Real options valuation, also often termed real options analysis, (ROV or ROA) applies option valuation techniques to capital budgeting decisions. A real option itself, is the right—but not the obligation—to undertake certain business initiatives, such as deferring, abandoning, expanding, staging, or contracting a capital investment project. For example, real options valuation could examine the opportunity to invest in the expansion of a firm's factory and the alternative option to sell the factory.Real options are generally distinguished from conventional financial options in that they are not typically traded as securities, and do not usually involve decisions on an underlying asset that is traded as a financial security. A further distinction is that option holders here, i.e. management, can directly influence the value of the option's underlying project; whereas this is not a consideration as regards the underlying security of a financial option. Moreover, management cannot measure uncertainty in terms of volatility, and must instead rely on their perceptions of uncertainty. Unlike financial options, management also have to create or discover real options, and such creation and discovery process comprises an entrepreneurial or business task. Real options are most valuable when uncertainty is high; management has significant flexibility to change the course of the project in a favorable direction and is willing to exercise the options.Real options analysis, as a discipline, extends from its application in corporate finance, to decision making under uncertainty in general, adapting the techniques developed for financial options to "real-life" decisions. For example, R&D managers can use Real Options Valuation to help them deal with various uncertainties in making decisions about the allocation of resources among R&D projects. A non business example might be the decision to join the work force, or rather, to forgo several years of income to attend graduate school. It, thus, forces decision makers to be explicit about the assumptions underlying their projections, and for this reason ROV is increasingly employed as a tool in business strategy formulation. This extension of real options to real-world projects often requires customized decision support systems, because otherwise the complex compound real options will become too intractable to handle.
Hello Physicsforum community!
I want to go to college next year and for the moment these are my options:
My first option is BSc in Ecology & Environment and a MSc in Integrated approach to natural sciences. My second option that I am considering is BSc.Eng Engineering Physics. My question first...
I know, I know, it might be a little bit spam-y to post another poll, but since the option 'Other' was gaining so much attention, I decided to create a new poll with more options so that people could be more accurate in their description.
Since I support the MWI, I will post a few links with...
Dear Gentlemen, I am a fresh graduate mechanical engineer and I live in Bahrain (middle east) and usually, the positions required in the companies are limited. I want to ask you which of the given positions is preferred for a fresh Mechanical Engineer, most applicable for what I studied, because...
Good evening,
I am unsure as to whether or not I am posting this question in the apropraite section of the this forum and apologize if I am not. With that said I will let you in on the question that I have for you tonight.
I am currently a fourth year undergraduate student pursuing a...
Right now I'm in my junior year working on an accounting degree, but I'm finding this clearly isn't my passion. I'll still finish for the degree because I believe it has value, but I plan to also minor in math and then apply to a masters in math program.
I've had a lot of questions about the...
Is it common for international students to get to do summer physics REU's in the US? I am a 3rd year undergrad in Spain, although I am a legal resident of the US if that helps (no need for a visa or anything to that avail). I can get letters of recommendation from 2-3 professors one of which is...
Im a 2nd year EE student and lately I have been worrying about if i am in the right engineering field before I start to go into my major and I wanted to know is EE a promising engineering field? and if not, which engineering field is?
I am getting my BS soon, I'm okay with going on to get my Masters if I want to do Medical Physics, but I'm not too keen on getting a PhD. I do not want a teaching job. Can anyone explain life after college to me if you want a job not in teaching or grad school? I'm pretty clueless.
This is a little long but bare with me, I need help from some experts.
So I left high school when I was 15. Not because I was stupid, dumb, illiterate or whatever, it's because I was bullied. But I won't go into that. I made a career decision at 17 that I would be a custom motorcycle builder...
I am trying to decide between Physics or Engineering or maybe something else for my major in college next year.
I'm very interested in physics, and figuring out how the world works. I like to find completely new solutions to problems, as opposed to working off of other previous solutions...

I work for a research group at my university. We are considering the use of a hot-film sensor array to characterize flow over our a portion of an airfoil in the wind tunnel. We are looking for something like the http://www.taosystem.com/products/senflex/" sensors offered by Tao Systems. I tried...
I am coming towards the end of my BS in Electrical Engineering, and I have decided that I want to earn my PhD in Engineering when it's all said and done. I want to go to a top tier grad school program for my Masters and PhD but my family and I will not be able to really afford that. I also...
I got a bachelors in physics in '08 at an upper liberal arts college. Intended to take a year off but fell into a depressed rut (father died, girlfriend left, etc etc) and just worked a low-skill job / volunteered / played wow for two years.
Cleaned my act up a year ago. I'd surfed through...
Ok so here's my summarized story.
At the end of summer should be the start of my Senior year, but i dropped out and started college a year ago. I taught myself Calc I in two weeks while taking 18 credit hours and CLEPed out of it my first semester and received a 99.4% in Calc II the next...

Just wondering what I could go into for grad school with a ME undergrad?
I really enjoy physics, but I want to be more "hands-on" for my career, but at the same time I want to be able to freely communicate with professional physicists.
Is there a website or something that lays out graduate...
I have third (and final) round of interviews scheduled for next week with Qualcomm. The Qualcomm job is full-time, and in Colorado. In short, it's my dream job.

Hi,
I'm deciding whether or not to take AP Stats. I will be taking Honors Physics and AP Calculus AB and AP Latin. I've read that only Calculus-based stats is useful for Engineering. I don't want to take all three courses because I don't want to kill myself.
Is AP Stats absolutely...
Aside from some math courses I would be missing, would this degree suffice to get me into an electric engineering prog or something similar?

I was worried that I will not find a job this summer, so I took the first offer I got. (freshmans and sophomores, please don't make the same mistake, evaluate all other possible actions)
But the more time I spend doing my job, I realize just how far away from what I intend to do this job...
These are some notes of the observations I've made over the past few months looking for jobs. This might be useful for someone else but keep in mind it's rather focused around my personal situation and preferences. I did my PhD and postdoc in theoretical condensed matter physics, mostly DFT /...
Hi everyone, just kind of a general question here. I'm a physics major undergrad at Texas Christian University. I'm also minoring in Japanese, and will be close to proficient in the language by the time I graduate, including hiragana, katakana, and kanji writing systems. In general, in the scope...

So I want to be a physicist.
Avoiding false modesty, I'm pretty good at it, probably the best in my year in physics and possibly math. I never have problems learning, unless the material is shallowly presented and I reject it, which has happened in many of my classes, unfortunately. I've taken...
I was just wondering what my options are for internet access.
Things I've tried:
