Astrophysics is a science that employs the methods and principles of physics in the study of astronomical objects and phenomena. Among the subjects studied are the Sun, other stars, galaxies, extrasolar planets, the interstellar medium and the cosmic microwave background. Emissions from these objects are examined across all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, and the properties examined include luminosity, density, temperature, and chemical composition. Because astrophysics is a very broad subject, astrophysicists apply concepts and methods from many disciplines of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, relativity, nuclear and particle physics, and atomic and molecular physics.
In practice, modern astronomical research often involves a substantial amount of work in the realms of theoretical and observational physics. Some areas of study for astrophysicists include their attempts to determine the properties of dark matter, dark energy, black holes, and other celestial bodies; and the origin and ultimate fate of the universe. Topics also studied by theoretical astrophysicists include Solar System formation and evolution; stellar dynamics and evolution; galaxy formation and evolution; magnetohydrodynamics; large-scale structure of matter in the universe; origin of cosmic rays; general relativity, special relativity, quantum and physical cosmology, including string cosmology and astroparticle physics.
You know, there are many things in astrophysics, that i do not understand
For example, this thing of the Hubble distance. At distances that exceed the Hubble distance the universe is expanding with velocities that are bigger then the speed of light. Suppose that in this region a...
Show that 1600 light years is equal to a distance of 1.5x10exp19 ?

The black Hole was detected because of its effects on its neighbouring star. why do astromers have to rely on indirect evidence for looking at stars?
A star has a a radius of...
Question:
Assuming a flat universe, find the angular size of the largest causally connected region of the CBR. Hint: We see this region as it existed at the time of decoupling, when the CBR photons were set free.

Question:
What temperature would be required for two protons to collide if quantum mechanical tunneling is neglected? Assume that nuclei having velocities ten times the root mean square (rms) value for the Maxwell-Boltzmann...
Hi,
I'm interested in learning just how scientific research is done—specifically for Astrophysics. I would like to start some preliminary research for the Siemens-Westinghouse competition in October, but I'm wondering if research can be done in Astrophysics without a multi-billion dollar...
Hello everyone,
I am searching for a whole course on undergraduate Astrophysics which cover some topics like: formation of stars/accretion disk/hertzsprung russel diagram/ energy transport and generation in stars etc..
I have been searching only to coming up with some course either very...
Hi all,
I'm looking for some suggestions for a few problems I'm working on.
1. A very simple problem with a comet of orbital period 100 years and perihelion distance from the center of the Sun that is twice the distance of the solar radius. Now, I was looking for the velocity of the comet...
I was wonderiong what actually this field is, is it Astronomy with more math and physics? Or is it relevant to the Big Bang and Quantum physics?
Just wondering
Hi I am just in my first yr doing a physical & life sciences degree, Its a 3 yr course for ordinary degree & 4 yrs for honours degree, but in the second year I have to choose in which direction I am heading in, ie for physics, Chemistry, or Biology.
Im choosing physics & then after this...
How would I got about learning the mathematics side of Astrophysics. What would someone have to know? And are there good sites that teach you, or introduce you well?
Hello all -
I was wondering if anyone knew of any GOOD colleges that offered all or at least part of a Bachelor's degree in Astrophysics via distance learning. I'll be transferring to a sea duty here, and could just wait to go straight to college, but I'd like to get at least something done...
Here is the problem...
Consider a row of isotropically emitting streetlamps 15m apart. On a foggy light, an observer standing next to the 1st light notes the radiation flux from the 2nd light is 5.0 times that of the 3rd. The last streetlamp definitely seen is the 12th.
If the air+fog...
For an astrophysics major, would it be beneficial to take on math as a minor? Also, are there any other minors that would be good for an astrophysics major?
ATM I'm at a JC and I will be transferring next year under the astrophysics major. Anybody have any inside information or anything about schools in california. Also keep in mind, caltech doesn't really take transfer students...but hey, there is always grad school. :)
Hi, I am currently a second year BSc student in South Africa doing physics, chem and math. I've always been interested in space and I am considering going into astrophysics as an career option. I'm just unsure whether there is a demand for astrophysicists around and what the future of...

Hey,
I'm a 2nd year student @ warwick university (UK) currently studying a masters in physics. I eventually plan on studying for a PhD in the states in Astrophysics..
Not many people seem to know around here so I thought I'd give this forum a shot.. Which schools in the US are well known...
Looking at the astro-ph section of the preprint arxiv the last few days I was struck by two things: there ws a fresh flood of papers every day, and nearly every paper had multiple authors. Thinking about how long it takes to produce a paper, that's an awful lot of (presumably funded) work for...
Hi,
I am an undergrauate in physics right now, and I am trying to figure out where I want to focus my attention when I go into grad school. I have always been really intrigued by space/astronomy and figured astrophysics would be a natural progression of that.
At my university there happens...
At school we have been given a very important research assignment, but my team-mates (we work in groups) and I don't have a subject to research on. Does anyone have any ideas? My team-mates and I would really appreciate it. We were thinking about researching something on rocketfuel (or just...
Hello everyone,
Since I haven't seen any introductions section here (like the one mkaku.org has) I was hoping that members could introduce themeselves in this thread so everyone can get to know each other better, especially new members like myself.
Let me introduce myself first,
My name...
