I'm curious how technology education in high school has progressed throughout the years.
I graduated HS in '89. While there I had three semesters of programming. Basic on an Apple 2E and RPG 2 and COBOL on an IBM systems 3 mid-range. Punch cards for the win.
Please share your experiences.
Hello, I,m korean high school student who likes mathematics. So I have made a math mock exam for KSAT, and this is a problem in the exam. It doesn’t need so long calculation but you can feel it a little difficult. (Sorry to my fool English performance. I’m not good at English)
Hello everyone,
A postion for an AP (advanced placement) physics teacher opened up at the high school I work at and I jumped all over it. More specifically, I will be teaching AP Physics 2. I believe I will be one of two teachers in our district teaching the course. I haven't had much...
In a school 315 girls play at least one sport. 100 play a fall sport, 150 play a winter sport, and 200 play a spring sport. If 75 girls play exactly 2 sports, how many play three?
Hi All,
I just completed a degree in physics and (pure) math and I am planning on applying to grad school in the fall. I'm mostly interested in applying to physics graduate programs, but I was wondering if my background was strong enough to the following applied math programs:
Stony Brook...
Physics forums members have ranted how high-school did not prepare students for college. However, I think that elementary school is as equally as important as high-school. Members have should be ranting about elementary school teachers too. The willingness to do homework is a skill that students...
In the 1960s there was a series of science-themed novels for middle school children. Each book began with a boy accidentally meeting a scientist or science-club member and being introduced to the subject. I remember one about rockets, one about geology (and one about archeology?). I don't...
Hi everyone.
In 2017, I received a bachelors degree in physics. I liked the subject and wanted to go to graduate school for something more practical, so I did. A year ago, I failed out of a PhD program in engineering. I was the worst student at that point. I was too shy to ask questions in...
I would like to ask if anyone has been admitted to a graduate school(US) straight to 2nd year after a theoretical masters MSc degree in the UK.
I am asking because I would really like to study in the US, preferably on top universities but I don't want to waste another year taking essentially...
I'm out of state for UCSB but I'm going to be in their CCS program, whereas I'm in state at Penn State but am currently on the waitlist for their honors program. Per year cost is 65k/year vs 25k/year. Neither will put us in debt, but obviously the former is quite a bit less comfortable. What...
Veritaseum showcases the Regeron Science Competition where 1 High School student was awarded $250,000 for their work in science:
In the video, Veritaseum mentions that only 2000 students typically compete in the yearly competition and that 1 in 50 students will be awarded $25,000 for...
Hey Everyone.
So basically I'm having tonnes of anxiety about my future and would like a bit of a reality check on where I stand and what I will be able to achieve. I go to one of the best universities in the US for undergrad Physics, yet my GPA is on the lower side (3.1). This university was...
I started off by finding when Fg=Fx:
(72)(x)=(31)(9.8)
x=4.2193m
After this I'm stuck and have a few things I'm confused about:
When the penguin's jumping, is there elastic energy? (because the rope's getting compressed? Or maybe not). Also, I know you can use energy conservation, but...
Hi, so some background. I am an undergrad just now finishing my second year in my biophysics degree. I wanted to go into biomedical engineering, I understand that this is an insanely competitive field. My GPA is embarrassingly low. There are some reasons behind it, but everyone has their reasons...

