In summary, an article about the HR diagram for a mass of 75 suns in Main Sequence states that a rough interpretation suggests it is about 106 suns. A search on the internet and Wikipedia did not provide this information. Further research on WHL0137-LS10^6 shows that it is significantly larger and hotter than the Sun, with a mass of 50-100 solar masses and a temperature of more than 20,000 K. In comparison, UW Canis Majoris is hotter at 30,000 K, but smaller with a maximum mass estimate of 40 solar masses. Its luminosity is also much greater, at 330,000 times that of the Sun.

10^6 sounds about right. It is both much larger and much hotter than the Sun, being 50-100 solar masses and more than 20,000 K, between 3-4 times as hot as the Sun. As a comparison, UW Canis Majoris is hotter, at roughly 30,000 K, but is much smaller, with mass estimates placing it, at most, around 40 solar masses. Its luminosity is upwards of 330,000 times greater than the Sun.

FAQ: What is the luminosity of Earendel?

What is luminosity?

Luminosity is the measure of the total amount of energy emitted by a celestial object, such as a star or galaxy, per unit time. It is often expressed in terms of the Sun's luminosity, which is equivalent to 3.828 x 10^26 watts.

How is luminosity calculated?

Luminosity is calculated by multiplying the surface area of a celestial object by its temperature and the Stefan-Boltzmann constant. The surface area and temperature can be determined through various methods, such as observations or theoretical models.

What is Earendel?

Earendel is a fictional star in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth universe. It is described as the brightest star in the sky and is associated with the character of Eärendil, who sails through the heavens on his ship Vingilot.

How is the luminosity of Earendel determined?

As Earendel is a fictional star, its luminosity cannot be accurately determined. However, based on its description as the brightest star in the sky, it can be assumed that its luminosity would be much greater than that of the Sun.

Why is the luminosity of Earendel significant?

The luminosity of Earendel is significant because it is a key element in the mythology of Middle-earth and plays a significant role in the story of Eärendil. It also adds depth and richness to Tolkien's fictional universe and allows for further exploration and analysis by fans and scholars.
