Cell is a multi-core microprocessor microarchitecture that combines a general-purpose PowerPC core of modest performance with streamlined coprocessing elements which greatly accelerate multimedia and vector processing applications, as well as many other forms of dedicated computation. It was developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM, an alliance known as "STI". The architectural design and first implementation were carried out at the STI Design Center in Austin, Texas over a four-year period beginning March 2001 on a budget reported by Sony as approaching US$400 million. Cell is shorthand for Cell Broadband Engine Architecture, commonly abbreviated CBEA in full or Cell BE in part.
The first major commercial application of Cell was in Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, released in 2006. In May 2008, the Cell-based IBM Roadrunner supercomputer became the first TOP500 LINPACK sustained 1.0 petaflops system. Mercury Computer Systems also developed designs based on the Cell.
The Cell architecture includes a memory coherence architecture that emphasizes power efficiency, prioritizes bandwidth over low latency, and favors peak computational throughput over simplicity of program code. For these reasons, Cell is widely regarded as a challenging environment for software development. IBM provides a Linux-based development platform to help developers program for Cell chips.
I have been asked to describe the pathway the following types of proteins follow and where they are synthesized in the cell.
(a) Soluble proteins meant to remain in cytoplasm-
Here wouldn't this follow the pathway cytoplasm-ER-golgi-exocytosis\
(b) membrane proteins meant to remain...
hi, my textbook shows how cholesterol sort of patches the cell membrane together, keeps it at optimal fluidity... I was just wondering how cholesterol is able to do this... I am in grade 11 biology I am not being tested on this or whatever I was just wondering if anyone knew...
I have been reading about the new cell processing that would be used for the PS3. I was wondering when it would be available for regular computers and what price range you think it would be in. I was hoping to build a very nice computer before I go off to college next year, but I am kind of...
Can anyone correct me if I am wrong? This is basic basic basic basic basic basic biology, and i am just trying to refresh my memory and make sure that i am stating the correct facts
1) General concepts about tonicity

Lets say for example, we have a red blood cell exposed to solutions...
there are 2 probs here.
1) The inner and outer surfaces of a cell membrane carry a negative and positive charge, respectively. Because of these charges, a potential difference of about 0.0680 V exists across the membrane. The thickness of the membrane is 7.95×10-9 m. What is the magnitude of...
Hello, everyone. I have a project for science fair that I would like to do, but I need verification to see if this will work like I think it will.
My experiment's name is "The Effects of Electricity and Configuration on an Electrochemical Cell". It's wordy, but what can I do? Anyhow, my...
This is what I have chosen
I2 (s) + 2e- = 2I- (aq) reduction potential is +0.53
Zn2+ (aq) + 2e- = Zn (s) reduction potential is -0.76
using nerntz I get
E = 1.29 - (0.0257/2)(ln (2.24/0.1)
E= 1.2500
What would could I use to get the I and Zn ions? Also, would the...

Hi, I have a question on cell differentiation:
I know that cell differentiation occurs when the cell becomes a specialised cell of a tissue and different genes are switched on and off depends on the types of specialised cell.
The causes I am aware of are:
When repairment of tissue is...
Hi. What prevents proteins from falling out of cell membranes?
This question has been bothering me for sometime... and I cannot find an answer to this. Please help :-p
How to build a cell Phone signal booster out of a copper sheet?
Does anyone knows how to build a cell phone signal booster out of a copper sheet? I want to know the theory and calsulation behind it. Thx for anyone that can provide any information regarding these.
hi guys!
what types of cells is a mammalian cell? i know this is maybe a "horrible" question, but i find it hard knowing the different cells under this category cell. i have looked in the net, but don't find any site where they explain about this type of cell.
so hope for some ideas...
Greetings. If you like John Conway's Game of Life you might find this interesting. It is a pattern I have made based on David Bell's Unit Cell.
The Unit Cell is a pattern that replicates the action of a single Life cell. So if you tile an infinite plane with Unit Cells you could actually...
Can anyone tell me how the Voltaic cell works?
In my textbook(grade 10 India), a diagram with a beaker containing Dilute Surlphuric acid , 1 zinc plate(with negative signs all over it), 1 copper plate(positive signs all over it) and the 2 plates are connectedto a bulb.
I want to know why the...
How would I go about finding the APF for a simple hexagonal unit cell. Which is a rectangle. I know one length is a0(HCP) but I cannot figure out the other side of the rectangle. Also, wouldn't the height be the c?
Hey guys!
I'm taking a pretty basic cell biology class this semester, our book is "The World of the Cell", 5th edition, by Becker, Kleinsmith, and Hardin.
My prof assigned a little homework assignment, it's pretty easy, but I think I'm reading to deep into it. The problem is called...
Hello all,
I have this weird idea for a cell phone booster antenna and I thought i would run it past you all here to see if it could work.
Where I live, we get really bad reception inside our house so I commonly have to step outside and use my cell phone in the driveway to get a decent...
Osmosis:
a. presence of h20 molecules
b. presence of a semi-permeable membrane
c. direction: from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration
* osmosis is a passive transport, which is defined as the movement of molecules without the expenditure of cellular...
I noticed recently that just before my cell phone rings I can hear a 100 Hz or so buzzing from the speaker of a certain radio alarm clock of mine. I have also seen this sort of thing take down factory systems when standing near unprotected control centers. I know one factory engineer that this...
Twice now I have been told that my cell phone has called someone without my knowledge. At first I assumed that I had bumped a button but I show no records of the outgoing calls in memory. I'm still waiting to see if the usage shows up on the bill. I have noticed from time to time that the...
Is it known what the salt conditions are like in the nucleus? For instance, in the cytoplasm [KCl]=100mM [NaCl]=10mM.. would this be very different in the nucleus?
Which salts would be important in influencing protein/protein or protein/DNA interactions?
Transport across cell membranes...
I was reading my textbook and it said, "Fat-soluble molecules, such as glycerol, can diffuse through the membrane easily. They dissolve in the phospholipid bilayer and pass through it in the direction of the concentration gradient, from a high concentration to...
I was wondering if you could recommend an article that would explain a concept to me. That is: the drawback of fuel cells, reportedly, is that hydrogen is not readily available. However, I am wondering why it is that if the original idea of fuel cells came from reversing the concept that...

