An old favorite of Tsu's dad. Sorry, we don't know where the tune comes from, so I can only write the words.

The Boarding House

In the boarding house where I live
Everything is growing old
Long gray hairs are in the butter
And the bread is full of mold

When the dog died we had, sausage
When the cat died, catnip tea
When the landlord died I left there
Spareribs were too much for me

And a very, very short drinking tune, Leprosy.

Leprosy!
My God I've got Leprosy
There goes my eyeball
Into my highball

Harry Chapin had his share of sad songs. My favorite is Taxi. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert shortly before his tragic death in 1981.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfqjKDRQvWI

When I was a kid my dad listened to Burl Ives albums (those black round things with a small hole in the middle) all the time, mostly 45's. He had many happy songs (e.g. holly golly Christmas), but many sad ones as well. I remember one about a green turtle and another one about a guy walking a long way home (20-30 miles) in a blizzard and collapsed and died within sight of his house (with wife inside).

Wow, that's it! I had the artist and distance (7 miles) wrong, but it is definitely the one.

Another one that comes to mind is 'Seventeen' by Janis Ian:

Maggie May by Rod Stewart is a sad song if you really listen to it.

Another one is Otis Redding:

This song is about a mother who almost lost her all five children. My 6 year old was very sad after this song. Fortunately, the song theme turns good at the end. I hope our animal loving Evo won't get too sad...

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only two little ducks came back.

Two little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack, quack."
But none of the five little ducks came back.

Sad mother duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
The sad mother duck said
"Quack, quack, quack."
And all of the five little ducks came back.

 I almost didn't make it to the end. The heartbreak, the sorrow. Then a Happy Ending!

Sometimes it makes you feel better to cry, sometimes to laugh. I'm surprised we can come up with so many sad songs without going completely Country Western.

"Runaway Train" - Soul Asylum

This is a song about teenage runaways. In the video for the song, names and pictures of missing children were displayed during each chorus. Several of these children were found.

SAD MOVIES (ALWAYS MAKE ME CRY)Sa-a-a-d movies always make me cry

He said he had to work so I went to the show alone
They turned down the lights and turned the projector on
And just as the news of the world started to begin
I saw my darlin' and my best friend walk in

Though I was sittin' there they didn't see
And so they sat right down in front of me
When he kissed her lips I almost died
And in the middle of the color cartoon I started to cry.

Oh-oh-oh sa-a-a-d movies always make me cry
Oh-oh-oh sa-a-a-d movies always make me cry

And so I got up and slowly walked on home
And mama saw the tears and said "what's wrong?"
And so to keep from telling her a lie
I just said "sa-a-a-d movies make me cry"

Oh-oh-oh sa-a-a-d movies always make me cry
Oh-oh-oh sa-a-a-d movies always make me cry

"Long Ride Home"

Long black limousine
Shiniest car I've ever seen
The back seat is nice and clean
She rides as quiet as a dream
Someone dug a hole six long feet in the ground
I said goodbye to you and I threw my roses down
Ain't nothing left at all in the end of being proud
With me riding in this car, and you flying through the clouds

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun sink like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long ride home

One day I took your tiny hand
Put your finger in the wedding band
Your daddy gave a piece of land
We laid ourselves the best of plans
Forty years go by with someone laying in your bed
Forty years of things you say you wish you'd never said
How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead
I wonder as I stare up at the sky turning red

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun sink like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long ride home

Headlights staring at the driveway
The house is dark as it can be
I go inside and all is silent
It seems as empty as the inside of me

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun sink like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long, on the long
Oh the long, on the long
On the long ride home

Rose Royce, who did Car Wash, also did a couple of good ballads, one of them covered by Madonna. You can do a youtube search and find quite a few hits, I provided some links:

Rose Royce - wishing on a star:

Roce Royce - love don't live here anymore (also covered by Madonna)

original version:

Madonna video version. There's also one from the Like a Virgin album, but neither are as good as the Rose Royce versions:

Dreaming comes so easily
'cause it's all that I've known
True love is a fairy tale
I'm damaged, so how would i know

I'm scared and I'm alone
I'm ashamed
And i need for you to know

I didn't say all the things that i wanted to say
And you can't take back what you've taken away
'cause i feel you, i feel you near me

I didn't say all the things that i wanted to say

And you can't take back what you've taken away
'cause i feel you, i feel you near me

Healing comes so painfully
And it chills to the bone
Will anyone get close to me?
I'm damaged, as I'm sure you know

There's mending for my soul
An ending to this fear
Forgiveness for a man who was stronger
I was just a little girl, but i can't go back

I saw her standing there with a doo-dad in her hair (I don't know the writer(s) nor the performer(s))

I saw her standing there
with a doo-dad in her hair
and I guess she didn't care
so much for me.
For she said that she was wed,
and I wish that I was dead.
But the chances are I'll live 'til 93.

Always brings a tear to my eye.

Song That Can You Cry

The odd thing about sad songs is that they can be happy songs as well. That song that meant everything good with the old girlfriend can make you cry with the opening notes today.
Sometimes that sad song can indicate an upcoming hope, or desire to to climb out of that sad situation. I've always believed that without the sad stuff, we'd never appreciate the good stuff.
Everything ever created by man has been made so by some driven need he didn't have.
Or, to impress a girl.
It's always about something that he doesn't have, and has to work to achieve. Sad songs are the stuff that fuel our dreams to become reality.

Personally, I don't cry because of songs. For me, it's movies. Specifically Christmas movies. I've cried at the end of every version of "A Christmas Carol" I ever saw, including Bill Murray's "Scrooged".
And, <snif> The Nightmare Before Christmas.
<ulp> Yeah, even 2003's Elf.

* note for the ladies - If you didn't feel "included" with the above, please understand that it was in no way meant to be sexist. Feel free to exchange all masculine refrences above to the feminine equivilent. (boy=girl, etc).
Also, I'd like my non-Christian friends and visitors to know that my personal teariness about Christmas movies ("Holiday movies", as you call them) is not to be taken as any attack or affront to your personal faith or religion, or lack thereof.

Beach Boys - Warmth of the Sun

A song about Carl's Irish Setter - Shannon.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70psCljGnXM

What good is the dawn
That grows into day
The sunset at night
Or living this way

For I have the warmth of the sun
(Warmth of the sun)
Within me at night
(Within me at night)

The love of my life
She left me one day
I cried when she said
"I don't feel the same way"
As she swam out to sea

Still I have the warmth of the sun
(Warmth of the sun)
Within me tonight
(Within me tonight)

I'll dream of her paws
And though they're not real
It's like she's still there
The way that I feel

My love's like the warmth of the sun
(Warmth of the sun)
It won't ever die
(It won't ever die)

It's kind of old fashioned, but "I won't send roses" from the musical Mack and Mabel always makes me tear up a little:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuFIzHifuu4&feature=related

I won't send roses
Or hold the door
I won't remember
Which dress you wore

My heart is too much in control
The lack of romance in my soul
Will turn you grey, kid
So stay away, kid

Forget my shoulder
When you're in need
Forgetting birthdays
Is guaranteed

And should I love you, you would be
The last to know
I won't send roses
And roses suit you so
