Would it be more beneficial to take graduate courses in your B.S. major in place of electives than taking physics classes? I would like to take as many physics classes as possible but if it will help me get into graduate school or be a better engineer i would want to take graduate courses
HI guys,
I was just wondering, so hypothetically speaking, suppose one manages to maintain a GPA of 3.8-4.0 in all math courses throughout the undergrad studies( I am a math major by the way), but for some reason gets a mixture of A's and B's ( where B's dominate) in all other non-math...
algebra and basic calculus skills in computation? We haven't really used any heavy differentiation or integration, save basic differentiation or whatever. Of course, I guess most things that would require that are done by software. I'm just wondering if it's the norm at universities to introduce...
Hello, I am starting university this winter and I have a question for those of you who know a little bit about bioinformatics.
My school allows me to take 3 minors (Math,Computer science,Software engineering) and turn them into an applied science Bachelor's degree. This allows me to skip a lot...
So I just started my first semester in second year and most of my courses seem really interesting and I love what I am studying. My major is a specialist in Biotechnology at UofT(mississauga), and I am currently taking 5 courses:
Intro Cell and Molec Bio
Intro Physiology (with lab)
Fundamentals...
On this page are loads of e-books from open university courses. They range from the really basic to some final year materials.
http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/course/index.php
All of the science courses begin with the letter s in the code and maths m, but some of the other stuff is interesting too.
Hi
I am in my third year undergrad, and am planning to study physics in graduate school.
I was wondering if anyone knows what sort of math graduate schools expect and or want incoming students to have? Mostly, I mean besides Calculus, vector calculus, linear algebra, and Differential...
Ok, I originally wanted to do only take 4 courses so I could work at least 20 hours a week. Now I feel the urge to graduate so I found a 5th course.
I go to University of Houston
Abstract Algebra
Advanced Linear Algebra 1
Differential Equations
Intermediate Analysis
Managerial...
I'll be entering my last year for my BS degree in physics this fall. I have Solid State lecture and Solid State Lab lined up for my physics courses. My friends are taking graduate level Quantum Mechanics.
My reasoning is "I already know what QM is, but not SS, and I have to take QM anyway...
Hi,
So I was going over my course selections for my next three years and I after putting aside the courses that are required by my program I noticed that I might have enough time/space for some of the other courses I would like to take during my time here at university.
These are...
Other than four semesters of calc., are there any other math courses to take as an undergrad to be well prepared for a PhD program in Chemical Physics? If so, what? Thanks.
Hi,
I was wondering if studying these CHEM courses all in the same year would be too much for a person that is studying Biotechnology, and thus I am taking 4 other Biology courses with another needed humanities credit.
The CHEM courses are:
Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry...
I'm in community college at the moment. I'm sure a few of you have witnessed me make a fool of my self goofing-off on the forums not so long ago. But, I'm curious as to what comes... next?
As far as math is concerned, that is.
After looking through the booklet with the course selections and...
Hi.
This is my first post here. Honestly, I love math. I graduated high school with Calculus 1 under my belt. Not a big feat to you guys, but I was proud. Then I messed up big time. Fast forward 3 years later and I'm a freshman at a CC starting off with college algrbra and precalculus...
I will be a senior next year, graduating with a BS in Math. I want to go to graduate school. Unfortunately, my past few semesters were not the best. I wasn't the most motivated student.
Grades in math courses, in order, were:
Calc Sequence: A's
Diff Eq: A
Proofs (required): A
Linear...
I'm choosing 3 maths modules for next year (my third in Maths and Physics, in a UK university) with a view to studying theoretical physics thereafter (starting off with general relativity, quantum field theory and most likely strings, and working outwards from there depending on where I am-...
Does it matter which upper level course I take next year, when I'm a senior? I'm an EE major. The courses that I have narrowed it down to incude:
Digital Communications Theory
Analog Circuit Design and Implementation
Electro-Optic Theory
Digital Systems Design II
CMOS VLSI
Digital...
I am a senior graduating this semester with a B.S. physics degree. Unfortunately, I have not been able to take some of the upper levels (optics, solid state physics) I had wanted to due to scheduling conflicts. Does anyone know if it is possible to take these one or two courses at any other...
Hello, everyone!
I am beginning college next fall, and I am unsure of where I will/should head in mathematics. My school offers several theory-based courses that are more rigorous and extremely focused on proofs, though this comes at the expense of some application. They tend to be geared...
The BS degree for physics at the university (Kentucky) I will be attending has 'Calculus I-IV', as the only mathematical requirements. In addition to the calculus courses, I will be taking 'Matrix Algebra & Applications'.
My question is, what are other mathematics courses that are helpful...
How do low grades (say, Cs or lower) in general education courses affect graduate school admissions?
In my case, I'm a pure mathematics major who is failing honors microeconomics. I just absolutely loathe the subject. How is this going to affect my future? Will they care, or just look at my...
Hello physics forum! First let me say this site is excellent for insight into this wonderful subject! I've learned a tremendous amount just by surfing the forums in the short period of time that I've been here.
Now for my reason in posting...
I am currently a senior in high school preparing...
I'm trying to schedule my courses for next semester and just wanted opinion on one thing.
Phys 213 : Fluids & Thermal Physics
Phys 214 : Waves & Quantum Physics
Theses are 2 credits each and offered for half semesters each. The prereq for both is mechanics and E and M. WOuld taking them...
