Mathematics (from Greek: μάθημα, máthēma, 'knowledge, study, learning') includes the study of such topics as quantity (number theory), structure (algebra), space (geometry), and change (analysis). It has no generally accepted definition.Mathematicians seek and use patterns to formulate new conjectures; they resolve the truth or falsity of such by mathematical proof. When mathematical structures are good models of real phenomena, mathematical reasoning can be used to provide insight or predictions about nature. Through the use of abstraction and logic, mathematics developed from counting, calculation, measurement, and the systematic study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. Practical mathematics has been a human activity from as far back as written records exist. The research required to solve mathematical problems can take years or even centuries of sustained inquiry.
Rigorous arguments first appeared in Greek mathematics, most notably in Euclid's Elements. Since the pioneering work of Giuseppe Peano (1858–1932), David Hilbert (1862–1943), and others on axiomatic systems in the late 19th century, it has become customary to view mathematical research as establishing truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. Mathematics developed at a relatively slow pace until the Renaissance, when mathematical innovations interacting with new scientific discoveries led to a rapid increase in the rate of mathematical discovery that has continued to the present day.Mathematics is essential in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, finance, and the social sciences. Applied mathematics has led to entirely new mathematical disciplines, such as statistics and game theory. Mathematicians engage in pure mathematics (mathematics for its own sake) without having any application in mind, but practical applications for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered later.
How do I take my mathematics to the "next level?"
Let me explain what I mean:
I am finishing my junior year in undergraduate. I consider myself "good" at math, in the sense that I make A's in my classes. But that's not enough.
I want to be a world class math student because my dream is to...
Does anybody know of online courses in mathematics. In particular I am looking for abstract algebra and real analysis or other proof based courses. I am aware of the various videos available, but I am looking for those courses in which one registers and attends online with assignments and...

I really like math and I want to major in it.
I want to hopefully get a masters in math. But I want to know what is it like?
Do any of you here have a masters or at least have an idea of the course?
I heard getting a masters is a lot of independent research.
How is that different from a...
So I was wondering what mathematics I will need under my belt before starting at a brand name graduate school(MIT, UChicago, UC Berkely, CalTech, Harcard, etc...) if I were going to specialize in particle or soft-matter physics.
Thank you!

Due to personal life issues and limitations, I've been seeking other options for my B.S. and came upon Applied Mathematics. What I've been on the fence about for a while now has been which Engineering degree to pursue be it Material Science, Mechanical, or Aerospace.

I'm trying to write down an axiomatic development of most of mathematics, and I'm wondering whether it's logically permissible to use natural numbers as subscripts before they have been defined in terms of the Peano Axioms.
For instance... the idea of function is used in the Peano axioms...
I decided to post a new thread for this. I saw the pinned thread about going into Engineering but my specific questions were not answered in that thread.

Hey guys,
I'm taking Discrete Mathematics and am having a bit of trouble with one of my proofs. If any of you has any experience with that and could tell me where I'm going wrong, I'd appreciate it!

When you solve an equation, how does it make you feel? Why do you open a book and solve every equation in it? After doing so what do you feel? I don't think solving maths problems can release adrenaline so how does it make you feel? Why do you guys continue to pursue maths?
Do you get comfort...
Bachelors In Mathematics and PhD In Physics

Hello, I am a senior in high school wondering if I should major in mathematics. I am developing a strong interest in the subject and am currently enjoying and doing well in my AB AP Calculus course. The problem, however, is that I have read in many places (such as on these fantastic forums) that...

Hello all
I am a new member here. I've found this forum today by chance.
