The compound 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (also called o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile; chemical formula: C10H5ClN2), a cyanocarbon, is the defining component of tear gas commonly referred to as CS gas, which is used as a riot control agent. Exposure causes a burning sensation and tearing of the eyes to the extent that the subject cannot keep their eyes open, and a burning irritation of the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth and throat, resulting in profuse coughing, nasal mucus discharge, disorientation, and difficulty breathing, partially incapacitating the subject. CS gas is an aerosol of a volatile solvent (a substance that dissolves other active substances and that easily evaporates) and 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile, which is a solid compound at room temperature. CS gas is generally accepted as being non-lethal. It was first synthesized by two Americans, Ben Corson and Roger Stoughton, at Middlebury College in 1928, and the chemical's name is derived from the first letters of the scientists' surnames.CS was developed and tested secretly at Porton Down in Wiltshire, UK, in the 1950s and 1960s. CS was used first on animals, then subsequently on British Army servicemen volunteers. CS has less effect on animals due to "under-developed tear-ducts and protection by fur".

Dear Physics Forum personnel,
I am an undergraduate pursuing a major in the mathematics. My current undergraduate project in the computational virology really got me interested in the worlds of microbiology. The project involves both the biology and computer science, which is specifically...
Hi.
I'm finishing my Physics Bachelor this year, and it looks like I'm going to end up with a quite mediocre GPA, around 2.8 or a bit lower (actually a 7 over 10, I'm Spanish). I don't think I will have many problems getting into the Master (which I think you would call grad school) I'm...
Hey guys,
I was wondering if someone here could help me answer some questions, and if not at least give me some advice.
I'm double majoring in CS and Math. I want to pursue graduate degree in the future after I finish my bachelor. The thing is, I have so much love for math and theoretical...
I am in calc2 now and I just can't get excited about this series stuff. We went over many methods of testing for convergence/divergence and finally moved on to polar coordinates. Is series important in any type of CS field besides, I would imagine, creating software to solve series problems?
Hello everyone. Currently I am studying for BSc. Physics in Leipzig, Germany and serious considering to change into some other fields for master. Now I am considering three possibilities: Master of engineering, computer science or applied mathematics.
I have searched quite many information...
I am currently getting a bachelors in civil engineering. How useful would it be for me to do a minor in computer science? If it matters, I am a junior and am hoping to go to graduate school. I don't know for sure which area of CE I want to go Into but I'm leaning towards environmental...
Hi I am a Computer Engineer, with 8 yrs of experience and i love physics and mathematics. I love my Job And really like computer science. But i also like Physics. I don't want to make a career in Physics or change my career, but i want to continue my physics education. Any suggestions ?
Hi guys,
I am currently enrolled in the second year of a computer science engineering course. Over the last couple of years, I have become a fortunate prisoner to mathematical fascination.
I was always good at Maths but the schools I went to did not encourage much creativity and the teachers...
CS Lewis didn't really get the gravity thing. In a spaceship the astronauts are attracted to the center of the ship, enough so that they seem to have fairly normal gravity. When they get close to a planet this is screwed up and they have a hard time keeping their balance.
The hero at first...
Purpose:
Seeking general advice! "What would you do in my shoes?"
My situation:
All of my undergraduate research (and passion) has been related to computational projects-- Monte Carlo simulations, data analysis, and more recently image analysis (all in Python). My summers have gone into this...
I really should have titled this thread, "Burnt Out on Math, Need Advice on New Direction" but I don't know how to edit it.
Hello, I am currently majoring in Mathematics and am considering changing my major to Computer Science because, quite frankly, I am getting burnt out on Math and don't...
Hello,
Okay, so I'm completing my transfer degree at a community college here pretty soon, and then will be going to a big university after that. I have three main topics of interest, those being, Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science. These have been my interests for years and...
I am currently junior in high school and I am thinking about double major in physics and computer science. But there are some generals questions that I don't really understand.
As far as I understand for each major you have classes that you have to take. If the classes overlap then you just...
I'm hoping to work in an Astronomy-related field. My dream would be NASA, but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm currently working on my Electrical Engineering BS.
What would the best double major be to compliment my end goals, Computer Science or Physics?
Thank you!
Im debating between two options.
Background:
I started out as ME and then transferred early to EE. Currently I'm 1/3 of the way to an EE bachelor and a few CS classes deep. First I was thinking of doing a CS minor with my EE major (5 years), but then I realized that with an extra year of...
Hey, there.
I am reading this forum for close to a year and it seems to have knowlagable people.
I am in a little academic crisis right now. I'll start by saying I was enrolled in a CS/Physics double major. I actually started University 7 years ago, and returned just now, at age 26. I was...
So I have a problem where I'm given the decay rate of a sample which contains Cs137, 10 mCi, and I'm basically given the percentage of radiation detected by the detector. But the wording of the question is:
"What count rate would be observed in a perfectly efficient gamma detector"
Sounds to...
Hello folks,
I know there are lots of threads like this in this forum. I've read some of them and could get some good information. However, each case is a different one, and that is why I've decided to Sign Up and ask a question (also I want to participate more on the forum, not only reading...

Could a Bachelors in CS easily translate to a government job? I have a dream of working for the government, and was wondering how easy it would be to get a job with DoD or NSA with a CS degree. I'm assuming the NSA has the largest amount of CS jobs.
Also, would it be beneficial to attend...

Hello PF :)
I am a physics-major-wannabe who wishes to increase his employability by supplementing my degree with computer science courses. I have already taken Python and C and will most likely take C++ with Unix next semester. I have a room for two more elective courses, but as a non-CS...
One day I aspire to work in the space exploration(or something similar) field using Computer Science skills, and my knowledge in Astronomy. Is this realistic? Or would a minor in Physics be better for trying to achieve the same goal?
I plan to attend the University of Utah if the makes a...
I don´t continue the other threads because I can´t post a new thread in them. It is a very basic question. The strand model deduce GR, quantum physics ( Dirac Equation), thermodynamics, but it must deduce really QFT with GR incorporated, not the separate theories. The final theory must be a QFT...
Hi. I'm a math major and I am considering either a CS minor or a stats minor.
The question I have is how useful a CS minor would be, especially in careers outside of software development. I would have to stay an extra semester for a stats minor, but I see a stats minor as more applicable...
Hi. I'm currently a math major and I need to choose a concentration (CS or stats).
I've already taken MATLAB and currently taking C++. I've noticed that upper-level courses are not about programming but are about machine learning, algorithms, cryptography, etc.
I think I am capable at...
