The civil service is a collective term for a sector of government composed mainly of career civil servants hired on professional merit rather than appointed or elected, whose institutional tenure typically survives transitions of political leadership. A civil servant is a person employed in the public sector by a government department or agency or public sector undertakings. Civil servants work for central government and state governments, and answer to the government, not a political party. The extent of civil servants of a state as part of the "civil service" varies from country to country. In the United Kingdom, for instance, only Crown (national government) employees are referred to as civil servants whereas employees of Local Authorities (counties, cities and similar administrations) are generally referred to as "local government civil service officers" who are public servants but not civil servants. A civil servant is a public servant but a public servant is not necessarily a civil servant.
The study of the civil service is a part of the field of public service. Staff members in "non-departmental public bodies" (sometimes called "QUANGOs") may also be classed as civil servants for the purpose of statistics and possibly for their terms and conditions. Collectively a state's civil servants form its civil service or public service. The concept arose in China and modern civil service developed in Britain in the 18th century.
An international civil servant or international staff member is a civilian employee who is employed by an intergovernmental organization. These international civil servants do not resort under any national legislation (from which they have immunity of jurisdiction) but are governed by internal staff regulations. All disputes related to international civil service are brought before special tribunals created by these international organizations such as, for instance, the Administrative Tribunal of the ILO. Specific referral can be made to the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) of the United Nations, an independent expert body established by the United Nations General Assembly. Its mandate is to regulate and coordinate the conditions of service of staff in the United Nations common system, while promoting and maintaining high standards in the international civil service.
Hi,
I am designing a beam to replace a load bearing wall.
I have produced 2 separate UDL diagrams which, one for floor load and one for wall load. I am trying to find shear force and bending moment as in one for the total of the two diagrams. I know how to do it if the loads are spread...

Hello,
I am a first year Civil Engineering student.
I am not sure if I want to continue Civil or switch to Mechanical. I like them equally, both have their pros and cons. My current university offers a 5 year (150 credits) BEng program in Civil and Mechanical , another local university...
I would like some feedback as to whether or not it would be worthwhile to obtain a masters degree in Civil Engineering. My current situation may (or may not) be unique.
I graduated in 2005 with a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, I obtained my E.I.T., and after about...
I'm sure these two have been compared before, but I'm wondering if anyone could grant me insight on what the Mechanical Engineering/Civil Engineering industry is like. I know Mechanical Engineering is much more broad, but how is the work on a day to day basis? What is the work on a day to day...
I recently graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Physics and want to attain the credentials necessary to qualify to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. I am wondering what the best course of action would be. Do you basically need either an ABET undergraduate degree or masters degree in...

Civil Engineering is the easiest Engineering discipline??
I always hear people say this and i actually slightly believe on it, I think Civil Engineering is easier because everything on it can be seen physically like bridges, dams, highways, i mean compared to electricity you need a higher level...

Hello there! I’m still a high school student. My classmates and I were talking about what we course we’ll take for college. Most of my classmates want to become electronics and communications engineers but I think it’d be cool if I become a civil engineer. When I told them that I want to become...
One advice I received on choosing a major is pick what you are good at and what you like while keep in mind what future career you might have. Even though I was just accepted into the EE department after my freshman year, I am still unsure if I really want to do EE.
Would someone please give...
What university is best for civil Engineering? Carleton university or university of Ottawa?
I have also been accepted to Co-op at both universities. So which one has a better Co-op program?
Hey guys,
I currently in my second year of Bachelors in Civil, however i am contemplating on switching to mechanical. The reasons for this, is that i am wanting a degree that can lead me to a career where i can be involved in the design, development and integration of technology that have...
I really like physics and civil engineering. I want to both do research in physics and work and design in civil engineering. I eventually want to be a professor in either one. Can anyone give me some advice choosing majors. Should I be a double major, or do a minor? Should I get a bachelor's in...
I have a question I really would be thankful if I had some help
For the mix design in the fresh concrete.. I've got the compressive strength 6525 psi, I didn't find it in any table to find the w/c (water-cement ratio), what should I do and if there is a formula for it what it is?
I need suggestions of any research topics related to civil engineering for a bachelor level. My current fields of interest include Surveying/transportation, geotechnical engineering and construction materials and testing. Our title defense will take place on Thursday so I'm a bit on a hurry...
I have a BSc in physics and I want to get into civil engineering. I'm in Canada, and to get professional engineering licence, you have to get an engineering undergrad degree.

So I'm interested in Environmental Engineering. I am a sophomore, and as of now, I'm interested in green buildings and possibly water resources. But really, I enjoy all things sustainability, and I would also go as far to say that I enjoy designing anything (whether its environmental-related or...
what is difference in these two things..
as i know both are realated to building construction>>but
An architect is more concerned about beauty but civil engineer is give more emphasis on construction.
am i correct?
Hey guys,I was wondering if a Masters in Engineering Physics degree would come in handy after a bachelors in Civil Engineering.

Hi All,
I got this tute question that I need help with.
I need to determine the thickness of a roadbase (can be anything from crushed concrete or crushed sandstone) on top of sand to withhold a 7tonne rig (350kpa).
Any help would be most appreciated.
Thank you!
Title says it, I was discussing this today with my buddy in physics lecture today. We just moved onto kinetic energy and universal gravitation and they seem to do the same thing a lot better and more efficient.
As a civil engineering major, when will I ever use vectors in my line of work?
