A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year.The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.
Hello
Could someone suggest a good book for my son to read to learn algebra?
I look in the bookstores and the books titled "Algebra..." all involve equations and unknowns and arithmetic manipulations and train or work problems (2 farmers plow three fields in one day, etc)

I feel like there is an expectation from society for every 18 year old to go to college immediately after high school. In my opinion, this results in millions of people being pressured to enter into a program that they are not ready for.
Me, personally, I went into the wrong program at the...
Hey everyone,
I need to take Gen. Chem 2, and planned on doing it over the Summer in a 6-week condensed course with another 9-week programming class. I'm not sure if this is overboard, but I feel like it should be manageable with no jobs or interns this Summer. The reason I want to take it this...

Hi
I don't really know how I got to third year but I'm here and I'm a bit disappointed in the fact that I've learned stuff but at the same time feel like I haven't really learned much.
I would love going through books and reading in depth about what my lecturers are teaching me, like I like...
Hi all,
So the (hypothetical) question I have is about the range of the Earth's length of orbit (number of days) within the Sun's habitable zone which could sustain human life. I.e. what would the length of the shortest 'habitable' year be, and the longest (in days)? What would our living...
Course Selection is coming up next week in my school and I am still deciding between 2 slots and 3 desired classes of mine. In my school we have 8 classes all together with 4 on "A" days and 4 on "B" days. Here are my selected classes that have already been picked out:

Hi guys,
I really need help with deciding my courses for next year. Currently, I'm a sophomore in high school rising to a junior next year, and today, we began doing course selections for next year. Now, before I continue, I didn't just start thinking about my courses for next year today. I've...
Hi all!
Now I don't know whether the question I am about to pose is something that can be answered intelligibly. Maybe it is just a case about motivation...but I am not too sure at the moment.
My question is: Does mediocre performance in first and second year physics present a possible...
Hi
I am applying to the universities but I think I am bit confused with something.
Actually I am applying to the universities after taking a year gap. But some universities are asking me to make my decision between these two option:
Mature student or high school student
or
gap year student...
I'm going to skip to the chase and give you the basics of my situation.
I'm very weak at physics as i didn't take any high school classes (wasn't interested at the time) and also didn't finish high school due to personal reasons.
I'm fairly good at algebra, some calculus but could use a lot...

Emily's brother, Jack, is now 105cm tall, having grown by one sixth of his height a year ago. How tall was Jack one year ago?
Homework Equations
Now my teacher told me to do this:
x = 105 - (105/7)
x = 105 - 15
x = 90 cm
The Attempt at a Solution
So 90cm is the answer...
I am a senior in high school who is anxious to begin my physics major. Next year, I will likely attend UC Berkeley or UT Austin. I have general question, but if someone has information particular to these schools, that would be appreciated too. What does the course load for a first year physics...

I'm entering my 3rd year, for a bachelors degree in Physics. I messed up in the first year and now I'm trying to catch up.
Can I get a place in a university for a doctorate or MA afterwards?? Even if my grades are really good in each subject/course?
I'm getting worried! Thanks.
Hey guys,
From the title you probably get the idea about my question as I am so confused.

Should I opt to do research which would be very time consuming or focus primarily on my remaining upper level this year and get As? Thinking to do research after I graduate next Summer. I've only had 1 "REU" so far.
Hi, Just wondering: The lunar orbit around the Earth is tilted 5.1 degree with respect to the Earth's orbit around the sun (as described in the video), so only at 2 times during the year the Earth is aligned with the sun such that lunar eclipses can happen IF the moon is behind the Earth...
I've noticed that Harvard Extension and other colleges seem to only offer one year of "physics" courses in their course offering books. After the first year, what is a logical next step for someone wanting to learn more? Favorite physics topic is electricity, all applications of it.
So I got killed this past year in physics. Combined with the fact that I slacked off a lot in first year, I have an awful GPA. It's currently sitting at 1.66 ( out of 4.3) I need ~2.0 to get into honors physics. I'm guessing the possibility of grad school is out the window. I've been studying...
Hello everybody,
Like you, I love physics and would love to obtain at least a B.sc in Physics, but I am in a sort of a dilemma. Should I go to Leipzig, where they have an English taught bachelor or should I spend a year studying German in order to take a DSH exam and then attend a German...
Hello, I'm currently a philosophy major and I'm going to start my sophomore year this fall, but I've considered changing my major to astronomy. The problem with this is that I've always wanted to graduate in just 4 years, and the only way this could happen is if I filled up the next two summers...

OK, either I'm looking at this the wrong way, or this is way above what a 10 year old should be.