Hi, I'll be a senior EE this upcoming fall and was curious to see what kind of experiences you've had with the following courses:
Analog Circuit Design
Digital Communications Systems
Cryptography & Information Security
Probabilistic Systems Analysis
Electro-Optics and Lasers
Topics in...
Hi,
I was wondering if, when applying for graduate school, much emphasis is placed on grades from lower division courses (from what I heard the emphasis is on the last two years of undergrad). The reason is that I didn't do so well in two such courses (neither are physics courses and one is...
So how do these work? Do you go up to a professor and request his assistance for independent study, after which point this whole deal is made official and you're credited for it? Thanks in advance.
I was wondering if there were any good books or courses out there that I could use to learn physics. I'm completed a basic high school level course in physics, but that's all. Are there any good teach-yourself books out there? I'm mainly interested in quantum / particle physics, but I know...
One semester left for my Math BA -- Which courses to take?
I'm going to graduate this Fall with my BA in Math from Penn State, and I have a really open-ended schedule. I'm planning on getting a MA in Secondary Math Education after I graduate, so that makes things pretty interesting when it...
I'm taking advanced function intro calc class right now, and I'm going to get atleast a 97%.
I have no other 4U classes...can I still register for university this fall?
or do I need to complete all six first?
I wonder if anyone here has experiences with the mathematical tripos/natural sciences tripos at Cambridge. I'm currently holding an offer for Maths there (conditional on STEP) and opting to do maths with physics, and if I get in I MAY transfer to do physics in the natural sciences tripos in the...
Is doing Calculus III and Differential Equations in the summer advisable? 6-week term, with 1 hour 15 minutes lectures everyday. What does everyone here think?
Does a physics reading course make a good impression on an undergraduate transcript? If given the choice between taking a reading course in an interesting subject and taking the same course as a regular class the following year, what would you do?
My goal right now,is to do a master in nanotechnology and specifically in keio university(japan) when I'm finished from undergrad.I'm studying in greece and in my university we have 40 subjects in total from which 12 are of choise. This means I have to chose 12 subjects out of about 70.Some of...
Hi!
I have some general questions for those veterans who took intro-level science courses as freshmen. I was wondering how many hours it took for you to master a single subject. Also, I'm curious if memorization will get me by?
So what are they?
Mine are as follows:
Differential Equations= Honors
Linear Algebra- Honors
Analog Circuits
Modern Physics- Honors
Engineering Thermodynamics
Physical Education
Will the math I use in my physics major be easier or harder than the math I use in my math courses? I just got an A in Cal 2 with a 92. Overall, I did mildly well, but obviously not perfect. I fully qualitatively understand what power series are and everything, but I guess there might be a fuzzy...
Hi, I just finished up a B.A. in Physics at UVa, but I had some major holes in my curriculum. I took Modern physics, QM, and then GR, but never took E&M and Stat. Mech. Aside from MIT OCW, are there universities that offer advanced physics online courses for grade so I can patch these classes up...
I'm interested in taking some CS courses to show basically I know half what I'm talking about to employers when it comes down to coursework. I'm a physics major who's taken first year CS (In my case "Designing Functional Programs", "Elementary Algorithm Design and Data Abstraction").
Ie. I...
Handling 6 courses...
I am just looking for tips on how I should best manage my time. I am currently juggling 6 courses : Calculus I, Linear Algebra, Engineering mechanics : Statics, properties of fluids and solids, History of Europe, and Engineering Design...
I just don't seem to have...
Do you take all courses prescribed for the particular semester (full load) like in my case 6 courses for this semester or you take less; like 4 or 5 or maybe 3?
I'm a continuing ed student (in the US), so I don't have to follow the same track as the undergrads; if I wanted, I could jump into a higher-level mechanics or E&M or physics 3 course. My question is, do I need to take the lower-level courses before I get there, or are they a waste of time in...
I am getting a BS in Physics in december, but due to financial constraints I can't be in school much longer. Need advice on what to do.
I transferred to this university and left some electrical courses behind because of the transfer cap unfortunately. I wonder at the close of my academic...
Hi, do you have a class you took as an undergrad that you really enjoyed?
I'm interested in hearing what people feel were the best classes they've had.
I ask, because my university has a list of required classes I need to fulfill the physics major requirement; but I feel like it's a wasted...
Hi all -- I'm currently going to be a junior this fall majoring in Electrical Engineering. I will graduate in 2009. I have a question regarding my future career path, maybe some of you know some answers:
1) Should I take some business courses during my undergraduate years? How essential is...
Every time I look at the list of engineering courses offered by universities, I notice that " Special Topics of Engineering " or " Individual studies " or " Special Projects for ENgineering" are offered by every engineering department. What are they? I know that these are not mandatory courses...
When applying for the REU program, how many physics courses should I have completed, how high should my GPA be , and how much research experience should I have beforehand. Would assisting graduate students and/or a professor on a physics topic , such as rotating black holes or topics in nuclear...
I just graduated from a University. I was in Mechanical Engineering major. My overall GPA is 3.5. However, I have some problems with my Lower-level division courses. While I was in Freshman and Sophomore years, I had some Ds, Fs and W in some Math and G.E subjects.
I did very very well in...
