A chemical substance is a form of matter having constant chemical composition and characteristic properties. Some references add that chemical substance cannot be separated into its constituent elements by physical separation methods, i.e., without breaking chemical bonds. Chemical substances can be simple substances, chemical compounds, or alloys. Chemical elements may or may not be included in the definition, depending on expert viewpoint.Chemical substances are often called 'pure' to set them apart from mixtures. A common example of a chemical substance is pure water; it has the same properties and the same ratio of hydrogen to oxygen whether it is isolated from a river or made in a laboratory. Other chemical substances commonly encountered in pure form are diamond (carbon), gold, table salt (sodium chloride) and refined sugar (sucrose). However, in practice, no substance is entirely pure, and chemical purity is specified according to the intended use of the chemical.
Chemical substances exist as solids, liquids, gases, or plasma, and may change between these phases of matter with changes in temperature or pressure and time. Chemical substances may be combined or converted to others by means of chemical reactions.
Forms of energy, such as light and heat, are not matter, and are thus not "substances" in this regard.
So when osmosis between two solutions (separated by a semipermeable membrane),takes place, the solvent travels from the side where its chemical potential is higher to the side where its chemical potential is lower.
However, this results in a difference of levels of fluids across the membrane...

So let`s say that we have a chemical reaction with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, but
we`ve got very little hydrogen, and very much oxygen. As we pour these two liquids together they react with on another and create water. However since there was a very much bigger amount of oxygen than...
The followings are the chemical reactions I learned at my university:
K2S2O8(s) + H2SO4(concentrated) → H2S2O8 + K2SO4
H2S2O8 + 2H2O → H2O2 + 2H2SO4
H2O2 (heat)→ H2O + [O]
[O] + O2 → O3
However, I'm wondering why I can't find these reactions anywhere on the Internet.
What do you think...

I think one of the most important aspects of learning is knowing how to organize information in your head. And after all this time I realized I don't know the rules behind chemical nomenclature as well as I should; for instance, I can name chemical compounds just 'cause, having no idea why that...

"The reaction of ethane gas (C2H6) with chlorine gas produces C2H5Cl as its main product (along with HCl). In addition, the reaction invariably produces a variety of other minor products, including C2H4Cl2, C2H3Cl3, and others. Naturally, the pro- duction of these minor...
We know that a shell can accommodate a maximum of 2n2 electrons because a shell can have a maximum of n2 orbitals depending upon the value of n, i.e n=1 for K shell, n=2 for L shell, n=3 for M shell, n=4 for N shell and so on. According to Lewis, he pictured the atom in terms of a positively...
At this scientific site it should be possible to get some better informed considerations than I am finding elsewhere about the probabilities concerning what has happened in Syria.

I've posted questions on other forums asking people why they became engineers, and the majority of people claimed they did it because of a passion for building things, interested in how things work, etc.

Question,
If I make a rocket engine using KNO3 fuel and bentonite clay for the nozzle, shouldn't the ISP of the engine be slightly higher due to the radiation?
It would be nearly Immeasurable but nevertheless there.
Kind of like the way a NERVA engine works.
Can we talk about the chemical potential of a system with fixed number of particles? Is this physically meaningful? Why/why not?
P.s: I know that chemical potential is the partial derivative of free energy with respect to number of particles. But in the formulation of grand canonical...
I was trying to solve the following exercise:

In reactions that reduce organic compounds through donation of electrons, can a battery substitute as an electron donor?

I have a quick question, is the chemical potential $$\mu=\partial F /\partial N$$ where F is the free energy physically equivalent to a potential or energy?
For example, in electrostatics, $$V=U/q$$
Does $$\mu_{ext}= U \text{ or } V$$
Also, same thing could be asked about gravity...
