What is the ppm concentration of an aqueous solution with 0.0050% Ag+ ions?

In summary, to calculate the ppm concentration of a solution with 0.0050% Ag+ ions, we first need to convert the percentage to grams. Assuming 1 L of solution, the mass would be 0.00005g. Then, using the conversion factor 1mg/1L, we can calculate the ppm concentration to be 0.00000005 ppm. However, the notation and steps used by the original poster are unclear and need further explanation.

Homework Statement

An aqueous solution is found to be 0.0050% Ag+ ions. Calculate the ppm concentration of the solution.

Homework Equations

1mg / 1 L

The Attempt at a Solution

0.0050%/100 = 0.00005g
Assuming there is 1 L of solution

.00005g *(1/1000)

0.00000005 mg/L

1mg/L = 1 ppm

0.00000005 ppm

Hi brycenrg:

I don't understand your attempt at a solution. Can you explain the steps?

I also don't understand the notation: 0.0050% Ag% ions. What do the percent signs mean?

The percent is the amount of Ag ions of the whole solution, pretty sure

Doesn't make much sense to me. Where did the g come from? Is it 0.00005g in 1 L, in 100 L, in any volume?

You are right about assuming 1 L of a solution. What would be its approximate mass?

FAQ: What is the ppm concentration of an aqueous solution with 0.0050% Ag+ ions?

What is ppm concentration?

Ppm concentration, also known as parts per million concentration, is a unit of measurement for the amount of a particular substance in a solution. It represents the number of units of a substance per million units of the solution.

How is ppm concentration calculated?

Ppm concentration is calculated by dividing the mass of the solute (in grams) by the total mass of the solution (in grams) and then multiplying by 1 million. The formula is: ppm = (mass of solute / mass of solution) * 1,000,000.

Why is ppm concentration used?

Ppm concentration is used because it allows for precise measurements of small amounts of substances in a solution. It is commonly used in industries such as agriculture, environmental science, and water treatment to measure the concentration of various chemicals and pollutants.

What is a safe ppm concentration for drinking water?

The safe ppm concentration for drinking water varies depending on the substance being measured. In general, the EPA sets a maximum contaminant level of 10 ppm for most substances, but some substances, such as lead, have a much lower safe limit of 15 parts per billion (ppb).

How can ppm concentration be converted to other units of concentration?

Ppm concentration can be converted to other units of concentration, such as molarity or percent concentration, by using conversion factors and the molecular weight of the solute. It is important to note that different units of concentration measure different properties of a solution, so the conversion may not always be straightforward.
