In summary: For a boy, I like Victor. My first name is ... :grumpy: They called me ... for short. I have always hated my first name. :frown: In summary, Rumplestiltskin does not like his first name because it is always a disaster at school and university. He likes names which are beautiful and short, but his name always a disaster for him. He has a friend who is expecting a baby and she has asked him to help her choose a name. Her child will be a boy, but he does not know what to say. He likes a name which is different and interesting, but he has never been able to think of

Sounds like the name of a drag artist to me..

Well I think arildno is a beautiful name provided that we wouldn't have to write it with capital letter and we could call him Lorinda!

My first name is David but everybody calls me by my family name Fabian. It's a common thing around here because a lot of people have the same first name.

Personally I like classical Slavic names such as Vladimir. But this names haven't been used in the last decade because they are a bit long and therefor unpopular.

I like Persephone and Lalena (pronounced with a 'nya') for a girl.

I don't know about Lalena, but Persephone is goddess of the Underworld in Greek Mythology.

Persephone is a figure in Greek mythology. Lalena is just a pretty name from a Donovan song.

It's kind of ironic that they're both pretty names but their actual referents are pretty dark. In the myth, Persephone (meaning "she who destroys the light") is abducted by Hades and becomes queen of the underworld, and subsequently her annual returns to the underworld forebode the beginning of winter. The Donovan song has lyrics like this: "When the sun goes to bed / That's the time you raise your head / That's your lot in life Lalena / Can't blame you Lalena" and "Run your hand through your hair / Paint your face with despair / That's your lot in life Lalena / Can't blame you Lalena." I swear I didn't mean to pick out such dark names, I just like the sound of both of them and by some odd coincidence they both are associated with darkness and desolation. hum.

I've always rather liked my first name
<----------- LOOK THERE

It usually gets abreviated to Dimi, altough my family had the weird habit of making it Didi when I was little. Usually people assumed I was called Didier (chock, horror).

My mum seemed to have a thing for Russian names. I found a name book a while ago, and it seems that a girl would have certainly be named Anouchka. Judging from the notes in the book, I only narrowly escaped Ivan, Vladimir or Vassili

I've always like short names with a's in them for girls. Nice example is a Latvian friend I have, who is callen Aina (altough I would prefer the spelling Aena).

We seem to have a thing for names starting with a D in the family, at least the men. So I was thinking what would be a nice name for a son, if I ever had one. Then it hit me : Dante! I looked it up and it's actually not an so uncommon name in Belgium

Wow, I really like Dante.

I think Persephone has a sad and sweet story. For anyone who likes Greek Mythology, one of the best sites I've found: http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/index.html .

10 points to anyone who can guess how I made up Atheria. (It's a combination of two words.)

Hmm, Athena+Aether?

Athena is correct. And Aether is soooooo close. Think adjective (and lose the 'a' - it's English).

Hint --> o:)

Ethereal? That was actually my original guess, didn't get Athena though.

Yeppers. It's pronounced differently, though, as Athena - ena + area = Atheria. Athena is my all-time favorite. (And the ri even looks like an n.)

The husband of a girl I used to work with was named Ajax, his brother was Hercules. Their mother was a fan of mythology.

Dimitri, you lucked out on your name. I also like it.

You just made me realize something...PF could use an English/grammer forum. There seems to be a lot of people here who use English as a second language and I think it could be a real benefit to them. And to be honest, to me too..:blushing:

I think I am going to go put this in the forum suggestion box...

Anathema Device was the name of a female character in the book Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

A-nath-e-ma:
1. A formal ecclesiastical ban, curse, or excommunication.
2. A vehement denunciation; a curse: “the sound of a witch's anathemas in some unknown tongue” (Nathaniel Hawthorne).
3. One that is cursed or damned.
4. One that is greatly reviled, loathed, or shunned: “Essentialisma belief in natural, immutable sex differencesis anathema to postmodernists, for whom sexuality itself, along with gender, is a ‘social construct’” (Wendy Kaminer).

It isn't exactly a nice name to give someone.
