A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.
I teach a first year Physics course. The incoming students (grades 10-12) have little to no Physics background. We are making some modifications to our work and energy unit. One modification that has been discussed is what to do about kinetic friction. At present, we account for friction as a...
Hello. Based on very good reviews on this site I have chosen the books Kleppner Kolenkow Mechanics and Purcell Electricity and Magnetism to study the physics coursework for my first year in university.
So here's my question: Does Kleppner Kolenkow cover all the prerequisites I am going to need...
I need help. I completed my post graduation in 2015 material science, now it nearly 2 year gap want to do Ph.D . How can i start . i don't have GATE score, how can i apply for Ph.D.
What were the methods of time-keeping for northern Europe before the Christian epoch and apart from the Julian calendar? Apart from lunar reckoning, there is also historical mention of an eight-part solar year, with solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarters.
Today there are "neo-pagans" who...
I read an article with this with great interest but also puzzlement. It talked about sending a pulse of light through a section of laser excited Caesium atoms (6cm I think) if traveling at vacuum speeds the pulse should have taken 0.2ns but actually arrived 62ns before it would have done...
I'm studying a 4 year physics degree, in the first 2 years my plan was to do a phd after but things have changed, I've done some research and I'm now thinking of changing my career path to finance, is it too late?
has anyone had this experience before? I'd like to know stories of how people...

The number of rotations of Earth around its own axis in one year as measured by an observer from the sun.
given P(-1,1,2), Q(-3,0,4), R(3,2,1), find an equation of the line through P that is parallel to the line through Q and R.
All the words after the given three points really confuse me and I just need some help on where to start to tackle this problem.
Thanks
Hello PF! This place is so great at helping me with my math homework, maybe ya'll can give me advice on life as well!
As the title indicates, I'm looking for any information/opinions what-so-ever on topics of teaching math abroad at a maximum of a high school level and how beneficial would it...
I want to describe a planet that has 13 fifty-two day months and a 36 hour day.
IF someone could point me to a place where I can figure this, it would be appreciated.
What's the math?
Here we are, the end of the year and it is time to think about how I will track my commitments/time/to-do lists for next year. For about the past decade plus I have been a Molskine (http://www.moleskinerie.com/), either daily or weekly planner. I am considering a Hobonichi Techo Planner...
So i was looking through The Guardian(newspaper) and found this question, Titled 'are you smarter then a 10 year old?' and as you can guess i had no clue what to do. Also i thought if i looked at the answer maybe i would realize how it worked. Oh. how wrong was I! Is anyone able to break it down...

Hello comrades, I am a bit silly about this, but i started 1 month ago the first year at college (physics) after 10 years out of any academic course.
When i graduated from high school (a long time ago), i got good grades at pre-calc, but now I am having lots of problems because i feel lost and...
I have been struggling to make this decision for the past year. I am a straight A 2nd/3rd year mechanical engineering student and I really can't decide between engineering and physics. My whole life I have always wondered about the universe, and why things work the way they do. I am way more...
I was in a primary school class room the other day and the teacher asked me for help with this geometry problem, that he had set for his class as an extension challenge, but then realized he couldn't do.
The known angles are marked in degrees. We have to find the angle x.
I spent five minutes...
hello. I was originally planning to get a BS in statistics but then i chickened out because i feared that i might not be mathematically gifted/strong enough to get through the program, which would result in me not having the very basic in today's world : a bachelor's degree. So i switched to...
I am in my last year as an undergrad and will be graduating in the spring with a BS in Physics. I personally have terrible grades this including overall GPA and major specific GPA (currently around a 2.2 for both). At this point, bringing my GPA up is nearly impossible without some post...
I'm a computer science student in the UK. People are telling me that an industrial year placement is crucial for getting a job when you graduate. For various reasons I can't do an industrial year. What are my prospects like in terms of getting a job? I basically have nothing to add to my CV...
I try to get my flu shot early each year because of my medical work, and I got mine a couple of days ago. The pharmacy only had Trivalent vaccine, so that's what I got. But looking into the Quadrivalent vaccine, it looks like the extra protection (against both B strains) might have been worth...
Just a thought...I know it is impossible, but...
What would you see in a mirror if you set up millions of mirrors, each reflected to the next mirror (each not too far apart), maybe in a spiral format, so that the total distance of reflections was one light year. The last mirror was angled to...
I'm an incoming freshman to the University of California San Diego as a Materials Science and Nanoengineering major, and I'm interested in doing research. I've been a research assistant for over 5 years at the University of Nebraska Lincoln (2 in biochemistry, 3 in physical chemistry, and 1 in...
In what year was it first discovered that wormholes are non-traversable because the introduction of infalling matter caused the throat to collapse? Who discovered this?
The main question stems from the answer for this one:
If I have a light year long rod and push it on one end, how long would it take for the other end to move?
Still Unsure of this answer.
Main Question:
If I had 2, light-year long conductive rods with a voltmeter attached at the ends then...
Hi there. I'm currently in my senior year for my physics degree. I was wondering whether it would be wiser to finish up my undergrad this year, or if I'd be better off taking a fifth year to complete it. My university does not grade with + or -, so a low B is represented exactly the same as a...

Hi, I am only 13, but am really interested in physics. My highest level of math knowledge is pre-algebra, but I'll be in algebra 1 once school starts. I am a fast learner and know I can learn the physics criteria if it is explained thoroughly. Please don't let my math knowledge make you think I...
Academically, I look like I slacked off sophomore year at UIUC. On the other hand, living in a really bad situation and losing focus during that year can do a number on you, but it's my fault I let it affect me.
Here's where we are, everyone. Over the course of a year, I have gone from having a...
I recently got decent job and that allowed me to go back to college and finish my physics studies. I stopped half way into a bachelor degree. I admit I forgot half of what I knew 3 years ago when I took a break. So, do you have any advice on how to do parallel work/college thing? If you have...
I'm already in grad school and I have my last shot at applying for the NSF. The first semester of my grad school was going great until a death in my family to someone I was very close to. I unraveled and my grades sunk.
Just not that bad, like I overall passed my classes. However, I am sure it...
Hi folks,
I was wondering if there exists a generic book that explains all the math for a first year at the university. I am thinking about a book like Tipler in Physics, but for Math.
The topics I need to review are:
Vectors in 3d. Scalar, vector and mixed product.
Trigonometry...
So I will be starting an undergraduate MSci degree in Physics/Theoretical Physics in 2017, for the time being I am on a gap year. What's the best way to mentally prepare for a theoretical physics degree? I am not just talking about being familiar with the topics discussed, but also improving my...
Hi all,
I am currently taking a year off after graduating with my bachelors in physics. Hence I have a year to either work (really need to make money) or travel. I have a feeling that if I applied to a full-time job and left after a year, it would be a form of betrayal. Is it wise to...

Hi, I am wondering what are some good ideas for a first year undergraduate science research project? I am majoring in Astronomy so am after some ideas. My special interests are Pluto, Black Holes and of course Planet X.
I just finished my first year in chemical engineering and I am making the switch to a double major in math/physics next year. I'm going to a mid-sized school in Canada.
What kind of research opportunities are there for me after I complete my second year next summer? What kind of interships are...
I've been admitted to UT Arlington with 100% tuition scholarship. However, even after the scholarship, the living expenses are quite a bit for me (however, with on campus jobs and all, I believe my family will be able to manage so I think that I'll leave the financial issues aside). I'm not...