I'm currently an undergrad student who had to take a break from school for over a year and its been around 3 or 4 years since I took Calc I - Calc III and Linear Algebra. I'm debating on taking a introduction to differential equations course as an elective that starts in a couple weeks when I...
This one has really got me thinking:
https://edsource.org/2016/college-classes-for-middle-school-students-its-happening-in-hayward/93885
Maybe we are setting standards far too low for students even under (US) high school age?
I know there are programs in the US where you can graduate HS with...
Hi everybody. I'm 40 years old and have been working sales and retail jobs for most of my career and have decided that I'm going to back to school part time with eventually going into mechanical or bio medical engineering. I plan on taking linear algebra and calculus 1 in the fall of 2019 to get...
HI,
Do you think that the way we are taught science in school from grade school to college is unscientific? By unscientific I mean we take things as true without having proof (like ohm's law). I didn't question my teachers as much as I would of liked because they use to always say that things...
I’m disappointed with the position I’ve put myself in and I’d appreciate advice on how to move forward. For reference I’m 30 years old and living in the Chicago, IL suburbs.
I graduated with a bachelors degree in 2012. It took five years and I failed many physics and math classes, but I...
Hello everyone!
I graduated from UIUC with a 3.00 GPA in physics last year. (I managed to get this exact number) And my GPA of physics courses are not much higher than my overall GPA as well.
I plan to apply for grad school this year and go to grad school next year. And currently I am working...
Hello! First of all, thank you taking the time to read this. I'm a high school student currently about to begin my last year (I'm from Argentina so here we start in March) and would like to study physics in 2020. Because of that, I contacted a university here and they told me that if I wanted...
I have had around 2 year gap after finishing high school. The last 2 years of high school (11th and 12th grade where calculus, coordinate geometry, straight lines, circles, vectors, functions, quadratics, polynomials, probability, permutation etc. are taught here) , I barely studied and some how...
I've always wanted to be a Physicist and become a researcher. I'm particularly interested in particle physics and quantum computing. I have BS Computer Engineering and MS Computer Science degrees and have been working as a programmer for more than 5 years. How should I go towards a Physics...
So here’s the deal. I recently discovered about a semester I “took” nearly 10 years ago. I forgot that I even enrolled for classes because I decided college wasn’t for me at the time (I was just out of high school) and it was my first semester. I wasn’t aware of “officially dropping” your...
I am the captain of a high school solar car team in the Washington DC area. We were founded last year, and are currently building our second solar car to compete in the Solar Car Challenge, a national competition in Texas. One of the biggest issues we are constantly battling is our lack of...

Hi there,
I'm not sure this has been addressed before (couldn't find a post on this). I often see high school physics textbooks (and therefore courses) teach first thermodynamics, than optics, than finally wave motion. Is there a reason for this order or is it sort of random?
IMO, The most...
I'm currently almost done my first semester at University here in Canada. I want to go to a good graduate school in the US to study astrophysics in the future. Here in my University, and a lot of Universities in Canada have a 4.33 GPA scale. My GPA here is around a 3.3, that's roughly a B+ and a...
I am a freshman in high school currently and I am taking physics, but for me it seems too difficult even though I think I have tried everything (Reading from the textbook, tutoring with the teacher, khan academy, studying a lot...) The teacher is not very good at teaching, not saying this as a...
Hi.
My company will pay about 70% of my tuition cost per year for graduate school. Leaving about 2-4k un accounted for, depending on course load.
Any recommendations on scholarships or other options to pay the remaining balance?
Hi,
I'm a junior at a Ivy League (H/Y/P/C - going to remain anonymous for privacy reasons) and I wanted your honest opinion on what my chances are for graduate school in computational astrophysics and where I should look for the best chances.
GPA: 3.5/4 (working to raise this, had a bad...
I’ve been a school teacher for 6 years, and I want to get into coding. I’ve been told by a CS professor I know that my background is very sought after in the tech industry, and I would be very competitive if I got into coding. Is this true? What’s the best route, bootcamp, nanodegree, etc.? What...
So I’m a high school freshman this school year. We have these little presentations by our counselors about planning out our high school years and beyond. In our high school, you only need 3 credits for math (3 years) to graduate. I am currently in Algebra 1. I heard that my school offers these...
I am in a high school physics class and have been recently assigned a mouse trap. We were given a mouse trap, that is all, and sent out on our own to create one. The requirements for this specific mousetrap car are to go forward 3 meters, then backwards 2 meters, and finally forward three meters...

Hello,I have been accepted for a physics teacher position in a high school. This would be my first job ever. I taught "tutored" students before in my home university for two semesters, and I think I am a good teacher. But, I feel that teaching high school students is totally different.
I am not...
During a school event, there were 8 times as many pupils as teachers and there were three times as many boys as girls. There were 70 fewer teachers than boys. How many people were there at the school event?
My answer: is there a better way to do it.
We know that pupils are students
