A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.
Because I had a lot of high school credits, I am able to to complete a physics/math dual major in 3 years time. I just got some extra funding from a few scholarships that I cannot apply for graduate school, but would allow me to stay here for an extra year. If I don't, I'm essentially wasting...

Lets suppose I had a very powerful telescope and I could see 10 light years away. Would I see cars and people on that planet as they were 10 years ago? Would I actually see the people moving and the cars moving on the ground?
Hi!
I'm an Indian student from the CBSE curriculum in 10th standad (started a month ago). I want to do under-graduation in Astronomy / Computer Sciences / Robotics / Mechanical Engineering (still not decided yet. But it'd be much better if I can able to study all of them together :p) in any of...
I'm curious as to whether completing one's undergraduate studies faster is a disadvantage for applying to graduate school. While there are many reasons to stay the full four years, many also have real reasons to finish earlier (financial concerns being a main one).
I'm going to assume that all...
While browsing the homework questions section I find myself unable to answer - for example - some of the 1st/2nd year physics questions and I'm currently in my 3rd year. I could have answered them at the time of studying but now it seems I can only remember the things I'm currently studying. Is...

I was reading up on the Andromeda Galaxy and it was saying that it was 2.2 to 3 million light years away from earth. So my question is how do we measure how far it is in light years?
Hello,
Always looking for answers to my questions,
I had some answers like what micro black holes
possibly created at the LHC (if it does not evaporate) would put millions or billions of years to be dangerous? I would like to know why
Sorry if I come to you
Ps : sorry for the way I did not...
On the other hand, what if we only have two atoms of an element with a half life of ten years. Then after then years, only one atom of that original element remains. What happens next? Is the lone surviving atom immutable?
I thought that this might be a concern for the standard Cosmological model?
An extremely large Black Hole discovered to have existed just 900M years after the Big Bang...
Hi, my name is Matt, I'm 16 years old and an aspiring physicist. I've recently found myself in a position of great uncertainty. I'll provide some background. I was a reasonably successful High School student although academics were secondary to leisure in my life. At the beginning of my junior...
I'm studying at a trade school right now, to pursue a career not in the sciences. I'm also considering pursuing a degree(s) in a field of science later on, not just because of the additional job market, or the additional skills, but also because of a love and respect for the subjects, and a...
How much temperature is needed to melt ice -30C that covers an area of 34 million km2 and has the height of 11.4 km in 400 years? For example, X number of celsius degrees are applied non-stop for 400 years in order to melt this ice entirely from the surface (turn to water)
Where has my thinking gone wrong in the following?
A man begins traveling to a destination several thousand light years away, accelerating to a velocity of near-light speed. Time dilations and space contractions would result in the trip lasting only a few years from his perspective. From the...
Hi I'm feeling very pathetic at the moment...! Can anyone tell me how to work out the following equation on a calculator? Thanks! PLEASE NOTE THE "6" is the power of 6 :-) So, here's the equation... X = 5220 (1.05) 6
We can see galaxies/planets light years away determine their composition such such as if they have water et cetera. My question is if light takes billions of years to reach us from there how is that we can determine such things? Is the speed at which a telescope can zoom faster than the speed at...

Does anyone actually believe this statement? I had a few well meaning, though severely misguided, people try to tell me this back when I was in high school. How can it be better? No bills? So what? Do people just forget what it was like to actually be in high school (or worse, did they peak in...
In the past it appeared that in some institutions, the very fact that a postdoc could get research funding on his/her own might have been the impetus for them to continue to hire his/her as a staff member. As much is stated in the PhysicsForums guide...
I am curious to hear your stories / opinions on what do physicists do after many post-PhD years in academia?
A small fraction may get more-or-less ongoing research and/or teaching academic positions, but what about the majority of physicists? It appears that if a physicist tries to pursue a...
And it seems like it's so straightforward for everyone else, which is incredibly frustrating. It's about the relationship between pressure and flow rate of a fluid moving in a pipe or closed system.
Often what I've heard is, they have an inverse relationship...but then there are cases where...
I graduated with my BS in physics/astronomy in 2010, and at that point I was super burnt out on school, and knew that I would not be able to handle grad school, and had no interest at all in doing research. Since then, I have been working in informal science education (including a one year grad...

Pardon my phrase, but heads need to roll on this. The sad thing is that this is likely a common story in many big sport universities. A total sham.
I am trying to understand the concept that the universe is infinite at that nothing holds the universe in. I have been thinking hard on this and was wondering if someone could help me or am i I just to young to understand?

As the title says. I found some contradictory articles about us (not) having the same dna as prehistoric men 50.000 years ago.

I’m graduating with a Physics degree next year but for various reasons I cannot go straight to grad school and get a PhD. I probably won’t be back to school for some time (I’m projecting 10-15 years). Will it be hard to start a Physics PhD after so long? Is there ageism in academia?
Thanks

I was at home that summer, between my junior and senior years in college. My parents and I watched Nixon's departure on live TV that morning, followed by Gerald Ford's taking the oath of office as his successor.
Hello
This is question is bugging me for years.
Why is division by 0 undefined and not multiplication by 0 undefined?
If any number multiplied by 0 is 0 then the logical answer for any number divided by 0 would be ∞ (for me at least).
If you "define" N/0=∞ and N*0=undefined then there are...
By the time I apply for PhD's, it will have been 2 years since I did my REU over the summer in a plasma physics lab. Do you think the Prof will still remember me at all and/or be able to write a letter for me? He has already written me letters for other stuff so I know he'd probably be willing...
Somehow I managed to miss an anniversary from my childhood: It was 45 years ago last Sunday that the Cuyahoga River caught fire in Cleveland, Ohio:

Hi, I'm currently a junior majoring in physics/math, and I'm on an accelerated masters track so I can get my masters in physics after 4 years plus a summer or extra semester. My plan after graduating is to go travel around for a few years (possibly between 2-3), and then return to finish my PhD...
Hi guys,
I have a question that I need some help with. I'm not a biologist nor do I have any educational background in biology so please excuse any ignorance that I may show.

It looks into...
Hello, everybody.

Assuming the person is of capable intelligence, what research prospects are there for someone who obtained their PhD at 40 years old? I'd specifically like to hear opinions about PhDs of theoretical physics, experimental physics, pure mathematics, and theoretical computer science.

A Star at the Edge of Eternity
