A year is the orbital period of a planetary body, for example, the Earth, moving in its orbit around the Sun. Due to the Earth's axial tilt, the course of a year sees the passing of the seasons, marked by change in weather, the hours of daylight, and, consequently, vegetation and soil fertility. In temperate and subpolar regions around the planet, four seasons are generally recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter. In tropical and subtropical regions, several geographical sectors do not present defined seasons; but in the seasonal tropics, the annual wet and dry seasons are recognized and tracked.
A calendar year is an approximation of the number of days of the Earth's orbital period, as counted in a given calendar. The Gregorian calendar, or modern calendar, presents its calendar year to be either a common year of 365 days or a leap year of 366 days, as do the Julian calendars; see below. For the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the calendar year (the mean year) across the complete leap cycle of 400 years is 365.2425 days. The ISO standard ISO 80000-3, Annex C, supports the symbol a (for Latin annus) to represent a year of either 365 or 366 days. In English, the abbreviations y and yr are commonly used.
In astronomy, the Julian year is a unit of time; it is defined as 365.25 days of exactly 86,400 seconds (SI base unit), totalling exactly 31,557,600 seconds in the Julian astronomical year. The word year is also used for periods loosely associated with, but not identical to, the calendar or astronomical year, such as the seasonal year, the fiscal year, the academic year, etc. Similarly, year can mean the orbital period of any planet; for example, a Martian year and a Venusian year are examples of the time a planet takes to transit one complete orbit. The term can also be used in reference to any long period or cycle, such as the Great Year.
"So what exactly has changed in physics in the last 20 years?"
So I was at a Christmas party joking around with one of my friends who is in electrical engineering and he said something basically to the effect of "Well physics hasn't changed in like 50 years"
Which is actually not a bad...

9 years ago, farmer Tor Grønningen brought home to she-goats, a mum and a wilful daughter on his pickup.
The first thing the daughter goat did when he opened up the pickup, was to run off into the wilds.
And there, she has stayed, only occasionally neaking down in summertime to snatch some...

I am BSc Physics graduates 3 years ago . After graduation I went into a totally different field "Accounting". (allow me to skip the reason here)

Hey guys, i really need your help on this.
I completed a 3 years BSc in physics in april 2013. However i am not at all satisfied with my preparation (the teachers at my college were hardly interested, yes that's the state of pure physics in my university!). I am planning to take a gap of a...
So I have been reading this forum for a while and I have heard more than a few people say things like the employment rate for physics PhDs is worse than it is in the humanities and way, WAY worse than for med school, so that doing a physics PhD as opposed to a med school degree is a huge...
I still want to be a physicist. I want to go back to school next fall, but haven't really made plans yet. I went to university for one year after high school, failed one semester and withdrew the next before being kicked out of the dorms for smoking pot. The next 3 years I attended a local...
Dear all,
I genuinely cannot fathom a reason why most universities have a strict policy against hiring postdocs with five or more years of postdoctoral research experience. Could somebody please elaborate?
I cannot imagine anybody benefiting from this arrangement.

I was just wondering if this is a common thing that people do. I am a junior in college and I had a software engineering internship and enjoyed it very much and I think it'd a career i'd enjoy. However I've always wanted to get a phd in computer science and do research in computer graphics. At...

Afternoon all, just a general question I'd like to ask and I'm interested in your responses. Look how far technology has come in the last 70 odd years. From the first black and white tv to HD flat screens. From propeller driven planes to stealth fighters. From the Z1 computer to the modern Intel...
The Battle of Gettysburg was the decisive battle of the American Civil War, fought from July 1 to July3, 1863 just south of the Pennsylvania town for which it is named. It was a Union victory but the southern commander Robert E Lee escaped with a good part of his army intact. The war would last...

That sounds pretty obvious. But it wasn't because of the interpretation of evidence. The charcoal / soot required as evidence was not available.

How big was the Universe 13 billion years ago??
If we look from the Earth, in opposite directions, at objects that are 13 billion LY away, they are 26 billion LY apart.
We are seeing them as/where they were 13 billion years ago, so they must have been 26 billion LY apart then.

this relies on the fact that we can stuff more transistors into smaller spaces.
we won't reach quantum limitations until atleast 50 years.
