A pump is a device that moves fluids (liquids or gases), or sometimes slurries, by mechanical action, typically converted from electrical energy into hydraulic energy. Pumps can be classified into three major groups according to the method they use to move the fluid: direct lift, displacement, and gravity pumps.Pumps operate by some mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary), and consume energy to perform mechanical work moving the fluid. Pumps operate via many energy sources, including manual operation, electricity, engines, or wind power, and come in many sizes, from microscopic for use in medical applications, to large industrial pumps.
Mechanical pumps serve in a wide range of applications such as pumping water from wells, aquarium filtering, pond filtering and aeration, in the car industry for water-cooling and fuel injection, in the energy industry for pumping oil and natural gas or for operating cooling towers and other components of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. In the medical industry, pumps are used for biochemical processes in developing and manufacturing medicine, and as artificial replacements for body parts, in particular the artificial heart and penile prosthesis.
When a casing contains only one revolving impeller, it is called a single-stage pump. When a casing contains two or more revolving impellers, it is called a double- or multi-stage pump.
In biology, many different types of chemical and biomechanical pumps have evolved; biomimicry is sometimes used in developing new types of mechanical pumps.
Efficiency of Ejector "as pump"
I was asked to find the efficiency of a steam ejector experiment "as a pump". So I tried the formula :
[(m(P/density + V^2/2))discharge - (m(P/density + V^2/2))suction]/
(m(P/density + V^2/2))steam inlet.
I am getting an efficiency of 0.5%.
Is this a...
An aquarium 2 m long, 1 m wide, and 1 m deep is full of water. Find the work needed
to pump half the water out of the aquarium. (The density of water, p, is 1000 kg/m3,
and acceleration due to gravity, g, is 9.8 m/s2.)
So in order to truly understand how to do these kind of problems I decided...
Hi all,
I am currently working on a water pipeline project and am investigating a pipe burst scenario at a pump station with the aim of producing a flow rate entering the pump room in the event of a burst.
For simplification and what has been used previously on similar jobs is to model...
Hi All,
i have a requirement to design a pump to pump 4000 litres of water a day at 40 mtr. head. which pump will be most suitable for this application and cheap??
can anyone of you help me in this subject ?
and also where can i refer to design that particular pump?
thanks in advance...
Have a spinning rotor/impellor with open channels directed radially outward (similiar to a radial vane centrifigal pump with 90 degree straight blades - such as an older automotive heater fan ). The channels have constant area from the inner to outer radius. Realize this isn't a very efficient...
Alright, so here goes, and by the way, this isn't homework, just in case you're wondering.
Question 1: So, i have a 12vdc 500amp battery/car inverter and a 12vdc 11amp sump pump. If I wire it up, approximately how long will they last?
Question 2: Also, I have a power inverter for my car, can I...
A right cylindrical tank is filled with sea water. The tank has a radius of 2 feet and a height of 8 feet. If the water level is now 2 feet below the top of the tank, how much work will be required to pump the sea water to the top of the tank? (The weight-density of seawater is 64 Ib/ft3.)...
Folks,
I am looking for a blower to produce a flow of ~150cfm (~4m^3/min) while pumping H2 pressurized at ~40bar. The blower needs to provide a pressure increase of ~5bar.
I am wondering if something like a supercharger blower might work.
This may seem like a stupid question, but what is the relationship to flow and pressure in a pump to flow and pressure in nozzles. Specifically i have 5 nozzles that i am pumping into rated at 3000 Psi @ 0.84 GPM, what do i size my pump to? Do i need a pump rated for 3000 Psi @ 4.2 GPM or do i...
Hi all,
I have the feeling I'm missing something big. Consider first a capacitor having +9V on both terminals, in this case nothing happens. Now I set the negative terminal to 0V, and make sure a current is able to flow; the capacitor will now charge up to 9V, right?
Ok, now I make sure...
Sirs, I need to make a pump to draw molten aluminum from one container to another container. The first container height is 1.5m. I wish to us a screw enclosed within a cylinder and powered by a motor. Can anyone help me with the detail design of the screw and cylinder? I welcome any other design...
I'm confused how a magnetic pump works as described in my text. I'll quote:
"""Liquid metals, such as the molten sodium used in certain nuclear reactors, can be moved through pipes using an electromagnetic pump that has no moving parts. If the metal has to be moved in a pipe that is...
Ok I searched and found this as the answer from a previous topic
"The sodium potassium pump is required to maintain osmotic balance and stabilize the cells volume. If you treat an animal cell with ouabain, which inhibits the Na+/K+ pump, it will swell and often burst.
Cells contain mostly...
Can anyone please help me with this problem?

We live in rural area and get our water from a well. Due to the high iron content in the water, beyond all of the normal considerations for purity, chlorine [bleach] is required to react out all of the iron. For years I used diaphram-style pumps that had a life expectancy [based on my...
urgent: mini pond/fountain pump workings
Well, it's not life-or-death but, I've got a deadline for tomorrow to finish this thing I've been working on for months and I've just came bang up against what might be a showstopper.
I'm building a pond widget that is powered by an 11W mini pond...
In many paper or book on laser, it is quite oftern to mention the pump and probe field. I understand what the pump field is, but what about the probe field? What we need a probe field? How does it work (how to "probe")? And why a probe field is always a weak field?
Hi
If a vacuum pump is operated on a test container (say at 150 degree C) and as a result at the outlet, water is condensed and collected. What would be the relation between Vacuum deviation in the test container and quatity of water extracted. Is it to do with Ideal gas equation, PV=nRT...
I hope I am asking this in the right forum.

Here's the situation. We have tried to replace a "non-clogging Submersible" pump that has been in service for 20+yrs and are experiencing catistrophic failures. The new pumps are the same rating as the old (as far as nameplate data goes) and nothing has changed to the electrical system. The...
hi, I've been inspired by this wind generator design: http://www.instructables.com/id/Pringles-Wind-Turbine-Pleech---Version-One/
to make it operate in reverse, that is, feed alternating current and make the thing spin.
The purpose of this is to make a pump by putting a wheel (similar to those...

Hiya
my question is
Why is it impossible with a pump to suck water from a lake if you place the pump 15 meters above the water
I think it has somthing to do with gravity but if anyone could explain it in detail that would be great
Thanks :)

I was told that a pump in a heating system that from time to time pushes against closed valves is not good for the pump. If so, how will it affect the pump in the long run?
