Has anyone had any experience with a graduate E&M class that didn't use Jackson? Is Jackson necessary? I have it at home and it's a very difficult read and the problems are impossible. I have other E&M books and I can actually learn E&M from them.
My grad E&M class (master's program)...
Hello All,
I am in search for a company to buy lab supplies from and am looking for any recommendations. I need to buy tweezers, dishes and other supplies. I work in a clean room mostly with small 1cm x 1cm chips, sometimes with full wafers.
I did some google searches only to be...
So, the time has come that grad school decisions are coming in. Anybody received any acceptances yet?
I have applied to 8 schools for a master's in math and have gotten accepted to two - Miami University of Ohio and Bowling Green State University.
Hey everyone, apologies if this has been asked before.
Basically I'm an ex-Computer Science student (I left for two reasons, the first was that I was tired of all the people in the course that just wanted a degree and didn't want to put in extra effort to make the program really top-notch...
Is it possible to apply for graduate studies in other specialization that under-graduate studies were passed?
After obtaining bachelor of physics i may want to go on mathematics graduate studies - is this possible?
I'm asking about EU countries, mostly about UK.
This may have been better to ask before I finished my grad school applications, but I think it will still be useful..
As an undergrad all my research experience has been theoretical/computational related to applied physics, materials, energy..., but in my applications I indicated reasons for...
I'm currently an undergraduate and was wondering what options are out there for graduate school. I have a 3.7 GPA (in math/science/computer science courses) and have done numerous research projects with my advisor in theoretical astrophysics (two minor publications). I have also attended two...
I just graduated with my BS in physics and applied math this December 2009. I'm currently taking 2 mechanical engineering classes right now through my school's extension program for BA/BS degree holders. After taking these ME classes for 3 weeks now, I'm certain that I want to enter ME for my...
As a high school senior who hopes to pursue a career in physics, I am learning more about how I want to continue my education every day. Originally, I had hoped to get in the very highest ranked universities (with respect to the physical sciences) as an undergraduate, but I've come to realize...

It may be tough to speak for such a thing, but does anyone know what the profile of students who get the chance to attend the likes of great math schools like Chicago, Michigan, Princeton, Harvard, and so on actually are like on average? Is a significant factor the fact they were able to learn...
This is a two parter, feel free to respond to one, two or no parts:
1)I'll be taking a grad level sequence in mathematical logic and possibly another in analysis with measure theory. I also have taken a couple independent studies in algebraic geometry ( my university does not normally offer...

What are some U.S. & European Universities that have a good graduate program for studying Plasma Physics? I am specifically interested in application to fusion.
I know Princeton has the plasma laboratory, but that might be too competitive for me.
Hello all... First, let me say that I am currently a graduate student in mathematics who would like to change graduate programs to something involving geology. I've always been fascinated with the internal Earth and how it behaves. To me, this seems like a big jump. My questions are the...
I've recently finished applying to a few doctoral programs in chemistry for next fall, but I am now thinking that maybe I should have looked into chemical engineering instead. I'm just getting a feeling that chemical engineering would be a bit more interesting and that there might be more job...
Realistically speaking, what league of schools does a hardworking, smart but not brilliant math major have a shot at for a PhD in pure math? Let's say I might apply with 8 graduate courses at a "lower Ivy", coauthored 1-2 papers, solid recommendations.
I am not getting my hopes up for Stanford...
I am an international student and I need some advice regarding applying to phd program in expt HEP. The following are my scores:

I'm a 1st semester sophomore math major right now and I'm taking an Intro Topology course this semester. It ended up being harder than I expected it to be and I'm fairly certain that I will end up with a B/B+ (most likely a B+) in the course due to one bad exam. How bad will this look when I'm...
I've always wondered, do graduate schools really admit students from other disciplines by having them take defiency courses? or do they just say that as a "formality"?
I still got a few years to decide, but I've been looking for schools that offer Graduate Degrees pertaining to Computer Security. I'm currently working on my undergrad degree in Computer Science.
Any Suggestions?
Hi, all. I'm currently in a graduate program in philosophy and simultaneously doing work in mathematics. Since I've not experienced advanced math until now, I have no way to judge how realistic my projected course loads will be. Any input would be useful.
A little about my situation. I'm...
Hi all,

Im planning on applying to math graduate school and taking the GRE subject test for math this weekend. However I don't think I am going to do well, but the small glimmer of hope that I have is that the schools I am applying to, either don't require it at all or "strongly recommend" it, so I am...

I have a couple of questions about graduate school:

Hi Folks
J. D. Jackson's last edition to his Classical Electrodynamics (3rd edition) was ten years ago. Are most graduate physics programs still using his text? It appears that some programs maybe using Schwinger's book. What other graduate level texts are in use?
Thank you
