Ideal Home: Stone Cottage, Exposed Beams, Antique Furniture

In summary, the conversation was about what kind of home an expert would want. The expert would like a stone built cottage with exposed beams, big open fireplaces, and large rooms filled with antique furniture. There would be a huge kitchen with a wood burning range, flag stone floors, and bare stone walls. The expert would want something in the middle of the woods, on the top of a big mountain.

Thats my cottage, the only thing missing is the distant castle on the sky line,
you have wonderful taste Evo, can you imagine sitting around an open roaring
fire with good friends rapt in conversation cosy and snug.
It sounds perfect to me. :approve:

The castle is hidden behind the tree, you can see it from the cottage.

Darn, you're killing me wolram. I second everything zooby said. I guess we can let zooby set up a brush shelter near the cottage after we get settled in.

I'm waiting for the arrival of Prince Wolram. :approve:

With Evo in residence how could he stay away, drawn by sweet innocence
enthralled at the thought at seeing her beauty for the very first time, he
would ride from dusk till dawn and let nothing stand in his way.

I think i will build Zooby an annex to his taste, and he can be a companion
and may be do a little work for his keep.

Hm, I suspect "talking intelligent stuff" is code for "playing strip poker", and "around the fire" means "in the hot tub". And I'm not falling for that again. :-p
:-p Wolram doesn't strike me as that type. But then he was intrigued by the stiletto heeled boots...

I'll chop wood, haul water from the well, pull weeds from the garden. If you're bored, I'll entertain you with patter songs from Gilbert and Sullivan. I'll let you win at cards.

My ideal home is a death star. With an armada of star destroyer escorts. Just hope one of them shoots down that pesky single x-wing.

Something rustic and solid, like a log cabin. Something about 2000 square feet, two story, chalet style. Stone fireplace, nice deck facing the south, many grown up trees to provide shade, and of course an old fashioned hot tub fueled by a fireplace. Location, somewhere in the cascade mountains here in Oregon or even Northern California.

first, i want my home to be in the mountains. above a really beautiful lake, and in the woods. its really important that there be little to no light pollution, and i suppose i'd like a wide open field nearby to stargaze and play in. i want a large enough yard for my sons to play in on their four wheelers and bikes. and i want them to have lots of adventures. There will of course be a big elaborate playhouse that my husband, (hmm... my ideal husband...) will build for all the children off in the yard, or possibly down by the lake. i also want a really beautiful garden to walk around and read in. with a picnic table for nice summer days when i can bring dinner outside for the family.

Then, let's see... the inside will be open. lots of windows and sun light. i want a big kitchen so everyone can feel free to come in and join and help me when i cook supper or bake pies. and i want a separate dining room. The upstairs will be a master suite, with a connected bath room that has a separate bath and shower. i want a deep bath tub that i can really melt into, and the shower will be made of stone and glass. and it will be open with no curtain or doors, because its the master suite of course...

the basement will be a play area for the kids. it will be mostly cement floored so they can rollerskate and stuff down there, but there will be a capeted area with a sofa and loads of pillows every where. there will be a bar filled with lots of fresh fruit drinks and snacks for the kids. and adults can feel free to bring down anything from the upstairs liquor cabinet, (which we be locked just in case my children are experimental trouble makers... unlike their mother...) it'll have a nice stereo system and speakers set up, and some fun lighting too. it'll be a really fun place for everyone to entertain guests and have a nice time.

then the middle floor will have the childrens bedrooms, all near each other so that when they're young they can easily play, and so that when they're older, they don't forget about each other. we'll have a modest but comfortable guest room and tv room.

hopefully, we'll also have a sun room that extends out into the garden. Oh, and this will connect to the swimming pool. we need a swimming pool. a big enough one to play games in, but nothing too grandoise.

I'd also really love a library, separate from the house a little, and with a study. i want it to have high ceilings, and all the walls covered in books. in here there will be a fire place, and a big plush chair. there will also be cushions in case the kids want to come and hear stories. there will also be a hot chocolate machine for the colder nights when one wants to curl up with a warm drink.

and hmm, i want to have a total of 2 and a half baths. enough bedrooms to comfortably accommodate my children. i want one tv in the house total and that will be in a main TV/family room on the entrance level. ok, and maybe a little tv for my husband to watch the sports on when he's down at the bar with his buddies. mostly, everyone will be outdoors a lot in summer, and hopefully even in the winter. and i want the house to not seem too huge or extravagant. just really really nice... and fun. and in a really really nice area.

mentioned them today.

heh, of course i'd visit yours... sounds like it'll be a real party over there... course, i'll be quite the young'un, but it'll be good company.

and you definately ought show up at my place. two reasons i want my home: one is to have a wonderful, happy, fun place for my children to call home, and the other is to entertain guests. of course there's my master suite and library for my (and my husband's...) sanity... but mostly its about everyone else in my life. if i ever get a house like that, you can bet i'll be having everyone over for dinner at least once.

