Cover songs versus the original track, which ones are better?

In summary, the conversation discussed which songs were performed, arranged, or produced better in a cover than the original version. They also debated which songs should have been left alone and whether restricting covers to released singles limits interesting comparisons. The discussion also touched on the subjectivity of judging which version is "better" and the importance of adding something unique to a cover. Examples of good and unnecessary covers were also mentioned. Overall, the conversation highlighted the different interpretations and emotions that can be evoked by a cover compared to the original version.

Hmm, unfortunately she made only 8 videos :(. I like her Royal Blood cover actually.

The Jimi Hendrix song is a little bit less for me, sacrilegious! No, kidding, but in my opinion Jimi Hendrix can only be covered by Stevie Ray Vaughn for good results (at least, I like this cover):

He was a great a player and I love tribute bands, watching and playing in. What I do not get about SRV is that his thing seemed to be "he plays like Hendrix."

This was before tribute bands were a huge thing (locally- we still had Bjorn again and Bootleg Beatles)

This was him, SRV BUT direct imitation of Hendrix, neither one thing nor the other.

She had to go UP an octave for the middle section as it was too low for her! Ha ha! Who can say that when they are covering Judas Priest!?
She does have an advantage, she is female and she is about 11 or something!
Great, loved it.

Today I learned that J Page composed this the first time he ever picked up a mandolin.
The vocal was a duet with Sandy Denny.

I thought it was Robert Plant for years! An overdub with a prettier tone!
I do not think they played with anyone else on all their records, just her.
Lovely folk voice like Maddie Pryor.
One of those 1970s rock roll deaths unfortunately.

Impressive, not much in the way over dub vocals. A bit of double tracking and nice harmony. The mandolin parts are so close to the original, I can't tell if she has somehow lifted those or just copied all the parts.

Also, this is what a hippie girl looks like in 2024?
More of this and less Lady Ga Ga!

Only if the title is entered as text in a post (not just a YouTube URL),
you can use the Search in the upper right corner
to search for (say) a title in "This Thread",
then Click "Search" (not "Advanced Search" which I tend to do since it is vertically below "This Thread")

https://www.physicsforums.com/search/16271609/?q=Sound+of+Silence&t=post&c[thread]=1050205&o=date

but since the title wasn't included in the text,
this search didn't pick up #11 that @pinball1970 recalled.

Off topic - one I heard today as background music in a cafe which was just awful. It seemed to be from an album of covers in a slow, relaxed style with dreamy female vocals. Not necessarily a bad thing (see the excellent cover of California Dreamin' upthread), but to my mind wildly inappropriate for Paint It Black.
