The civil service is a collective term for a sector of government composed mainly of career civil servants hired on professional merit rather than appointed or elected, whose institutional tenure typically survives transitions of political leadership. A civil servant is a person employed in the public sector by a government department or agency or public sector undertakings. Civil servants work for central government and state governments, and answer to the government, not a political party. The extent of civil servants of a state as part of the "civil service" varies from country to country. In the United Kingdom, for instance, only Crown (national government) employees are referred to as civil servants whereas employees of Local Authorities (counties, cities and similar administrations) are generally referred to as "local government civil service officers" who are public servants but not civil servants. A civil servant is a public servant but a public servant is not necessarily a civil servant.
The study of the civil service is a part of the field of public service. Staff members in "non-departmental public bodies" (sometimes called "QUANGOs") may also be classed as civil servants for the purpose of statistics and possibly for their terms and conditions. Collectively a state's civil servants form its civil service or public service. The concept arose in China and modern civil service developed in Britain in the 18th century.
An international civil servant or international staff member is a civilian employee who is employed by an intergovernmental organization. These international civil servants do not resort under any national legislation (from which they have immunity of jurisdiction) but are governed by internal staff regulations. All disputes related to international civil service are brought before special tribunals created by these international organizations such as, for instance, the Administrative Tribunal of the ILO. Specific referral can be made to the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) of the United Nations, an independent expert body established by the United Nations General Assembly. Its mandate is to regulate and coordinate the conditions of service of staff in the United Nations common system, while promoting and maintaining high standards in the international civil service.
Dear friends,
I am completing my bachelors in engineering in civil engineering this year. I always had a inclination towards physics from childhood but followed the most usual path of engineering due to family.
Now, my plan is to go into a field which is similar to physics or requires...

Hello!
So here is the deal. I went to a meeting on Industrial Experience job placement for engineering students where it's kind of like a co-op, they help you find internships in your field for summer work.
Anyways I know there is no way I can get in this year because one of the...
I am a 2nd year/3 in Civil Engineering Technology (3 yr. advanced diploma) at Fanshawe College and I am looking to continue into the Civil Engineering Bachelor of Eng. at Lakehead University, jumping right in the 3rd of 4 years. I would just like some advice from somebody who has done something...

All advice is appreciated.
Hello I am wondering what is the better one to go into. This upcoming year I will be going into first year engineering, then the second year we must choose our specialty., Right now I am thinking about civil and mechanical. I don't like the ideas behind electrical nor am I interested in it.

Hi everyone,
I am a 2nd year transfer student with about a 3.8+ gpa. My situation is special b/c I already have a bachelor's and it's tough to transfer to top schools for 2nd BS. I like math and physics and I want to be a renaissance man of sorts, but for employment I think that design and...
There are quite a few canalised streams in my area and I was watching one riparian owner's contractor rebuilding his stream retaining walls.

Hi everybody,
I'm in somewhat of a career conundrum. I'm 24, I've graduated from the University of Maryland in May of 2010 with a BS in Civil Engineering. I've been working for the past year for a fairly prestigious engineering firm, and while I do like my work, I've come to decide over the...
Hi guys, I am a 1st year student in civil engineering, I must admit that I like my field program,
the thing is that some people are good at a certain thing, others struggle with it.

What, another Libya thread? Well... Libya seems that it's going to be very separate from the rest of the uprisings/revolts/change in the Middle East, and it's singular in its approach.
