The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States and Canada and few in other countries. The GRE is owned and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The test was established in 1936 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.According to ETS, the GRE aims to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills that have been acquired over a long period of learning. The content of the GRE consists of certain specific algebra, geometry, arithmetic, and vocabulary sections. The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-based exam administered at testing centers and institution owned or authorized by Prometric. In the graduate school admissions process, the level of emphasis that is placed upon GRE scores varies widely between schools and departments within schools. The importance of a GRE score can range from being a mere admission formality to an important selection factor.
The GRE was significantly overhauled in August 2011, resulting in an exam that is not adaptive on a question-by-question basis, but rather by section, so that the performance on the first verbal and math sections determines the difficulty of the second sections presented. Overall, the test retained the sections and many of the question types from its predecessor, but the scoring scale was changed to a 130 to 170 scale (from a 200 to 800 scale). The cost to take the test is US$205, although ETS will reduce the fee under certain circumstances. It also provides financial aid to those GRE applicants who prove economic hardship. ETS does not release scores that are older than five years, although graduate program policies on the acceptance of scores older than five years will vary.
I am most likely going to take the GRE Math Subject exam in April '07, and so I am wondering about how I should prepare for the exam. For those that have taken the exam, how would you prepare if you were to take the exam again? Do you think tutoring math (mostly calculus) would be a great way...
First up, thin noncunducting ring with uniformly distributed charge Q on it, what's the potential a distance x from it, it's located on the axis of symmetry(ie on the axis passing through the center of the ring)
I really really really thought you could treat that ring as a point charge but...
This is a GRE question.
A classical model of a diatomic molecule is a springy dumbbell, where the dumbbell is free to rotate about axes perpendicular to the spring. In the limit of high temperature. what is the specific heat per mole at constant volume?

So, I'm a senior undergrad in Mechanical Engineering at WVU and I'm going to grad school (not at WVU). The original plan was to study for the GRE over the summer and take it at the beginning of the fall. Didn't happen. I had a few other plans later that also failed. Now I really got to study for...
Is anyone out there also using (or has used) the REA book to prepare for the physics GRE. I keep finding what I think are errors and it would be nice if someone could verify they are finding the same mistakes. Also, in general, how useful did you find this book and what other preparations do you...
Are the GRE books and aids worth it for a poor starving math major? I’ve heard they don’t help at all and they are the best thing ever from various people.
It's time for me to start studying for those dastardly standardized exams and I had a couple of questions.
1) Scoring: Does the GRE take away points for wrong answers?
2) When should I take it: I was told that most students take it April of their junior year and a second time October of...
Hello friends...
Hello everyone,

I'm near the end of my third year, and I'm going to apply for grad school in the summer. There are a couple of things I need to know:
1. Assuming school X wants me to take these tests, and given that I'm going to apply in the summer for enrollment Winter (or Automn) 2007, when do I need to...
In the complex plane, let C be the circle |z| = 2 with positive (counterclockwise) orientation. Show that:
\int _C \frac{dz}{(z-1)(z+3)^2} = \frac{\pi i}{8}
This isn't homework, it was a problem in one of the practice GREs. It looks like a straightforward application of the residue...
GRE Change?
I have been hearing that the GRE will be undergoing changes in it's format and syllabus. I tried searching on gre.org but i couldn't get any specifics. Does anyone have the details??
EDIT: I'm referring to the General GRE
Hello, I'm preparing for the GRE Math Subject Test, as such, I am using ETS's free practice book which can be downloaded from the gre.com website. The answers are given for the questions, but the solutions are not. I am having difficulty getting the solutions to the following questions. Help and...
Hi,
I am going to be taking the physics GRE in April and i was wondering if there is a good website I can go to or a forum for discussion of such things. Thank You
Preston
I need someone to be honest with me. I just got back from taking the GRE and I got a 410/610 for verbal/quantiative. I have 3.79 gpa with a double major in EE & physics with some research experience. But I want to get into cornell or MIT. Do I definitely need to retake? I hate these stupid...
Does anyone know of a publication that gives statistics such as avg. gre scores and gpa's for those who were accepted to math graduate programs?
For ex. Avg. gpa of applicants accepted for Berkely was 3.7
I've tried using peterson's guide but it only gives % accepted to the school...
I have a bunch of questions regarding the GRE Physics test. If you have answers to any of these questions or any general advice for taking the test, please chip in with your ideas.
1. How is the computerized test different from the paper test ? Specifically, do you get to know your score...
check this out: http://www.gre.org/grechanges.html
so... it might be a good idea to wait until the changes are implemented, if possible, unless you want to be inundated with words that no one will ever know or use!
i hope that kaplan is quick with its guides! :-p

I was just informed that the school I was considering for graduate school (really my only option) does not require a GRE. Given that I'm going back to school after 10 years of absence from the field, do I really need to take the GRE? It would make my life a lot easier if I just took some...
Hi, I know the physics GRE is a multiple choice exam so quick answers are essential. Does anyone know the level of math required to answer the questions? Thanks.
This question may seem a little premature, since I'm only an undergrad, but what should GRE scores be if I want to get into Cornell or some other Ivy league school? I don't know if this has any impact, but if I was accepted I intend to pursue a master's in mathematics.
What exactly is the GRE and when do you take it and what is it for?
Also, i know there's a test you take in doctorate program that advisors look at to determine who they want to 'take under their wing'. What is this test called? Thanks for the info.
Has anyone taken it in the last year or so? Has it gone to computer-based now? The reason I ask is I would MUCH prefer a paper based test. And if it is now computer based, like the general, where you can only do 1 problem at a time and not go back and forth, then I want to find study guides...
I consider myself premed, i.e. taking org chem, bio etc and only want to go to med school... but i'll be done with those prereqs at the end of this year, and i consider majoring in math. i.e. the last 2 years of undergrad i could do any major i want.
and i wanted to know what courses are...
Hello all,
Does anyone have any experience with admissions committee decisions regarding GRE scores? How much weight (over GPA or even research experience) do they carry on the admissions decision? (Physics General and/or General test)
I have very strong feelings against the GRE's. I find it...
Well, next Friday I'm going to take the GRE (General Record Examination) test. It is almost sure that I'm not going to have a high score, mainly due to the lack of specific american vocabulary. The verbal section is going me mad.
So that I want to know what does the GRE exactly mean:

i'll be writing my GRE next year, and i don't have any publication till date. I'm a student of iit bombay(Masters' course), cpi is >9 in 10. i don't have any clue what kind of GRE score (general as well as subjct GRE)ensures admission to top 20 universities if i mantian this cpi. for top 10...
I was in Borders the other day for something, and behind the counter I saw a book, GRE Exam 2005 (comes with cd rom). Does anyone know what that is?
It really got my attention and since they had one on the shelf I left with one. It looks like test preparation for some type of test.
