What Do Telescope Specifications Like 6x16 and 175/1000m Mean?

AI Thread Summary
The specifications 6x16 indicate that the telescope magnifies objects six times and has a lens diameter of 16mm, which is suitable for daylight use. The focus range of 0.25m to infinity allows for viewing objects at varying distances. The 175/1000m specification describes a field of view of 10 degrees, equating to a width of 175 meters at a distance of 1000 meters. Higher magnification results in a narrower field of view, providing more detail but requiring more head movement to see different areas. Understanding these specifications helps optimize the use of the telescope for viewing purposes.

Hi I'm legally blind, so I own a small telescope that I use to see the board at school and stuff. On the front of it are these specifications:

6x16 0,25m-infinity

175/1000m 10degrees

What do they mean?

Thanks for your time.

6x16
The first number is the magnification, things appear 6x bigger
The second number is the diameter of the lens (in mm) bigger collects more light.
16mm is quite small (2/3") but should be good enough in daylight.

0,25m-infinity
The focus range from 0.25metres to infinity

175/1000m 10degrees
The field of view, 10 degrees or if you prefer a 175metre wide field at 1000m metre distance.
this is related to the magnification a bigger magnification is a smaller field of view - so more detail but you can see less without moving your head.

Thanks for the great response! All makes perfect sense.

Thread 'Simple math model for a Particle Image Velocimetry system'
Hello togehter, I am new to this forum and hope this post followed all the guidelines here (I tried to summarized my issue as clean as possible, two pictures are attached). I would appreciate every help: I am doing research on a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. For this I want to set a simple math model for the system. I hope you can help me out. Regarding this I have 2 main Questions. 1. I am trying to find a math model which is describing what is happening in a simple Particle...
Thread 'How to model converging illumination through object plane (in ZEMAX)'
Hello community, I'm designing a projection lens system for a 35mm film projector in Zemax OpticStudio and struggling with the correct sequential mode setup for the illumination geometry. The light source is a Xenon short-arc lamp reflected by an ellipsoid mirror, which creates a converging cone with a 40.6 degree full angle that passes through the film gate. The film gate is my object plane, but the light doesn't diverge from it like a typical Lambertian source. Instead, the converging...
