Which knowledge are rules of thumb: Factual knowledge or heuristic?

In summary, there is confusion about which term, heuristic knowledge or factual knowledge, should be referred to as a "rule of thumb" in the context of an expert system architecture/block diagram. Both terms are vague and the slides may be using one to clarify the other. A better description of a "rule of thumb" would be something that is not always true but is true often enough for practical use. Ultimately, it is determined that heuristic knowledge is the appropriate term.

really confused at this. which is rule of thumb? some slides say heuristic is rule of thumb whereas others say factual knowledge is rule of thumb. the context of this is architecture/block diagram of expert system.
i think heuristic knowledge should be called rule of thumb. but i am not sure.

How is an answer to your question useful ? It's not as if there is an impenetrable barrier between these categories. In addition, both are language, which almost by definition makes them vague.

What's your confusion ?

All those terms are vague. The slides you mention are using one vague term to try to clarify another vague term. IMO, a better description is that a "rule of thumb" is something that is not always true but is true often enough to use it for reasonable guidance.

so heuristic it is.

FAQ: Which knowledge are rules of thumb: Factual knowledge or heuristic?

1. What is the difference between factual knowledge and heuristic?

Factual knowledge refers to information that is based on facts and evidence. It is acquired through observation, research, and experience. On the other hand, heuristic refers to a mental shortcut or rule of thumb that is used to make decisions and solve problems quickly.

2. Which type of knowledge is more reliable: factual or heuristic?

Factual knowledge is generally considered more reliable because it is based on concrete evidence and can be verified. Heuristics, on the other hand, are based on generalizations and may not always lead to accurate conclusions.

3. Can factual knowledge and heuristic be used together?

Yes, factual knowledge and heuristic can be used together. In fact, many times heuristic is used to fill in gaps in our factual knowledge and help us make decisions in situations where we do not have all the information.

4. Are there any downsides to relying on heuristics?

Yes, there are some downsides to relying solely on heuristics. Heuristics can sometimes lead to biases and errors in judgment, especially when used in complex situations. It is important to use heuristics in combination with factual knowledge to make well-informed decisions.

5. How can we determine when to use factual knowledge and when to use heuristics?

The decision to use factual knowledge or heuristic depends on the situation at hand. If there is enough information available and time to analyze it, factual knowledge should be used. However, if the situation is time-sensitive or there is limited information, heuristic can be used as a quick decision-making tool.
