The focal length of a converging lens can be calculated using the formula 1/f = 1/do + 1/di. In this case, with an object height of 5.0 cm placed 12 cm from the lens and an image formed 61 cm away on the same side, the calculation yields a focal length of 10.03 cm. It is important to be cautious with the signs of the object and image distances, as the object is on the left side of the lens, making do = +12 cm. The discussion emphasizes the need to verify the signs for accurate calculations. Overall, the focal length of the lens is confirmed to be 10.03 cm.

1. When an object 5.0 cm tall is placed 12 cm from a converging lens, an image is formed on the same side of the lens as the object but the image is 61 cm away from the lens. What is the focal length of the lens?

2. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di

3. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di
= 1/12 + 1/61
= 10.03 cm

I'm not sure if this is right.

Be careful with the signs of the distances. If you place the object on the left of the lens then you have d0 = +12 cm. But you also have an image on the left side of the lens. So check the sign of the image.

oh ok thank you!

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