Hey guys anyone have an idea for a hydrogen fuel cell. I was thinking about one in which a battery first is used to split water into h2 and o2 using electrolysis. And then the components can be combined to produce energy. Anyone have any other ideas or links? Thanks.
How exactly are the epithilial cells in the small intestines adapted for their specific function?
How are palisade mesophyll cells adapted?
Thanks for any and all help.
Is there any organism that has only one cell ? If any, what is that ? and how can it lead its life ? Does it need to develop whereas it is undividable ?
Thanks
Regards,
From what I understand about fuel cells, they generate power by influencing electrons to move themselves around an ion-conducting material to get to the other side. While the electrons make there way from one side to the other, they supply DC in the middle of there journey. But I am not quite...
I bought a new cell.
I never let the power go below 80%.
Now the cell(power) has become weak.
It can't even withstand for 5mins with full power.
What was the mistake i made ?
Did i overcharge my cell ?
I don't understand the chemistry behind that!
Can anybody explain ?
i was once heard that life begin with one cell,
and that cell is made up by chemicals water and other substence from
aerolites.
this is proved by someone i don't remmber.
and then that cell was evolved (some how), and become so many species we have now, so that cell was the...
Now for another question on the same subject You all know how in the human body the oxygen binds to the iron compound inside the hemoglobin. and that carbon monoxide has a 200 to 1 affinity to oxygen within the hemoglobin. But anyway my question is if The Iron inside a cell pulls and holds on...
I'm doing a persuasive speech on stem cell research for my English class. I am defending stem cell research; I'm for it.
But some people aren't, and of course, I have had to address that in my speech. But the main argument (against stem cell research) is that it is immoral.
It is not moral...
Hi all,
Before I ask a Q about blood cancers, can I just check - is it right that cell division of blood cells takes place only in the bone marrow (and not in the bloodstream or anywhere else)?
Thanx

A cell wall is a rigid structure, so I wonder how organisms with such a structure are able to take up nutrients from their environment?
If there is only a plasma membrane, vesicles can be formed which pinch off and thus take up nutrients from the environment and merge with other vesicles to...
Is it at all possible through genetic engineering, or through physically transplanting one, to add more mitochondria, vaculous, ribosomes etc. to existing cells, assuming they were simmilar enough to the current ones to not be viewed as invaders?
Just seen an interesting documentary about the breakthrough in Cancer treatments. The programme gives a brief discription on cell division and how doctors think the way forward for treatment is changing due to the Understanding of Genetic (genome) discovery. Anyway I was fascinated by the film...
I was thinking about making a cell phone on my own, but I don't know where I can find sufficient information and the requied knowledge to start. Can anyone please give me any useful advices and information? All helps are appreciated.
I am wondering about the differences between plant vs animal cell division, mainly about cytokinesis.
Is the following a true generalization?
Plant daughter cells separate by forming membrane vesicles that line up in the center of the cell and fuse to form new plasma membranes.
Animal...

It always amazed my how a mice is similar to a human, but all the systems are in miniature. Why doesn't a mouse grow as big as a human? What is the mechanism regulating the organ sized, a certain number of cells? A certain size? It actually turns out that somehow the physical size is known, not...
The title sounds strange, but that is what the life of a cell will eventually experience.
