AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on determining the damping constant and time function from the equation v(t) = 8ε^-106t. The damping constant is represented as α, and the time constant is calculated as 1/α. A participant expresses confusion over their calculations, questioning whether the "e" in their calculator corresponds to the "ε" in the equation. Another participant requests clarification on the original equation and the source of the value for t. The conversation highlights the need for clear definitions and proper understanding of mathematical symbols in the context of the problem.

Homework Statement

Determine the "Damping Constant and Time Function"
v(t)= 8ε^-106t

Homework Equations

∝=Damping Constant =
1/∝=Time Contstant = 1/DC

The Attempt at a Solution

-848ε^-106t = DC then 1/DC = *1.087x10^-49

It does not look right...Is the e in my calculator the same as the "ε" being used in the equation?

I'm not sure what you're calculating, or why you're calculating anything. Can you explain what your equation is about in your solution attempt? Where did you find a value for t?

Thread 'Have I solved this structural engineering equation correctly?'
Hi all, I have a structural engineering book from 1979. I am trying to follow it as best as I can. I have come to a formula that calculates the rotations in radians at the rigid joint that requires an iterative procedure. This equation comes in the form of: $$ x_i = \frac {Q_ih_i + Q_{i+1}h_{i+1}}{4K} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i-1} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i+1} $$ Where: ## Q ## is the horizontal storey shear ## h ## is the storey height ## K = (6G_i + C_i + C_{i+1}) ## ## G = \frac {I_g}{h} ## ## C...
