries for petroleum engineers are generally high, often exceeding those in finance, especially for entry-level positions. However, job opportunities are geographically limited, primarily in oil-rich regions. Overall, transitioning to petroleum engineering could lead to lucrative financial prospects, but it comes with specific location constraints.

I've recently become interested in switching majors from Math to Petroleum engineering. I have no idea what one would do as a petroleum engineer though. I realize that it's very restricting location wise but that's about it.

The pay is good right out of college but my idea with a degree in maths was to get into finance. Which line of work do you think would ultimately end up with a higher salary?
What does an average day look like for a petroleum engineer?

Hello Physics Forums Community, I'm hoping to draw upon the community's collective wisdom regarding a procedural challenge that I believe many independent researchers face. I'm working on a self-contained theoretical framework from a foundational starting point. The work touches upon concepts from general relativity, quantum foundations, and cosmology, attempting to connect them based on a single relational principle. It has now reached a point, where some parameter free values seemingly...