That sounds painful, do you have a regeneration chamber, so you can
fight another day, or are you vacuum dust.

Hmmmmm...(just kidding )

My ideal home would have lots of windows - I love bright, sunlit rooms. It would be set in a small clearing in the center of a large, wooded lot (so, that would be brightly sunlit by day, and nothing but stars and moonlight at night, quiet and secluded enough that I don't see my neighbors unless I go looking for them (or vice versa). Inside, it would have a large kitchen with all the best appliances, but to the extent possible, they'd be concealed behind wood panels that blend with the cabinets (I like the conveniences, but it starts to make a kitchen feel cold if the appliances dominate it). Just a half wall separating the kitchen from the family/living room (ideally, this would be a breakfast bar so quick meals or chatting with friends over coffee could be done in my cozy kitchen space...that's why it needs a warm feel because friends gather in kitchens). The family room needs to have bay windows to capture as much sunlight as possible during the day plus room for plants, almost a mini-greenhouse, including one of those little water bubbler things that sounds so tranquil. The family room will have a fireplace too, and will be decorated in warm Earth tones with carpet on the floor. I don't need a separate living room and family room, just one large dual-purpose room; a place that's both inviting for company yet comfortable for just relaxing. The family room and kitchen should both open to a formal dining room (I do enjoy the formal dinner on occassion). The kitchen shouldn't be totally open to the dining room, just a convenient doorway for serving, but the family room should be more open to the dining room, perhaps separated only by french doors or something else so that one can either have a small, intimate dinner party within the formality of the enclosed dining room, or a large, family gathering where the dining table can be expanded outward into the family room to accommodate many more guests for a veritable feast. Off to the other side of the kitchen would be an office. This would be decorated in rich, deep paint colors and wood tones...cherry or mahogany. Again, it must have plenty of bright light, but perhaps high windows over built-in bookcases, and just one nook just the right size for a sofa surrounded by windows and recessed lighting above for basking in luxury while reading. This would be a large room too, as I live in my office as much as my kitchen/family room.

The second floor would be the bedrooms. Three or four bedrooms seems sufficient. The master suite (bedroom, bathroom, walk-in closets) would be at one end, then the staircase would come up the center, and the other end would have the cluster of smaller bedrooms. One would be a guest room, with its own private bathroom. The other one (or two) would be children's rooms with higher windows. These would be separated from the guest room by the guest room bath and a second, interior bathroom that opens into the hallway for kids to use (my ideal house will have a husband and children living in it too ). The laundry room will be on the second floor too. I'm not lugging laundry all the way to some basement laundry room when it's all coming from the second floor.

Outside, I want a big, covered porch in the front with rocking chairs, and a deck and patio area in the back surrounding a small pool (oh, and the deck MUST be made of that maintenance-free composite material), then beyond the patio, ferns and hostas and a little stone path transitioning out into the wooded part of the yard (no lawn to mow!).

But, not that I've thought about this at all or anything.

Usually around $100 per square foot for a finished-out home.

The lot, driveway, sidewalk, plumbing to the street, etc., are extra, though.

Are you referring to a cupola...

...or to something taller?

I have thought of a variation/hybrid of Gale's and Danger's concepts.

A multi-tiered house built into a hill-side or mountain-side, overlooking a lake and/or looking down a valley toward a lake or the sea/ocean. Each floor has a balcony with hanging gardens. To one side would be a stream and/or waterfall.

Top level has an observation dome housing a large Dobsonian telescope - at least 30 inches (76 cm) diameter reflector or a Keck-type system.

Lots of windows or skylights to let in natural light.

Certainly flower and vegetable gardens.

A nicely stocked wine cellar (bodega).

Actually, I have a few places in mind.

Remote log cabins in the woods by the lake? Don't you guys watch horror movies? :-p

Does anyone like Georgian, Federal(ist), Neoclassical, or Antebellum homes? http://www.mountvernon.org/virtual/index.cfm/ss/29//cfid/2210564/cftoken/59021841 ), they'd be just about perfect. The columns would stay, of course.

No need, we sirens can use our feminine wiles. Well, I guess Smurf can use his feminine wiles too.
