Focal Length of Converging Lens: 10.03 cm

In summary, the focal length of the lens is approximately 10.03 cm based on the given information about the object's height, distance from the lens, and the equation 1/f = 1/do + 1/di. It is important to pay attention to the signs of the distances and the location of the image in relation to the lens when solving for the focal length.

1. When an object 5.0 cm tall is placed 12 cm from a converging lens, an image is formed on the same side of the lens as the object but the image is 61 cm away from the lens. What is the focal length of the lens?

2. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di

3. 1/f = 1/do + 1/di
= 1/12 + 1/61
= 10.03 cm

I'm not sure if this is right.

Be careful with the signs of the distances. If you place the object on the left of the lens then you have d0 = +12 cm. But you also have an image on the left side of the lens. So check the sign of the image.

oh ok thank you!

FAQ: Focal Length of Converging Lens: 10.03 cm

What is the definition of focal length?

Focal length is the distance between the center of a lens or curved mirror and the point at which light rays converge to a single point.

How is the focal length of a converging lens measured?

The focal length of a converging lens is measured by the distance between the center of the lens and the point where parallel light rays converge after passing through the lens.

Why is the focal length of a converging lens important?

The focal length of a converging lens determines the distance at which objects will appear in focus when viewed through the lens. It also affects the magnification and image quality produced by the lens.

What factors can affect the focal length of a converging lens?

The thickness and curvature of the lens, as well as the refractive index of the material it is made of, can affect the focal length of a converging lens. Additionally, the position of the lens in relation to the object being viewed can also impact the focal length.

How does the focal length of a converging lens relate to its power?

The focal length of a converging lens is inversely proportional to its power. A shorter focal length indicates a higher power lens, while a longer focal length indicates a lower power lens.
